We are about to enter the era of the electric truck. Sure, there are already a few thousand electric trucks and buses on US roads already. There has been, understandably, some anxiety about where all of these trucks will charge and how the electric grid will serve that new electrical load.
At this point, I’d wager that pretty much everyone in the US either has been affected or knows someone who has been affected recently by a natural disaster-related electric power outage. Indeed, for people who use electric-powered medical devices, a power outage is life-threatening. That doesn’t reduce the hardship of a power outage.
Wastewater-to-energy systems start with a process called anaerobic digestion, which treatment plants have been using for ages to reduce the volume of sewage waste. Utilities can use this energy to power their own treatment works, or they can sell it back to the grid as renewable natural gas (RNG) or electricity.
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) included a major—forthcoming—refresh for one of the biggest policy drivers of the nation’s clean energy transition to date: tax credits subsidizing the deployment of clean electricity resources. the GHGs emitted into the atmosphere by a facility in the production of electricity—is not greater than zero.
That’s driving part of its effort to shift from the internal combustion engine to electric vehicles. The post Sustainability Is Key to Nissan’s Success, Including Selling More EVs and Reducing Waste appeared first on Environment + Energy Leader. Nissan's focus is on sustainability and reducing CO2 emissions.
Now, more than 25% of its purchased electricity comes from clean energy. The post Dow Is Buying Renewables and Cutting Waste In Its Environmental Quests appeared first on Environment + Energy Leader. Dow says it will reduce CO2 releases by 2 million metric tons a year while growing its earnings by an estimated $2 billion by 2025.
Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) sets a bold goal for the state—no carbon pollution from electricity generation by 2045, which means zero global warming emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants.
But extreme heat also hits our electricity system in ways that make it more expensive, more polluting, and less reliable. Extreme heat means more expensive electricity Extreme heat can sharply increase electricity consumption as people turn up their air conditioners for relief. Here’s how. That’s the supply part.
Earlier this month, the US Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service hosted a public hearing on their recent proposed rules governing implementation of the Section 45Y Clean Electricity Production Credit and the Section 48E Clean Electricity Investment Credit. My testimony is copied below. Feedstock eligibility.
A 100 year journey The journey began in 1925, and it is a hundred years to the day since the first electric train ran in India, a suburban service running into Mumbai. It was in 2014 that the government ramped up ambitions and committed the funds for a fully electric railway. The pace of change doubled and then doubled again.
To be more specific, the law forbids the California Energy Commission from issuing a permit to any new nuclear fission power plants until theres a way to dispose of toxic and long-lived nuclear waste. The California Energy Commissions SB 100 report examined various scenarios that reach 100% clean electricity in California.
Energy storage, or the storing of electricity for later use on the power grid, plays an important role in the clean energy transition. Renewable generation is variable—wind and solar power produce electricity when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining. Curtailment means we are wasting otherwise clean, perfectly usable electricity.
SMRs are nuclear reactors that are “small” (defined as 300 megawatts of electrical power or less), can be largely assembled in a centralized facility, and would be installed in a modular fashion at power generation sites. What are SMRs? Some proposed SMRs are so tiny (20 megawatts or less) that they are called “micro” reactors.
When data types like electricity, water, waste, gas, supplier data, performance KPIs, and more exist in many siloed systems, the question is: Where do you even start? The post How Organizations Can Prepare Their ESG Data for Sustainability Reporting appeared first on Environment + Energy Leader.
More than two-thirds of our diesel comes from renewable, non-petroleum resources, and many California refineries are shifting from refining fossil fuels to refining waste oils and other renewable feedstocks. Over its short lifetime, the program has already transformed many segments of the fuels market.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are increasing , and these vehicles are important to reduce fossil fuel use and air pollution. Relying on market dynamics alone risks wasted materials, unsafe and unregulated dismantling, and a lack of accountability for proper disposal.
If the forest was unlikely to be cut down, this is a waste of money and bogus credits. The IRA provides a subsidy for purchases of electric vehicles for people making less than $300,000 per year. Would many of these people have bought EV’s, anyway?
As the market for the electric buses, cars, trucks, and trains that help curb the climate crisis continues to grow globally, the battery supply chain faces increased scrutiny.
Bidirectional EVs Could Be the New Standard Electric vehicles (EVs) should be a clean transportation and a clean energy solution. This could let drivers use these batteries to power critical appliances during emergencies, their homes during power shutoffs, or even the grid when electricity demand is high.
Industrial waste can make rudimentary batteries. That's likely no good in electric cars etc, but could be ideal for stashing away vast surpluses of renewable power.
Route 220 in Bedford Township is being built for a facility that provides liquid natural gas as fuel for electricity generation, transportation and heat. The renewable energy source has generated more than 959,000 kilowatt-hours of energy, or 76% of the facilitys total electricity. And Going Higher?
The size of the toxic ash pile at the Scrubgrass cryptomining facility had turned waste coal into an even riskier form of pollution, said Patrick McDonnell, President and CEO of PennFuture. uses waste coal to fuel its operations, which results in large quantities of coal ash.
Meanwhile, it remains profoundly cheaper to produce electricity from solar than from new fossil fuel sources. Department of Energy estimated that unrestricted exports of LNG will increase wholesale domestic gas prices by over 30% by 2050.
From cars and trucks to buses and trains, electric vehicles are playing an increasingly vital role in decarbonizing mobility and reducing oil dependence However, this transition brings with it a significant challenge: the immense pressure on battery supply chains.
The House Environmental & Natural Resource Protection Committee is scheduled to meet March 18 to consider six pieces of legislation-- -- Notice Of Oil & Gas Permits: House Bill 43 (Conklin-D-Centre) require publication of newspaper notice of oil and gas well permits; -- Invertebrate Biodiversity: House Bill 441 (Pielli-D-Chester) amends the (..)
Despite its other environmental impacts, including toxic waste that requires centuries or millennia of storage. The post Earth911 Podcast: Can Nano Nuclear Energy’s Microreactors Deliver Equitable Electricity? appeared first on Earth911.
As electric vehicle (EV) sales continue to increase, questions about how these cars and their batteries will be disposed of have been top of mind for current owners, future buyers, policymakers, and many experts in the automotive industry. Recycling is key to making EVs greener. Recycling is key to making EVs greener.
Solar panels generated almost 4 percent of electricity in the US in 2021, up from less than 1 percent in 2015. In some places that number is much higher; for example, 17% of California’s electricity generation came from solar in 2021. Even more encouraging, by 2030, the solar industry aims to generate nearly a third of US electricity.
The Commonwealth is a leading producer of energy and the nations largest exporter of electricity nearly a century ago, Pennsylvania helped to found PJM, and today still serves as a generation backbone for the region. My Administration will continue to work to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable power for Pennsylvanians for the long term.
For DEP, the Agenda includes a proposed regulation establishing an annual permit fee for shale gas wells [ Read more here ] and updated waste management regulations covering conventional oil and gas operations [ Read more here ]. Read more here. Lancaster County. ( Westmoreland County.
A recent Union of Concerned Scientists analysis found that Minnesota could meet its electricity demands with 100-percent renewable energy by 2035, which would provide significant economic and health benefits. million to support electric vehicles , including charging infrastructure and bus electrification. billion budget surplus.
Lithium-ion batteries are essential for decarbonizing transportation through electric vehicles and building a resilient, renewable energy grid through energy storage batteries. By 2050, battery recycling could supply 22 to 27% of lithium, 40 to 46% of nickel, and 45 to 52% of cobalt needed for electric vehicles in the US. The secret?
It is more like a straight line from silica mine, to refining factory, to shimmering batch of shining polysilicon ingots, to panel assembly , to a couple decades generating clean electricity—and then, far too often, to a landfill. If we had price information for each individual food item, then we could shop in a more intelligent way, buying only what we need, wasting less, and prioritizing the more affordable items. We cannot afford to waste that water. You can’t argue for pricing utilities unless people get the price signal, but that is what we do.
Refill points keep the flexibility to buy small, but do away with the waste. Beyond plastic, they aim to be net zero by 2050, and are investing in cycle networks, electric buses, and a doubling of parks and green spaces. Buying just the amount you need of shampoo or detergent helps people to manage their household budgets better.
has agreed to a consent order that includes several actions to ensure compliance with federal and state hazardous waste safeguards at the company’s waste facility in Yukon, Westmoreland County, the U.S. RCRA is the principal federal hazardous waste storage and disposal statute. On April 29, Max Environmental Technologies, Inc.
As electric vehicle charging stations sprout like mushrooms along our roads and clusters of new wind turbines come online, these two clean energy solutions to the climate crisis are becoming more commonplace. But beyond more electric cars and solar panels, what can everyday people do?
