Minnesotans are facing concurrent crises of climate change, high energy prices and inflation, and the inequitable public health impacts of fossil fuel air pollution. Renewableenergy will help with all of that—but we need a grid that is designed for wind and solar instead of having to rely on expensive coal and gas plants.
On May 7, PennEnvironment released a new report saying Pennsylvania ranks 49th in the nation for percentage growth in total solar, wind and geothermal generation over the past decade. billion to power their homes and businessesin one year alone. The Keystone State has vast renewableenergy potential.
Lithium-ion batteries are essential for decarbonizing transportation through electric vehicles and building a resilient, renewableenergy grid through energy storage batteries. Nearly every part of a renewableenergy grid can be circular, with all outputs circulating back as inputs in a regenerative cycle.
The elected board members who run these utilities did little or nothing about renewables until the past decade. During the 2010s, windpower went from 1% of generation to 20%. In 2019, the Utah State Legislature passed the Community RenewableEnergy Act (HB 411). That has changed quite quickly.
But rather than ramping up the use of polluting fossil gas, this is the perfect moment for the province to transition to clean and safe renewableenergy. Electricity nerds might be writing off the prospect of new gas plant contracts because of the forthcoming Federal Clean Electricity Regulations (CER). But there are loopholes.
It’s widely viewed as the “gold standard” for energy projections, even though there’s much debate in the energy community about the validity of the assumptions behind these projections. Source: US Energy Information Administration, Annual Energy Outlook 2022 (AEO2022). This year’s projections are a bit grim.
Three decades of deregulation allowed private companies, as opposed to public regulators, to make critical decisions about reliability. In many places state and federal utility regulators delegated decisions about energy supplies to the market. Market forces are moving private investment to renewables. Can we fix this?
I sometimes ask students to guess what state produces the most windpower. And not just that, but Texas is by far the biggest producer of oil, with a governor who has pledged to protect the industry from climate regulation at all cost. Which seems a little hard to square with the state’s reliance on renewableenergy.
Investing in renewable and battery storage: Under DTE’s proposed plan, the company would add 15,400 megawatts (MW) of new solar and windpower by 2042, which it says is enough to power approximately 4 million homes. DTE currently has 3,000 MW of existing and approved solar and wind resources.)
This regulation requires 100% of new medium- and heavy-duty trucks (anything from delivery vans to big rigs) sold in California to be zero emissions by 2036 and 100% of large fleets to be zero emissions by 2045. But it also would require California to give up some of its energy autonomy.
Strong industrial policy and fiscal support for renewableenergy, paired with ever more ambitious targets for clean energy deployment, have brought the country to this point. China is also a world leader on offshore windenergy production, an area Newsom has sought to emphasize in California.
Batteries are key to enabling the renewableenergy transition. When the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, batteries help store clean energy to continue supplying electricity to the grid and to customers consistently and reliably. A fossil fuel energy grid extracts and expends finite resources.
Over the last five years, several states, including New York (2020), California (2022), Illinois (2023), and Michigan (2023) have adopted comprehensive permitting reforms that curtail the power of local governments to block development of large-scale renewableenergy projects.
Colombia’s Caribbean coast has great potential for offshore windpower projects but is also home to protected areas of ecological importance. By Daniela Quintero Díaz Government seeks to accelerate offshore projects with an upcoming auction, as experts say regulations and safeguards still need fine-tuning.
Over the last 10 years, dozens of townships in Michigan have effectively halted renewableenergy development by adopting severe zoning restrictions, such as moratoriums. In the event that the PSC assumes control over an application, it will be allowed to preempt any local restrictions that would otherwise apply.
Some of the actions are related to development of renewableenergy in Louisiana, whereas others aim to manage emissions. Other strategies focus on switching to low carbon fuels and developing the infrastructure to support renewableenergy in Louisiana. Noteworthy actions include: ACTION 5.6
The changes are designed to support a renewableenergy grid, make buildings more energy efficient, support the use of electric vehicles, and reduce waste and stormwater runoff. Create the newly defined use “energy infrastructure equipment” (EIE), and add it to Use Groups 4, 6, and 14 (ZR 12-10, 22-14, 32-15, 32-23).
Advocates of renewableenergy have argued since the 1970s that the variable, weather-dependent nature of sunlight and wind is a modest obstacle at best to relying on 100 percent renewables. Some have argued that weather-dependent energies would, paradoxically, make electricity even more reliable.
from the Plan focuses on prioritizing offshore wind strategic planning for outreach, workforce, and impact assessments in order to reach an offshore windpower generation goal of 5 gigawatts by 2035. many other strategies and actions are connected to offshore windenergy development as well.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (left) visits a hybrid power plant where “green” hydrogen is made using windpower and fed into the gas grid. Germany is not doing all it can to cut back energy use and increase economic pressure on Russia, argues Arne Jungjohann. Germany will be fully renewable by 2035.
Fossil gas prices have skyrocketed in the last year and if the gas plants are forced to shut down due to the coming Federal Clean Electricity Regulations, ratepayers will be on the hook for the bill until the end of the contracts – even if they stop producing electricity because they are too polluting.
Australia’s new pro-climate action government has meant an acceleration in clean energy interest and capacity. To meet that target, 96 gigawatts (GW) of new renewableenergy capacity is needed. Offshore wind developers, Orsted , Shell and Equinor have already shown a strong interest in helping.
Increased electrification in both the industrialized and the developing world is projected to help meet emissions reduction goals, and nuclear power could provide much of the future needs for electricity. GAO would be required to conduct a new report on the NRC’s actions to implement the section. Title II of H.R.
On June 30, 2022, the State of California joined the State of New York in adopting legislation that allows state authorities to bypass local laws in permitting large-scale renewableenergy projects. Credit: New York Office of RenewableEnergy Siting. b)(1) (emphasis added); and. emphasis added). Law § 94-c(2)(h).
Enacted in 2019, the CLCPA transformed the state’s earlier clean energy standard efforts from administrative fiat to law and sets more aggressive goals to reduce statewide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions economy-wide to 60% from a 1990 baseline by 2030, and 15% from a 1990 baseline by 2050.
Last week the Sabin Center and the American Bar Association held an event on addressing landowner concerns in renewableenergy siting. Wind and solar farms often spark siting battles between local residents who welcome renewableenergy projects and their neighbors who are concerned about visual or other impacts.
As detailed in the RGGI investment plan , these funds are typically used to support energy efficiency and renewableenergy programs in New York State. Most of the carbon allowances are auctioned and the proceeds of those auctions are typically used to promote energy conservation and renewableenergy programs.
2] New Mexico’s 2021 Legislative Session will consider a bill that would significantly change how the state regulates oil and gas operations. However, Governor Charlie Baker vetoed the bill, citing concerns related to the interim emission target and the requirement that utilities procure more offshore windpower, among others. [7]
However, Bitcoin’s lack of intrinsic value, the ease with which it can be lost, its lack of regulation, and its price volatility are not the only aspects of digital gold that have been criticised. Estimates have suggested that the total energy consumed to send and receive money is more than 19 European countries and approximately 0.7%
On November 16, 2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) published a proposed rule to expedite the environmental review process for certain renewableenergy infrastructure projects through the use of categorical exclusions.
In light of this attrition, New York Governor Hochul announced in October a 10-Point Action Plan to affirm the State’s commitment to and provide clear benchmarks for renewableenergy development , including an expedited competitive solicitation process announced by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in November.

However, Governor Charlie Baker vetoed the bill, citing concerns related to the interim emission target and the requirement that utilities procure more offshore windpower, among others. [7]
Some years ago, I began to feel the most important thing I could do was learn how to replace fossil fuel with renewableenergy. For 30 years I have been an advocate for offshore wind development off New England’s coast and for the creation of institutions to support a transition from fossil fuels to renewableenergy.
The modern electric grid is an economy, albeit a heavily-regulated one. [20]. Usually, the model works like this: consumers want cheap electricity, and the cheapest electricity provider wins the bid to provide that power. [21]. Like most economies, it is driven by supply and demand.
Data from the agency shows that requests have accelerated since 2022 when a decree was issued regulating the transfer of marine areas from the government to the sector. Brazil has great potential to produce cheap green hydrogen, and offshore windenergy will contribute significantly to this,” said Gannoum. “We
The plan must specifically address how EPA will consider the effects of Clean Air Act regulation on the coal industry. Murray Energy Corp. The groups said FERC’s review was at odds with EPA and Council on Environmental Quality guidance, caselaw, and the NEPA regulations. McCarthy , No. 5:14 -cv-39 (N.D. Sierra Club v.
The first approach is more ambitious and would push the boundaries of past market regulation, though in ways that are consistent with both the law and FERC practice. In light of the urgent need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, perhaps a little ambition is exactly what’s needed.
One of the most important success stories for climate policy has been its ability to dramatically reduce the cost of various renewableenergy technologies such as windpower and solar photovoltaics – and the same cost reduction appears to be occurring for battery storage as well.
Truly resilient communities would have the infrastructure (including renewableenergy infrastructure) and support in place to move from surviving to thriving. Using collective power, she sees people demanding their cities adopt disaster mitigation plans to ensure they’re not left vulnerable to the next disaster as they try to rebuild.
4] Meanwhile, many experts see in recent trends an inevitable transition away from coal and nuclear power plants, designed to function as baseload capacity, toward variable renewableenergy sources with just-in-time natural gas back-up. 7] Nuclear plants are among the most reliable components of America’s power grids.
Hydrogen’s supply-side has been buttressed by incentives from state and federal governments, refineries and utilities looking to extend the life of fossil fuel infrastructure, and renewableenergy companies seeking to take advantage of the huge amounts of clean energy needed to produce green hydrogen.
