By Anders Lorenzen Having been at the forefront of dealing with climate impacts in recent years, Greece has shored up its renewableenergy targets. Greece, which has recently battled one climate-fuelled wildfire after the other, has ramped up its renewableenergy targets.
In order to achieve the greenhouse gas reductions needed to sustain a livable climate, we must scale up renewableenergy capacity at a rapid pace. The resource bank is part of the work of the RenewableEnergy Legal Defense Initiative (RELDI). Read more about RELDI here and visit the resource bank here.
Batteries are key to enabling the renewableenergy transition. When the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, batteries help store clean energy to continue supplying electricity to the grid and to customers consistently and reliably. A fossil fuel energy grid extracts and expends finite resources.
But rather than ramping up the use of polluting fossil gas, this is the perfect moment for the province to transition to clean and safe renewableenergy. But the agency was caught skewing information , suppressing modeling that supported renewableenergy options and showed that their use would actually reduce consumers’ costs. .
Regionalizing the grid could allow California to take advantage of renewableenergy in other states such as windpower from Wyoming and hydropower in the Pacific Northwest. But it also would require California to give up some of its energy autonomy.
Countries around the world are in a race to find solutions for these types of greenhouse gases, which are a result of human activities like driving cars and manufacturing goods.
The Premier had made it very clear in past statements that she is biased against renewableenergy, and instead favours projects that cause pollution, limit Alberta’s future economic growth, and contribute to global climate change. In 2023, Alberta led the country in renewableenergy investment.
By the end, approximately 80 per cent of the original energy is lost. That is not a smart use of Atlantic Canada’s renewableenergy. The windenergy used to produce hydrogen won’t be available for local use. A much better use of new windpower would be to replace coal with clean, affordable windpower.
Diversifying the country’s power system away from large, thermal power plants that require fuel and water to operate–like coal- and gas-fired plants–can also make the grid more resilient to spring impacts like floods and other extreme weather.
Governor Edwards’ Climate Initiatives Task Force, charged with making recommendations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions originating in Louisiana, recently took another step towards that goal. This document contains proposed strategies and specific actions across several priority areas to be considered in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A report commissioned by the Ontario Power Authority (now the Independent Electricity System Operator) identified 64 potential offshore windpower sites in the Great Lakes that could produce nearly 35,000 MW of electricity which is 50 per cent more than our current energy demand. This is completely doable. As the U.S.
Perhaps predictably, the large energy companies NextERA and Calpine oppose it, and are funding the opposition: the companies own fossil fuel and other power plants that will become less economical, and stand to lose many millions when the less expensive hydropower enters the grid. The post Mainers Opposing Clean RenewableEnergy?
Hydropower generation across California and the American West has declined in this extremely dry year, meaning that electricity providers will lean more heavily on natural gas, solar, and windpower. President Biden’s goal is to cut the country’s greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, and to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions now, as Dr. Sarah Cooley , Ocean Conservancy’s director of climate science, emphasized when addressing a COP27 session. Offshore Wind. International shipping emissions, responsible for roughly 3% of the world’s greenhouse gases, can be eliminated by moving toward zero-carbon shipping.
Renewableenergy projects have encountered significant opposition in at least 45 states. In addition, between April 2022 and March 2023, at least 11 counties in Ohio adopted binding resolutions to prohibit large renewableenergy projects in all of their unincorporated territories or very large swathes of those territories.
An offshore wind farm in Europe. Colombia’s Caribbean coast has great potential for offshore windpower projects but is also home to protected areas of ecological importance. Elsewhere, other renewableenergy projects have been unable to connect and deliver power to the grid, the National Interconnected System.
Alberta: Speak Up For a SAFE Climate: Take Action Here How Climate Action Makes Life More Affordable Renewableenergy, including solar and windpower, is much cheaper and less polluting than burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil and coal. In the last three fiscal years, the government of Alberta has provided $4.8
Hydrogen’s supply-side has been buttressed by incentives from state and federal governments, refineries and utilities looking to extend the life of fossil fuel infrastructure, and renewableenergy companies seeking to take advantage of the huge amounts of clean energy needed to produce green hydrogen.
With the Climate Resiliency Initiative, the Conservancy is targeting two types of actions: climate mitigation (direct, tangible efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions) and climate adaptation (planning for resilience against the impacts of climate change).
The changes are designed to support a renewableenergy grid, make buildings more energy efficient, support the use of electric vehicles, and reduce waste and stormwater runoff. Create the newly defined use “energy infrastructure equipment” (EIE), and add it to Use Groups 4, 6, and 14 (ZR 12-10, 22-14, 32-15, 32-23).
On August 9, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority announced it would be committing to the purchase of windpower and the use of clean energy to support the production and operations of water services. PWSA holds the largest share at 30% of the total, underlining our strong commitment to sustainable energy practices. “It
The Plan offers strategies and actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Louisiana. The development of offshore windenergy would aid in meeting the State’s goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
On Monday, July 27, the Sabin Center filed comments with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in support of the proposed Vineyard Windenergy facility offshore Massachusetts on behalf of the group Win with South Fork Wind (“Win with Wind”). Read the letter here.
With a view to traditional media outlets, the discourse is dominated by the Covid-19 crisis, and frequently disregards other themes, such as climate and energy policy. Opinions on that matter differ significantly, especially when it comes to nuclear energy and different sources of renewableenergy.
They have deployed energy-saving technologies such as low-carbon building materials including recycled cement, and what they call smart snowmaking which uses 20% less water than traditional technologies. Fully powered by renewableenergy. million tonnes emitted for South Korea’s Pyeongchang Games in 2018.
Fossil gas, which is used for heating, electricity, and industrial processes, is responsible for one third of Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions and is harmful to human health. You can use fossil gas which is highly polluting, or you can use renewableenergy like wind and solar. It’s not natural, safe, or clean.
4] Meanwhile, many experts see in recent trends an inevitable transition away from coal and nuclear power plants, designed to function as baseload capacity, toward variable renewableenergy sources with just-in-time natural gas back-up. 7] Nuclear plants are among the most reliable components of America’s power grids.
Josh Shapiro joined Department of General Services Secretary Reggie McNeil, Constellation President & CEO Joseph Dominguez, and Lightsource bp Senior Vice President Alyssa Edwards to unveil the Commonwealth’s renewableenergy initiative, the Pennsylvania Project to Utilize Light and Solar Energy (PA PULSE).
Renewables now account for 44% of the EU electricity mix and windpower is now producing more electricity than natural gas. At the beginning of the year Spain, Germany and the Netherlands announced that they generated 50 % of their electricity from renewables in 2023. and 9 GW of onshore wind.
This blog post is adapted from testimony delivered at the New York City Department of Buildings hearing on proposed rule §103-14 , Procedures for Reporting on and Complying with Annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Certain Buildings in connection with the City’s building performance standard, Local Law 97.
As detailed in the RGGI investment plan , these funds are typically used to support energy efficiency and renewableenergy programs in New York State. Most of the carbon allowances are auctioned and the proceeds of those auctions are typically used to promote energy conservation and renewableenergy programs.
To avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis, it’s crucial that we shift energy production away from the unsustainable fossil fuels that cause climate change and towards those that release little to no greenhouse gases (GHG), such as solar and windpower.
I was told that large-scale solar and windpower facilities are being installed throughout the country, as part of an ambitious program, aimed at supplying at least fifty percent of Morocco’s electricity from renewable sources by 2050. Mr. Mezour called on delegates “to be more ambitious in your commitments” under the Agreement.
While solar PV and windpower are grabbing headlines, another clean energy revolution is silently taking place. According to the IPCC, this greenhouse gas is 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a twenty-year period (and 34 times more potent over a century).
