This demonstration of the connections between people and systems, and the need for collective solutions to complicated problems, came to mind when I read about an idea for a different real estate host technology: nuclearpower plant owners seeking to bring large data centers to co-locate on their land.
Introduction One of the main messages coming out of the recent COP28 meetings in the UAE concerns the role that nuclearpower can play in the future of clean energy development around the world. The hope is that this encourages international financial institutions to include nuclearenergy in loans for energy projects.
People across the country are trying to square the benefits that technology can bring with the real and growing impacts on the environment and consumers, said Ellie Kerns , Climate and Clean Energy Advocate with the PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center. Rising electricity demand from U.S. Click Here to read the report.

In the rush to integrate artificial intelligence into the economy, fast-moving information technology companies are running into a problem: slow-moving electric utilities. In more ways than one, the electricity supply so vital to running a data center simply doesnt respond the way Silicon Valley and big investors want.
This means redoubling efforts to cut emissions, and reliably constrain temperature rises, not gambling on speculative technological interventions to cool the planet. Or low-carbon energy from renewableenergy systems rather than nuclearpower, with its needs for cooling water.
Each of these lines will transport at least 1,000 megawatts (MW), which, at the scale of a conventional nuclearpower plant, is large enough to provide economies of scale in land use, construction, and energy losses.
It adds Michigan to the growing list of states, including Illinois and Minnesota , that have adopted standards to increase renewableenergy on the grid and move toward 100-percent decarbonization of the power sector. An equitable clean energy transition is not just about the technologies used to generate electricity.
Wind, solar, energy storage, and transmission provide the vast majority of new capacity additions, which demonstrates that these technologies play a significant and growing role in maintaining grid reliability in the future. Importantly, though, overall use of that gas capacity dramatically declines over time.
The grid might not meet that demand Electricity for data centers comes from the grid, and by extension, the mix of power plants that supply the grid. New data center proposals can be of the scale of nuclearpower plants and some even seek to connect directly to existing nuclear plants.
The [federal Bipartisan Infrastructure and Inflation Reduction Acts] provide billions of dollars in investment aimed at expanding low-and no-carbon technologies, accelerating a just energy transition, and building equity into climate adaptation efforts. from 2019 to 2020 and 44.4% from 2005 to 2020. from 2019 to 2020 and 44.4%
The German example Germany, the economic and industrial powerhouse in Europe in 2023, decided, for ideological and emotional reasons, to wean itself off nuclearpower , even though the low-carbon baseload energy source was key to stability and economic output. But this did not happen. billion tonnes in 2024.
Global spending on clean energytechnologies and infrastructure is on track to hit $2 trillion in 2024. Much of this funding is slated to be put toward renewables, electric vehicles, low-emission fuels, storage solutions, nuclearpower and other green technology. Read the full story at ESG Dive.
What happened to energy efficiency? Once again the UK government has talked up increasing the deployment of renewables , but they would do well to invest in the most powerful low-carbon technology we have; energy efficiency. So far they have done little in pushing this forward.

First up I look at some of the latest developments in energy research – wind, solar, nuclear and energy storage. I’m joined by Daniel Kammen from the University of California, Berkeley, in the US, whose research interests span renewableenergy, nuclearpower and public policy.
Those findings might surprise physicists, who will be aware that the energy density of nuclear fission is so high that just a fingertip of uranium has an energy equivalent of 5000 barrels of oil. In it, we emphasize that nuclear is not only a low-carbon source of energy, but is also widely available, scalable and deployable.
Taking advantage of new technologies will be essential if the world is to achieve its net-zero goals. Renewableenergy sources are perhaps the most obvious of these, and the transition to them is already under way. “I Hari Chohan , nuclear radiation analyst, UK Atomic Energy Authority. From quantum technology and nuclearpower to astronomy and medical physics , these case studies offer insights into how different physicists approached the decision-making process, and how they got from their degree to where they are now. But COVID isn’t the only recent development affecting what recruiters are looking for.
Section 60103 creates a “Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund” (GGRF), which the EPA Administrator can use to make grants for the deployment of zero-emission technologies, and to carry out other greenhouse gas emission reduction activities. The IRA allocates significant funding for both new and existing federal grant programs.
The rapid adoption of AI technology is creating an unprecedented demand for data centers, which are now responsible for a substantial portion of the world's energy consumption. Companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are investing billions in renewableenergy to power their growing AI infrastructures.
Furthermore, the IRA’s tax credits – and direct pay – are in the aggregate uncapped, so the dollars opened up by the IRA are limited only by the ambition of renewableenergy developers and investors, including cities. Project Complexity : Renewableenergy project structures vary in their complexity.
The Rise of Modular Nuclear Reactors: Key Players and Trends In the face of climate change and the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions, modular nuclear reactors (MNRs) are gaining significant attention as a viable alternative to traditional nuclearpower plants. House Bill 2275 was referred to the House Consumer Protection, Technology and Utilities Committee. This revitalized energy standard will deliver outsized economic value, improve the reliability of our electricity grid, and position Pennsylvania as a leader in the energy arena for the next twenty years.
As detailed in the RGGI investment plan , these funds are typically used to support energy efficiency and renewableenergy programs in New York State. Most of the carbon allowances are auctioned and the proceeds of those auctions are typically used to promote energy conservation and renewableenergy programs.
Tony Seiwell, Business Manager for the Laborers' District Council of Eastern PA said he believes that renewableenergy jobs should be well-paid and provide great benefits to workers in this field. It will not only help schools to reduce energy costs, but it will also help to set the standard for solar energy construction jobs.
Advocates of renewableenergy have argued since the 1970s that the variable, weather-dependent nature of sunlight and wind is a modest obstacle at best to relying on 100 percent renewables. Some have argued that weather-dependent energies would, paradoxically, make electricity even more reliable.
These amazing facts really shouldn’t amaze us because we often see efficiency gains when we transition from one technology to another. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) use about 70 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, the oldest technology. EVs will continue to get greener as the power grid gets greener.
By Anders Lorenzen Analysis from the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that the rise in renewableenergytechnologies such as solar and wind as well as nuclearenergy is to dominate the growth in global power supply over the course of the next three years. Photo credit: IEA.
