The Philadelphia Solar Energy Association reports Sycamore International , a successful local electronics recycling company, has expanded its operation into solar reuse and recycling. Sycamore will test solar material, and separate equipment that can be reused from that which needs to be recycled.
At that time, even the largest solar arrays in the world measured only in the hundreds of kilowatts, enough to generate the equivalent of the electricity needs of just a few tens of thousands of US households. I can distinctly remember how wacky it seemed when I first heard someone propose a one-megawatt (1000-kilowatt) solar array.
The US solar industry was valued at $33 billion in 2021, employed more than 230,000 people, and continued to grow in power capacity at an average rate of 33 percent per year. Solar panels generated almost 4 percent of electricity in the US in 2021, up from less than 1 percent in 2015. Meet your solar panel.
A device that can generate electricity while desalinating seawater has been developed by researchers in Saudi Arabia and China, who claim that their new system is highly efficient at performing both tasks. The device uses waste heat from the solar cell for desalination, thereby cooling the solar cell.
Solarpower is booming. GW in 2000 to 760 GW in 2020, and solarpower now generates almost 4% of the world’s electricity, according to the International Energy Agency. But experts say this astonishing growth in low-carbon power is also a … Continue reading Solar panels face recycling challenge.
