The destruction caused by climate change is directly linked to human activity, primarily burning fossilfuels. There are multiple realistic, tangible solutions that would rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, yet policy addressing anthropogenic climate change remains slow and insufficient.
In recent advice to the government, the Net Zero Advisory Body made clear that even a 50 to 55 per cent reduction wouldnt represent Canada doing its fair share in reducing greenhouse gas pollution. These will only keep increasing unless Canada seriously commits to replacing fossilfuels with renewableenergy.
After 30 years of international negotiations failing to mention the root cause of the climate crisis, the acknowledgement that we must phase out all fossilfuels and massively scale up renewableenergy in order to effectively tackle the climate crisis, was both long overdue and extremely significant.
The result is that countries in the Global South have not been granted the necessary funds to adapt to climate disasters or to effectively reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions. In 2023 at COP28 , countries agreed to “transition away from fossilfuels” and scale up renewableenergy and energy efficiency.
The ocean absorbs more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gasses and generates 50% of the oxygen we breathe. Collaborative Optimism The upcoming political landscape in the United States may seem like a setback for global climate action, but the momentum for climate action and energy transition remains unstoppable.
Earlier this month at COP28 countries committed to transitioning off of fossilfuels and massively scaling up renewableenergy instead. So you’re excused if, like me, you’re baffled by Minister Freeland’s first move in the wake of COP28: a giant new fossilfuel subsidy, via the new Canada Growth Fund.
As we electrify everything, from our cars to our home heating systems, we need electricity to come from sources that dont emit greenhouse gases. To deliver on this goal, the federal government made important investments in renewableenergy projects. Fossil gas is not a bridge fuel and it must be phased out.
They are useful tools for incentivizing things that we want more of – like renewableenergy. That’s what the proposed clean energy tax credit does. Hydrogen, like electricity, is an energy carrier – it can be used to store and deliver usable energy, for example to a cement or steel factory or to produce fertilizer.
The post G7 Moving Towards RenewableEnergy and Zero Carbon appeared first on Environment + Energy Leader. Likewise, they also discussed the importance of critical minerals, ones often used in high-tech products, as needing to adopt ethical and environmental standards.
It attempted to move away from fossilfuels and toward zero-carbon sources like solar power to supply electricity. Section 115 was probably aimed at more localized pollution problems like acid rain, but greenhouse gases unquestionably cause serious harm in other countries. The Plan was Obama’s signature climate policy.
energy policy has done little to incentivize the growth of these technologies, relying on a patchwork of energy credit programs, tax breaks, and development spending to promote renewableenergy production. But as the market grows, some urge caution before using wastewater to create renewable natural gas.
EPA regulation of greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act (CAA) A. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rules bearing on electricity transmission E. FERC rules for wholesale markets that impact renewableenergy. Rules relating to renewable and fossilfuel development on public lands and offshore.
The Premier and her government are so focused on picking fights with Ottawa that they are missing the fact that there are now more people employed in the development of renewableenergy around the world than people working in oil and gas.
California has been at the forefront of everything from limits on greenhouse gas emissions and 100% renewableenergy requirements, to a human right to water. Right now, UCS is working towards a fast and fair fossilfuel phase out. Up until now, taxpayers have footed the bill for the damages.
In order to achieve the greenhouse gas reductions needed to sustain a livable climate, we must scale up renewableenergy capacity at a rapid pace. The resource bank is part of the work of the RenewableEnergy Legal Defense Initiative (RELDI). Read more about RELDI here and visit the resource bank here.
In 2011, Tregs Independent Brewing worked with Solar RenewableEnergy to install a rooftop solar array large enough to produce 15-20 percent of its annual electricity usage. The 1,628 panels, partnered with a new white roof membrane and added insulation, make the brewery more energy efficient while saving on their electricity bills.
Fuel transport – Spring floods can hinder the transportation of fuels like coal. While it is a heavily polluting fossilfuel that is set to continue declining as a fuel source for US electricity generation over the next decade, coal still accounted for roughly 20 percent of the country’s generation in 2022.
This moratorium on renewableenergy is bad for business, bad for the environment and bad for Albertans. Scaling up renewableenergy is essential to addressing the climate crisis. Alberta has been Canada’s leading province for building renewableenergy. Stopping now makes no sense.
For the past two decades, explicit state policy has been to transition as quickly as possible from reliance on fossilfuels to renewableenergy sources–motivated primarily by climate change concerns and the critical need to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.
It is overwhelmingly produced by a process known as steam methane reforming (SMR), which is heavily carbon-polluting, and the resulting hydrogen is primarily consumed as a feedstock for industrial purposes, such as oil refining and fertilizer production, not as a way to displace fossilfuels. And this isn’t just hypothetical.
They called expert witnesses to calculate the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by activity in Montana, a major gas and coal producing state, and connected that to tangible impacts on ecosystems and humans in the state. ” Prioritizing fossilfuels over renewableenergy in 2023 for insubstantial reasons does not pass strict scrutiny.
Currently, plastics drive at least 3-4% of global greenhouse gas emissions and are the fastest-growing demand for fossilfuels. It is estimated that if plastic use keeps growing at the current rate, then by 2050, plastics will drive 20% of global oil demandmore per person than used to fuel our cars.
Planning law has proven to be a useful tool for climate activists seeking to block or challenge new fossilfuel developments. However, it has also been used to frustrate efforts to accelerate the renewableenergy transition by delaying the construction of new renewableenergy infrastructure (see here ).
The LCFS is designed to hold fuel producers accountable for their supply chain emissions The LCFS and related Clean Fuel Standard policies are performance standards for transportation fuel based on lifecycle analysis. Negative CI scores undermine California’s goal of phasing out fossilfuels and combustion fuels in general.
The country will also target 5,000 kilometres of new transmission lines, an 8% reduction in overall energy demand, and one gigawatt (GW) of distributed generation, with the government putting the plan’s estimated costs at US$86.6 These targets represent a potentially significant shift in Argentina ’s energy mix.
But do not doubt this: there is currently enough power generation and transmission currently to serve the increase in charging load from EV purchases in the next few years, particularly if they are charged at times when other demands for power are less (such as overnight) or at times of high renewableenergy generation.
Nearly all of these plastics are made from fossilfuels including crude oil, natural gas liquids and coal. These tiny organisms perform a critically important service for the climate: like trees, they uptake carbon, helping the ocean absorb one third of our greenhouse gas emissions. Enter Your Email.loading. It takes about 0.4
There’s a lot of discussion of how the private sector is supporting renewableenergy, but it’s almost all about power consumers like Apple and Walmart. It turns out that most of them are 50-60% reliant on fossilfuels, with a lot of the remainder coming from nuclear and hydro. FossilFuel Use. Carbon Goal.
Until 2030 the EU shall emit 55 % less Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG), compared to 1990 levels. According to the Communication, buildings and power generation can make the largest and most cost-efficient emissions reductions, in the order of 60% and more compared to 2015, to reach the 55% greenhouse gas emissions reduction target (p.8).
Methane is responsible for 30 per cent of the current global temperature rise to date globally, and over 14 per cent of Canada’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. “A To advance a climate aligned financial system, fossilfuels like ‘natural’ gas should not be included under a Canadian sustainable finance label.”
We need big investments in the energy transition from polluting fossilfuels to clean renewableenergy. Did you know that economists have a tool for calculating the cost to society of continued reliance on fossilfuels? But the cost of not taking those actions is far greater.
Carbon capture has never worked as promised, the carbon is dangerous to transport, and the technology is extremely expensive, especially compared to the plummeting costs of renewableenergy. Of course, this should come as no surprise from a province that put a moratorium on renewableenergy development.
There’s a direct line of culpability between fossilfuel corporations and climate change – it’s why so many oil and gas CEOs have topped our list of Climate Villains. But they aren’t the only powerful players who shoulder responsibility for keeping us hooked on fossilfuels, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Batteries are key to enabling the renewableenergy transition. When the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, batteries help store clean energy to continue supplying electricity to the grid and to customers consistently and reliably. A fossilfuelenergy grid extracts and expends finite resources.
State of Montana, a Montana trial court ruled that the state Constitution’s guarantee of a healthy and clean environment prevails over Montana’s longstanding fossil-fuel-based state energy system. The first legal challenge mounted by Our Children’s Trust was Juliana v. United States.
At UCS, we’re working to ensure effective and equitable implementation of key clean energy and clean transportation provisions. The IRA also includes some less than ideal fossil-fuel supporting incentives that will need continued monitoring.
What makes me most optimistic are the recent technological innovations and falling costs for renewableenergy generation, battery storage and alternative fuel vehicles. Nations are unlikely to adopt aggressive climate change if they feel other nations are cheating and emitting fossilfuels.
The Premier had made it very clear in past statements that she is biased against renewableenergy, and instead favours projects that cause pollution, limit Alberta’s future economic growth, and contribute to global climate change. In 2023, Alberta led the country in renewableenergy investment.
Let’s look at the three technological strategies which would lead to decarbonization of the transportation sector and the phaseout of petroleum by midcentury: 1) electrification, 2) strengthening greenhouse gas emission standards and fuel economy standards, and 3) clean liquid fuels.
However, it’s a disappointment to the initiative’s proponents and to a larger group of environmental advocates who seek to promote California’s quick transition from reliance on heavily-polluting and climate-damaging fossilfuels to renewableenergy resources.
By Anders Lorenzen The renewableenergy sector experienced record growth in 2022 of 1%. But despite this, it did not shift the dominance of fossilfuels. They still account for 82% of the global energy supply according to the industry’s Statistical Review of World Energy released this week.
We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions now, as Dr. Sarah Cooley , Ocean Conservancy’s director of climate science, emphasized when addressing a COP27 session. There was also no formal commitment to phaseouts of all fossilfuels, and even some countries supporting phaseouts are planning to expand fossilfuel production.
Energy use accounts for the bulk of greenhouse gas emissions. The key to getting climate change under control is to rapidly decrease the user of fossilfuels. These facts make energy law central to one of the biggest issues now facing humanity. There are three interlinked reasons for the change. Climate change.
CCS is a multi-billion dollar boondoggle that doesn’t come close to the hype, has significant safety risks, and is a substantial distraction from real climate solutions, such as building more renewableenergy, increasing electricity transmission infrastructure, and developing and using storage technology.
