A new analysis out today and led by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) reveals a significant amount of critical infrastructure along US coastlines at risk of disruptive flooding today and in the near future as sealevel rises, potentially affecting millions of coastal residents.
Extreme weather, which is increasing due to climate change , can degrade the electricity system and cause these failures. Power outages are costly, can have extreme impacts on both the health and safety of a population, and can happen at any point in the process of electricity generation, distribution, and usage.
The consequence is global warming, changes to Earth’s hydrological cycle, melting ice and snow, thawing permafrost, rising sealevels and changes to the weather statistics. An enhanced understanding of climate change has been a force behind the growth in solar panels, wind power, and electric cars.
Summer tourism, sealevel rise, and storm surges threaten East Coast wells. Hilton Head is fast becoming a prominent test case of rising sealevels and intense coastal storms heralded by climate change. So if you have enough freshwater on land, then it balances out sealevel. The national electricity plan projected that renewables will exceed coal in 2027. The roadmap calls for Mumbai to get half its electricity from renewables by 2030 and 90% by 2050. Mumbai is on a peninsula and faces severe risks from sealevel rise. Natural gas, oil, and nuclear are minor players.
Everyone will suffer greatly from sea-level rise and climate change if policymakers cede decision-making to corporate interests. In the electric utility industry, this conflict is on display in the debate over who makes decisions on new electric transmission and how to include policies set by state laws.
Opponents of the project objected to their state being used as an “extension cord” when it would receive only five percent of the electricity. John Moss, a Virginia Beach councilman, told Circle of Blue before the election that the projects are worth the cost for a coastal city located in a sea-level rise hot spot. “If
As of 2020, the three largest sources of emissions in Pennsylvania are: -- Electricity Generation (29% of gross emissions) -- Transportation Fuel Consumption (22% of gross emissions) -- Industrial Emissions (19% of gross emissions) Emissions from electricity generation decreased 10.4% from 2019 to 2020 and 44.4% from 2005 to 2020.
Researchers from the University of Washington found that, in the absence of typical spring precipitation, plants along tributaries to the Colorado River consume enough water to meaningfully lower the river level.
Previous IPCC reports have concluded that human activities such as burning fossil fuels are the primary cause of climate change: about 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come from burning fossil fuels for electricity, transportation, and industry.
But despite all of this, I’m actually less concerned about backlash now than I was ten years ago – the reason is the remarkable drop in cost over that decade for the technologies we need to decarbonize our economy , such as renewable electricity generation, and electric vehicles.
Considerations around sealevel rise and intense rains come as the Federal Highway Administration weighs where to effectively locate chargers for the future as more people drive EVs. Read the full story at Smart Cities Dive.
Last year, we helped enact policies that promote low-carbon fuel and electric vehicles in Washington , and reducing “vehicle miles traveled” (VMT) as our state grows is also an important “ drawdown ” strategy critical to achieving emissions reductions. GPa (about 23,000 times atmospheric pressure at sealevel) and it has been theorized to exist in cold subduction zones within the Earth’s crust as well as on Saturn’s icy moon Titan. One of the most-studied high-pressure forms of ice is ice VII, also known as “hot ice”. The team describes its findings in Nature Physics.
Because electricity conducts better in wet rocks and clays than in dry, unaltered volcanic rock, the magnetic field data enabled researchers to build a picture of the subsurface hydrogeology. The y-axis scale is the elevation above sealevel in metres; the x-axis represents distance in metres from a reference point.
The melting of land ice is one of the principal drivers of sealevel rise, threatening coastal and low-lying communities around the globe. One is that the level of solar radiation is relatively low, especially at the Earth’s poles. The concept does have limitations.
A new UCS study released today, Looming Deadlines for Coastal Resilience , shows that risks are growing to vital infrastructure and services that millions of people in coastal communities depend on as global sealevels rise in the coming decades.
Perched at 3,730 metres above sealevel in the community of Ancotanga, the Oruro solar power plant is one of the flagship projects in Bolivia’s energy transition. We are generating economic development and guaranteeing electricity for the [Oruro] department, taking care of Pachamama [Mother Earth],” he tweeted.

Global warming is already having a noticeable impact on our planet – sealevels are rising, polar glaciers are melting, and there have been increases in average temperatures all across the globe. Reduce electricity usage. There are many simple ways to reduce electricity usage in your home.
My background is in electrical engineering and as a graduate student I joined the pre-research team of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) under the supervision of Nan Rendong. m above sealevel and I suffered from severe altitude sickness. How did you get involved in lunar exploration?
As Pennsylvania’s climate has become warmer and there have been more swings in extreme weather, we’re already seeing more frequent flood damage to communities, businesses, homes, and crops and livestock, as well as coastal sealevel rise. DEP is helping to fund increased use of electric vehicles.

The push and pull of progress and catastrophe made 2023 one of the most discordant—and consequential—years for the world’s climate. By ICN Staff In 2023, clean energy progress and the horrors of a radically warming climate fought almost to a draw.
PK: So not just the Belt and Road of power projects and transportation infrastructure, but even high voltage electricity transmission from solar farms and projects like this. And supply chain of that, because you obviously have a lot of waste that’s generated that you don’t want to be dumping back into the sea.
emissions form the generation of purchased or acquired electricity, steam, heat, or cooling that is consumed by operations owned or controlled by [the] registrant.” In addition to describing the nature of each physical risk, registrants would also need to identify the location (by zip code) of at-risk properties, processes, or operations.
And while we’ve begun to transition away from oil and gas for our cars and electricity, the oil and gas industry has responded by investing its vast financial resources in a new source of demand for their products: new production for plastic materials and packaging. redlining.)
Across the city, it plans to reduce electricity consumption by 10.7% a year, and has also sought funding for electric minibuses. Thane is in a high-rainfall zone and also faces the impacts of sealevel rise. Energy efficiency was a core feature of the plan. million tonnes of CO2.

Flooding from Hurricanes Harvey also triggered industrial facilities to spew air pollution during electrical failures, resultant accidents, and unexpected shut-downs. These leaks are only a fraction of the 90,000 barrels spilled in Louisiana in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. Across Texas, Hurricane Harvey resulted in the release of 8.3
Scope 1 emissions are those emitted directly by the company, while Scope 2 emissions result from purchasing electricity, steam, heating, or cooling. Physical risks can be either acute, such as floods or storms, or chronic, like rising sealevels.
Keeping this in mind, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for compliance with the new rules. Greenhouse Gas Emissions The rules require large accelerated filers (LAFs) and accelerated filers (AFs) to disclose material Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 ( i.e., electricity, steam, heating, or cooling) greenhouse gas emissions.
Further, in Section 1 of SB 261, the legislature laid out the findings that necessitate creating a state disclosure regime based on the likely harm that will befall the state’s citizens, economy and environment due to climate change.
Collectively, these projects are expected to generate 3,800 megawatts of electricity, enough to power over one million homes. Earlier this year, the Board of Public Utilities approved two additional off-shore wind projects, bringing to three the number of these facilities.
It recorded the highest temperature, lowest precipitation, lowest river flows, and highest demand for electricity for the time of year. The Sichuan drought has highlighted extreme weather vulnerabilities in China’s electricity systems as well as its supply chains. First, apply climate models to local infrastructure building.
It describes fluctuations between the sealevel atmospheric pressure from the areas known as the Azores High and the Icelandic Low although these are not set in stone (8). Sponsored Content. The North Atlantic Oscillation (or the NAO) occurs in the northern area of the Atlantic Ocean, the second largest ocean on our planet.
Natural gas currently powers approximately 74% of Florida’s total net electricity generation.) Ironically, Florida is likely to be the American state most dramatically and quickly threatened by a changing climate–plagued by even more destructive hurricanes, unprecedented storm surges, and steadily rising sealevel.
Research has shown that the heat-trapping emissions from these companies’ products have led to rising temperatures and sealevels , as well as ocean acidification. My own heat and electricity bill rose by a whopping 40 percent last month. Hurricane Ian was the most expensive US storm of 2022, causing $113 billion in damage.
From more and more days of killer heat , to increased flooding and severe storms , to sealevel rise , to ecosystem impacts in the Chesapeake Bay , Maryland has a huge stake in the climate. There are currently over 100 models of electric trucks available or coming in the next two years in the US, made by over 40 manufacturers.
Many of these are related to climate change, for example, flood zones, sea-level rise, and storm surge based on hurricane categories.
