The Sabin Center today released the second in a series of white papers discussing legal issues associated with different ocean-based carbon dioxide removal techniques. the growing of kelp and other macroalgae which may be harvested for food, bioenergy, or other uses or sunk in the ocean to sequester the carbon it contains.

Acidification : Reducing the pH rating of a substance making it more acidic in nature, for example, increased carbon emissions lead to the oceans absorbing more of it, increasing acidification and damaging ecology such as coral bleaching. Dilution of salts in our oceans can affect the ecological balance of that ocean.

Hatcheries like the Carson National Fish Hatchery, pictured here, breed millions of salmon and let them grow until they are mature enough to be released so they can try to swim to the ocean. Nearly 250 million young salmon, most of them from hatcheries, head to the ocean each year — roughly three times as many as before any dams were built.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act requires NMFS to prevent the depletion of endangered marine mammals that interact with commercial fisheries, the court stated, and the Endangered Species Act embodies Congress’s “plain intent. to halt and reverse the trend toward species extinction, whatever the cost.” .
