I am grateful to have met and learned from people who experience on a daily basis the devastation wrought by fossilfuel production and fossilfuel-driven climate change—and who are now campaigning for a fossil-free Niger Delta.
We already have so many of the foundational technological building blocks of the clean energy transition at hand: renewables, energy efficiency, energy storage, and pathways to electrifying a vast array of energy end uses. Meanwhile, we have young people taking to the streets demanding real and sustained action.
Federal government releases new policy aimed at ending international public financing for fossilfuels, next step is ending domestic financing . This new policy will end a significant portion of EDC’s support for fossilfuels and redirect those funds to support the clean energy transition.
In his inaugural address , incoming General Assembly President Peter Thompson declared that the session would focus on advancing the seventeen SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs), adopted in September 2015. In this new era, questions abound regarding what constitutes “sustainable” development and how to achieve it.
The SustainableDevelopment Goals outlined by the UN Foundation in 2015 not only provide a guideline for an ideal future, but also illustrate the multi-pronged dilemma of emerging economies. Developing countries need renewableenergy investments of about US$1.7 ” Energy Policy 140 (2020): 111428.
The focus was clear: climate action, transitioning to cleaner energy, advancing SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) and preparing for COP28 (the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference). The plea from climate-vulnerable nations to phase out fossilfuels echoed throughout the United Nations corridors and beyond.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, fossilfuel production accounts for 35% of global greenhouse gas emissions. For the first time, Ocean Conservancy attended the annual International RenewableEnergy Agency (IRENA) Assembly to help advance a just clean-energy transition.
This could be met from a variety of sources—including pollution fees on fossilfuel companies, the elimination of fossilfuel subsidies, and wealth taxes on the richest people. Clear follow-through on last year’s agreement transition away from fossilfuels. Progress on support for climate adaptation.
By Anders Lorenzen The world invested a record-high amount in renewables in 2022, a report from the International RenewableEnergy Agency (IRENA) has found. It revealed that the global investments in renewableenergy as well as energy efficiency reached $ 1.3 Photo credit: IRENA.
Bangladesh and Pakistan have promised significant reductions in their carbon emissions, but both countries continue to invest in and rely on fossilfuel infrastructure, particularly coal and gas. Holding on to too much coal also means that adding a lot of new renewableenergy capacity may not necessarily help decarbonise the economy.
Especially on things like fossilfuels exclusion policies, net-zero targets, and long-term scenario analysis for their portfolio.”? . Reliance plans to achieve net-zero by 2035 , and Adani aims to become the world’s largest renewableenergy producer , with a $70 billion investment by 2030. But time is running out.
Based on the lifetime of currently operating fossilfuel power plants and planned plants, it is highly likely global warming will exceed 1.5°C As the graph shows, policies on land-use, agriculture, and renewableenergy hold a lot of potential for net GHG emissions reduction. C according to projections.
With the effects of Climate Change an imminent threat to the world and with cities contributing to more than 60% of Global Greenhouse Gas emissions (United Nations, 2021), future cities will also need to secure sustainabledevelopment. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, to stay within 1.5-degree Foster, 2020.Urban
Despite the worldwide mobilisation towards the adoption of renewableenergy, the Brazilian government continues to promote the use of coal, the most polluting fossilfuel. The UN’s climate conference, COP26 , has seen more than 70 countries commit to putting an end to energy sources such as coal by mid-century.
To make matters even worse, higher and higher temperatures and extreme weather phenomenon remind us each year in a more pressing way the urgency of decreasing our fossilfuels reliance. No doubt this could accelerate a transition away from fossilfuels and environmental destruction.
As more and more institutions and people are divesting from fossilfuels globally, climate responsible finance is booming. The money will be allocated to energy efficiency and renewableenergy solutions, among many others. If growth was slow from the first green bond issuance to 2012, things have accelerated since.
PV Magazine published at the beginning of the year an article stating that fossilfuels already had peaked. Renewables are indeed on an exponential, as “By 2024, renewableenergy capacity is expected to be twice that of the total cumulative installed capacity in 2019.
Coming on the heels of the powerful ‘ March to End FossilFuels’ last weekend, this summit continues the pressure on governments to meet the urgency of the moment. On September 20, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres is hosting a Climate Ambition Summit seeking to galvanize greater climate action from world leaders.
Digesters are key nodes in a growing movement to use biogas derived from animal manure for energy, sometimes under the guise of “green” or “renewable” energy. This practice helps farmers replace or retrofit fossil-fuel burning combustion engines and systems with cleaner and/or more renewable options.
This year, we yet again witnessed the dramatic consequences of the world’s continued burning of fossilfuels, such as hurricane Debby in Quebec, the wildfires in Jasper, and the flooding in southern Ontario. Canada was one of the worst countries for enabling fossilfuel lobbyists to participate.
Instead, it turns out that the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta have spent a minimum of $23 billion on fossilfuel pipelines since 2018. Take Action: Tell Canada to end subsides for fossilfuel projects.
That means we’ll need to quickly add additional clean energy policies and policies to phase out fossilfuels just to meet our 2030 goals. Failing to provide this finance not only risks the world’s ability to cut emissions sharply and quickly, it is also imposing an increasingly unjust toll on the least developed nations.
Machinery, motor vehicles, and our homes are said to be energy efficient the more energy that is extracted from lower or smaller volumes of the source. Fossilfuel : Any mineralized formerly organic material extracted from the ground and used in energy production: coal, natural gas, oil.

These funds should be aligned with pro-nature growth in line with the SustainableDevelopment Goals, the Paris Agreement and the upcoming global framework on biodiversity. These agreements form the only viable global roadmap to protecting the natural world that sustains us and lifting billions of people out of poverty.
In a nutshell, the European Commission acknowledges that the transition towards a climate-neutral economy will have economic and social impacts, especially on regions that rely on fossilfuels extraction and treatment (e.g. refineries) or on highly carbon-intensive industries (such as cement plants or smelters).
Low-carbon energy plans could be deployed quicker. Fossilfuel subsidies could be ratcheted down. Even as the global poverty rate rose for the first time in two decades and more people in developing countries were thrust into poverty, utilities proved more resilient than expected. Progress toward the U.N.’s And the U.S.
Michael Moore’s last movie, Planet of the Humans , questions the reliability, affordability and sustainability of renewableenergy. The thought-provoking film also highlights the renewables’ dependence on fossilfuels. What are the limitations of renewable technologies? So, is burning trees renewable?
I further argue that, if we continue to develop in these ways, deaths from natural disasters will continue to decline, food surpluses will continue to rise, and global carbon emissions will likely peak and decline soon, preventing temperatures from rising more than three degrees centigrade over pre-industrial levels.
Glasgow — Today at COP26, Canada, US, Mali, UK, and 20 other countries and institutions from both developed and developing countries launched a joint statement committing to end direct international public finance for unabated coal, oil and gas by the end of 2022 and prioritize clean energy finance. This was 2.5
