Much evidence has surfaced about the tactics to which fossilfuel companies have resorted to distort the facts, intimidate their opponents, and block climate action that might hurt their bottom lines. The following blog is an excerpt from the UCS Report Decades of Deceit. Read the full report here.
California has made tremendous progress in its transition away from fossilfuel energy and transportation and towards zero emission transportation powered predominately by clean electricity. Further, proposals that would undermine health protections or compromise the transition away from fossilfuels should be rejected.
The fossilfuel industrys role in driving climate change is undeniable, yet corporate accountability remains a contested space. As the scientific evidence strengthens, courts around the world are increasingly considering the role of major fossilfuel companies in climate-related damages.
Statement from Julia Levin, Associate Director, National Climate Fossilfuel lobbyists are once again swarming the international climate negotiations, including within Canada’s official delegation. It’s also much higher than the eight people with ties to the fossilfuel industry included in Canada’s list of badge holders at COP27.
The fossilfuel industry has long been the main driver of climate change, but Big Oil’s CEOs and profiteers would like you to believe that it is a part of the solution. One of the people peddling this idea is the man behind Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) – Murray Edwards, the FossilFuel Fanatic.
Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People The majority of Canadians want to see governments in Canada tackle the climate crisis by prioritizing renewable energy and phasing out fossilfuels, according to a poll commissioned by Environmental Defence and conducted by Abacus Data.
After the hottest summer on record, the world continues to witness extreme weather fueled by the burning of fossilfuels. We need to stop burning fossilfuels immediately. Thankfully, we are in the midst of a much-needed transition away from fossilfuels and towards a future powered by more renewables.
This could be met from a variety of sources—including pollution fees on fossilfuel companies, the elimination of fossilfuel subsidies, and wealth taxes on the richest people. Despite important gains in renewable energy, there is still more progress needed and fossilfuels continue to expand at odds with this agreement.
In a new study released today, UCS attributes substantial temperature and sea level rise to emissions traced to the largest fossilfuel producers and cement manufacturers. Every delay in phasing out fossilfuels will burden future generations who need to adapt to rising seas and recover from loss and damage due to sea level impacts.
On November 12, Moms Clean Air Force , Environmental Health Project , and Clean Air Council held a press conference at the Pennsylvania State Capitol calling on state leaders to safeguard Pennsylvanians from the impacts of a fossilfuel and plastic industry buildout. Steele, executive director of the Environmental Health Project.
Scientists are sounding the alarm because this warming is shockingly bigbigger than what we would have expected given the long-term warming trend from fossilfuel-caused climate change. Meanwhile, sharply cutting our use of fossilfuels is the best way to limit carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, the primary driver of climate change.
States must regulate high-emitting companies —The Court clearly stated that certain sectors and industries, namely the fossilfuel industry and agribusinesses have played an outsized role in driving climate change, and as a result, must work toward reporting and reducing their GHG emissions.
In an interview, Muhammad Mustafa Amjad, of Islamabad-based Renewables First, says his country can stand as a model for other nations as they transition away from fossilfuels. Fed up with pricey electricity from an unreliable grid, Pakistanis have snapped up cheap solar panels. Read more on E360 →
You or someone you know needs clean backup power Walking my dog the day after Hurricane Milton swept through my Orlando, FL neighborhood, the rumble of fossilfuel-powered generators interrupted what would have been a welcome quiet after the storm. I don’t blame them.
The bill ( LD 1868 ), passed by the Maine Legislature on June 13, will reduce the state’s reliance on imported fossilfuels by requiring all of Maine’s power to come from renewable energy and other carbon-free electricity sources by 2040. She signed the bill into law on June 20, 2025.
As the climate crisis deepens, so does the urgency to hold fossilfuel companies accountable for decades of deception. As the fossilfuel industry spares no expense to obscure these truths, the work of scientists who engage with climate litigation is increasingly vital.
This verdict is yet another example of the fossilfuel industrys agenda being enacted by multiple levels and branches of government. Here at the Union of Concerned Scientists, were resisting through Protect the Protest anti-SLAPP taskforceand by organizing a climate accountability campaign targeting the fossilfuel industry.
And m itigationour failure to quickly transition away from fossil fuelsis part of the story. Science tells us that burning fossilfuels is a large part of what makes wildfires like the Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires more likely and more severe by creating this hydroclimate whiplash. But e xtreme weather is already the context.
The future trajectories are based on different scenarios, such as versions of the future where the world comes together to take action and phase out fossilfuels, or versions where fossilfuel production continues throughout this century.
Special session takes on big oil and wins The transition to clean transportation and away from fossilfuels is here. Policies like this will be critical to ensure that the fossilfuels phaseout is equitable and Big Oil doesn’t squeeze every dollar out of California consumers on the way out the door.
We know that the fact that some of the approaches to cutting CO 2 could keep gas in a central role for a long time makes them favorites of the fossilfuel industry and electric utility allies—and that whenever the fossilfuel industry is involved, you can bet that obfuscation and disinformation are close at hand.
In this case, the bills would allow states to secure funds from fossilfuel companies for the costs of adaptation, mitigation, and cleanup of damages caused by their emissions. This legislation would require the largest fossilfuel companies to pay into a $1 trillion Polluters Pay Climate Fund.
Even with the clean energy transition well underway, gas plants will be around for a while as we phase out fossilfuels. These modeling results point to the larger challenge of transitioning all the way to 100% clean electricity and completely phasing out fossilfuel electricity generation.

So now it’s time to think seriously about what amount of energy storage the state may need to complement renewable energy resources that are coming onto the grid to replace fossilfuel plants. Setting a storage target is different than setting a renewables target (such as a renewable portfolio standard).
If we are to protect the ocean, its marine ecosystems and the people who depend on them, we must address climate change at its root: the burning of fossilfuels for energy. Fossilfuels (such as natural gas, oil and coal) are global commodities that are imported and exported. Together we can change course.
As we look to find ways out of this crisis, lets keep in mind the continued mismatch in time horizons for decision making in the insurance marketplace and the climate impacts we have unleashed and are locking in for the long term by continuing to burn fossilfuels today.
By Dan Gearino, ICN Staff In a year of record-setting heat, intensifying extreme weather and a bitterly partisan presidential election in which climate change was almost never mentioned, the transition away from fossilfuels made significant progress that was still not nearly enough.
Policy drivers State leadership has been important in driving the development and adoption of clean energy for decades, and remains key to accelerating the move toward clean energy and away from fossilfuels.
Even where the grid still has significant fossilfuel-powered generation, EVs are a cleaner choice. In the grid region that serves most of Texas, driving the average EV produces emissions equal to an 83 mpg gasoline car, despite over 60% of electricity generation coming from fossilfuels.
Photo by MRC Témiscamingue via Unsplash The case for decarbonization to address climate change is often, understandably, directed toward the fossilfuel industry. This report found that animal agriculture emits approximately 115 megatons of methane per year, equaling the emissions of the entire fossilfuel sector.
This year, we yet again witnessed the dramatic consequences of the world’s continued burning of fossilfuels, such as hurricane Debby in Quebec, the wildfires in Jasper, and the flooding in southern Ontario. Canada was one of the worst countries for enabling fossilfuel lobbyists to participate.
Without a strong oil and gas pollution cap, fossilfuel companies will continue to prioritize their profits at the expense of our health, climate and future. Even in Alberta, which has the lowest support for renewable energy, only 18 per cent of respondents want to see fossilfuels prioritized.
Young people today will be exposed to a number of heat waves that no one would have experienced before the burning of fossilfuels started raising global temperatures
In 2023 at COP28 , countries agreed to “transition away from fossilfuels” and scale up renewable energy and energy efficiency. It took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, in a context of mounting climate-disasters and a fossilfuel driven affordability crisis.
The fossilfuel industry has known that its products are fueling the climate crisis for decades. Since their launch in 2012, the organisation has dedicated itself to encouraging Canadians to pledge support for the fossilfuel industry.
After 30 years of international negotiations failing to mention the root cause of the climate crisis, the acknowledgement that we must phase out all fossilfuels and massively scale up renewable energy in order to effectively tackle the climate crisis, was both long overdue and extremely significant.
The fossilfuel lobby meets with public servants and elected officials more than 3.5 The fossilfuel lobbyists had 149 meetings: 63 meetings in July, 43 meetings in August, and another 43 in September. It’s no wonder that climate policies in Canada are moving forward at a snail’s pace. times per working day!
These will only keep increasing unless Canada seriously commits to replacing fossilfuels with renewable energy. New polling shows that a majority of Canadians want governments in Canada to phase out our dependence on fossilfuels and prioritize renewable energy. Canadians are calling for governments to do just that.
But this year, 2024, was different – Canadian seniors in 76 locations mobilized 6000 people to call for a better world, free from the destruction caused by burning fossilfuels. We also have to: integrate our support for, and build stronger alliances with, the Indigenous peoples who are leading the resistance to fossilfuel expansion.
Over its short lifetime, the program has already transformed many segments of the fuels market. More than two-thirds of our diesel comes from renewable, non-petroleum resources, and many California refineries are shifting from refining fossilfuels to refining waste oils and other renewable feedstocks.
To underscore the negative impacts of fossilfuels on our grid, I also pointed to key research around resilience. With a robust climate plan, Wisconsin utilities would have to look beyond their legacy preference for fossilfuels and consider cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable alternatives.
Renewable energy technologies are rapidly advancing, becoming increasingly competitive and, in many cases, becoming cheaper in cost and more efficient than fossilfuels. This progress will continue to outpace any efforts to sustain outdated and inefficient fossilfuel systems.
One … Continue reading Energy security is being used to justify more fossilfuels but this will only make us less secure It does so as the world grapples with war, geopolitical realignments and trade barriers, against a backdrop of accelerating climate upheavals.
