Yes, EV battery recycling is happening in facilities around the United States. Did the group propose recycling requirements? California is taking steps to change that.

Electric Vehicle (EV) battery recycling is crucial to a sustainable, electrified transportation system. A substantial portion of key minerals for electrifying could come from recycled batteries by 2050, dramatically reducing the need for new mining. The recycler takes the battery pack apart into smaller modules.

Only 10% of solar photovoltaic, or PV, panels are recycled today in the US, and the rest meet their inglorious end in the garbage heap. Among those that are recycled, very few have 100% of their material recovered. The EU requires manufacturers to handle the reuse and recycling of solar panels with no cost to consumers.

When an EV retires, the battery can be recycled and the materials recovered to make new batteries. The California bill includes the following important aspects of a recycling policy: Creates a framework where manufacturers are responsible for the end-of-life management of batteries they produce.

However, innovative approaches can reduce those harms, including the creation of a circular economy through reuse and recycling.
