On March 7, Olympus Energy/Hyperion Midstream LLC notified DEP it found an abandoned coal mine subsidence void under the construction site for its Guardian NaturalGas Compressor Station off Wilderness Road in Trafford, Penn Township, Westmoreland County, according to DEP Oil and Gas Program inspection reports.
But smarter approaches, if carefully applied, could help to reverse costly reliance on gas, and accelerate the clean energy transition in PJM, and nationwide. The process is a win-win for systems that can afford the upfront costs of these waste-to-energy technologies.
All this waste must be handled, transported, and disposed of. If the radiation levels in the sludge decrease enough, the waste can be trucked to the same local landfills that handle household trash instead of being shipped by rail to radioactive waste disposal sites out west — a more expensive but safer option.
