A transition to renewableenergy is not just one of the most consequential tools at our fingertips to act on climate, but also represents a great opportunity to increase control over our energy choices, improve the health of our communities and the planet, create jobs and wealth, and much more. by 2035 is needed.
All political leaders should be bolder on climate. Still, they were able to implement carbon pricing, a climate accountability act, an electric vehicle sales standard, clean electricity rules, a sustainable jobs act and methane reduction regulations – and thats not even an exhaustive list.
Much of our electricity system is 50 to 70 years old, yet current plans for domestic manufacturing, electric vehicle fleets, community solar gardens and more clean energy all depend on a modern grid. New demands for electricity and the need to reduce climate-changing emissions are driving new grid planning efforts.
Minnesotans are facing concurrent crises of climate change, high energy prices and inflation, and the inequitable public health impacts of fossil fuel air pollution. Renewableenergy will help with all of that—but we need a grid that is designed for wind and solar instead of having to rely on expensive coal and gas plants.
Our electricity system will be crucial to decarbonization efforts, both because much of our current energy comes from electricity, and because decarbonizing sectors like transportation will require significant electrification. Restructuring generally addresses one of two parts of the electricity industry: generation and retail.
The best solution: Replace fossil fuels with renewableenergy. Climate change is overwhelmingly caused by burning fossil fuels, and the most immediate path to avert climate disaster is to stop investing in those fuels and start powering our economy with an equitable transition to renewableenergy.
electricity to about one-fifth today. In fact, there was a surge in construction of new coal plants after 1970 due to high electricity demand. Growth in renewableenergy, which was likely driven by state energy policies, took an extra bit out of the market for coal. Another key factor is often overlooked.
The Department of Energy estimates the cost of an electric vehicle lithium-ion battery pack declined 89% between 2008 and 2022. Different batteries may be ideal in settings where charging speed is not a factor, such as utility-scale electricity storage. Prices for battery storage have declined even more sharply.
The Department of Energy’sEnergy Information Administration (EIA) is one of the go-to sources for reliable information about the US power sector. They just released their 2022 “Annual Energy Outlook” (AEO), which is a big deal: it tells us where electricity is headed over the next 30 years. Carbon emissions remain high.
The carport produces enough energy to offset two-thirds of their annual energy usage. The carport system also powers free electric vehicle charging stations available for market customers. Electricity production is not my main job, we sell groceries, said Russ Burkholder, owner of Burkholders Country Market.
Right now, states and the federal government have a choice that will define our country’s options for clean energy and planning the power grid for the challenges ahead. This choice reveals how the electric grid, and the work to cut global warming emissions, are shaped by our political structures. Shared Duties, with Leadership.
Climate action is limited by political will (not technology) In this pivotal moment of history, where the imperative to avert the worst impacts of climate change is clear, the world stands at the cusp of a transformative shift toward a renewableenergy paradigm. What’s lacking is political will.
There are a lot of moving pieces, but it starts with decarbonizing the electricity sector and powering the economy with a diverse combination of clean energy resources—primarily wind, solar, and battery storage—connected with a modernized bulk transmission system that can reliably deliver electricity to consumers all 8,760 hours of the year.
Together we can take advantage of the opportunity for Australia to be a renewableenergy superpower.”. Climate change wasn’t a central issue in the campaign, but resistance to climate action no longer provided a political advantage. The new premier’s views sharply contrasted with those of his predecessor.
And, while renewableenergy is growing fast too, it’s not happening fast enough—and can never happen fast enough if its outpaced by fossil fuel expansion. These climate, health and justice imperatives are the reason the world needs to phase out fossil fuels and transition to clean energy rapidly. Particulate matter (PM2.5)
I work in the electric utility sector, specifically on the grid issues that shape our energy supply choices. I heard some early warnings of data center growth running into grid limits first from tech companies and then from electric utility planners. This growth is a jolt to the usually slow-moving electricity sector.
electricity. With some notable exceptions, they’ve tended to drag their feet on the energy transition. The proposed Clean Energy Standard is one effort to deal with this problem. That doesn’t seem to be politically feasible at the national level, at present. Investor-owned utilities supply almost three-quarters of U.S.
It adds Michigan to the growing list of states, including Illinois and Minnesota , that have adopted standards to increase renewableenergy on the grid and move toward 100-percent decarbonization of the power sector. It also will expand energy efficiency programs, streamline utility-scale renewable project siting approvals, and more.
Like many other public-serving institutions throughout society, electricity and gas utilities are facing calls to be more equitable in their operations, planning, and treatment of customers. How are energy equity and energy justice connected? Energy equity lives under the umbrella of energy justice.
The petitioners who brought this case include state-level political officials and coal companies who are single-mindedly determined to block climate action and perpetuate fossil fuel dependence to serve their narrow political or business interests.
.” Some of the EU’s biggest companies operating in the wind sector such as Siemens Energy, Vestas and Nordex have all suffered losses as a result of how the wind industry’s market has been designed. of electricity from renewableenergy sources by 2030.
Some might see Germany as a climate leader already with its huge focus on building clean renewableenergy capacity through its ‘energiwende ’ flagship initiative. While Germany has had a huge focus on renewableenergy this has done little to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. In Germany, fossil fuels are king.
In the ever-evolving world of renewableenergy, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) emerged as a piece of legislation aimed at accelerating the adoption of clean energy practices have become a point of contention among political parties.

Advocates of renewableenergy have argued since the 1970s that the variable, weather-dependent nature of sunlight and wind is a modest obstacle at best to relying on 100 percent renewables. Some have argued that weather-dependent energies would, paradoxically, make electricity even more reliable.

Besides an ambitious national implementation of the recast RenewableEnergy Directive with focus on hydrogen, several national energy market rules shall be evaluated and changed ( p. In particular shall the production of `green´hydrogen be exempted from the renewableenergy levy. 7 national hydrogen strategy ).
Solar PV Project in Cuba (Photo credit: IRENA ) Today, the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) jointly published a new report titled Building a Cleaner, More Resilient Energy System in Cuba: Opportunities and Challenges. policy also has a significant impact on Cuba’s energy sector.
With the clean energy transition already under way, the US electricity mix is set to continue changing this year. Solar power is expected to make up about half of all additions of US electric generating capacity in 2023, according to data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). I’ll start off with the good.
CCS is a multi-billion dollar boondoggle that doesn’t come close to the hype, has significant safety risks, and is a substantial distraction from real climate solutions, such as building more renewableenergy, increasing electricity transmission infrastructure, and developing and using storage technology. Want proof?
But with the recent influx of government incentives for hydrogen production, new and improving production and storage technologies, and greater political will than ever before, H 2 ’s reputation is gaining favor. All this is not to say there is no place for hydrogen in a clean energy future.
But since his election five years ago, Macron has aggressively been expanding renewableenergy capacity, such as solar and wind. Ahead of the second round of voting on the 24th of April polls, are showing that Macron is narrowly ahead of Le Pen but that the contest promises to be tight.
Basically, I go back to my freshman year geopolitics class from college and the professor who really got us thinking about political geography, but the layers of geography. Political geography of borders and so on, in a complex interplay. Then there’s politics, civil wars, conflicts and so forth. To decarbonize industries.
In addition, he ran the State Energy Office and was charged with coordination of renewableenergy and energy efficiency issues. Witmer of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, focusing on electric, natural gas and water issues, as well as cybersecurity and the impact of environmental regulation on energy markets.
Mr. Minott holds two degrees in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. He has publicly called for investments in clean energy, green technologies, and environmental research. Nelson has been supportive of municipal efforts to transition local government facilities to 100% clean and renewableenergy.
Although politics is a new world for her, she has been involved in a number of different capacities for some time. For Ana Lia Rojas, executive director of the Chilean Association of RenewableEnergies (ACERA), Huepe’s immediate challenge as minister will be to confront the country’s stretched electricity system.
On June 30, 2022, the State of California joined the State of New York in adopting legislation that allows state authorities to bypass local laws in permitting large-scale renewableenergy projects. Several studies conclude that CEQA is decidedly not a primary driver of California’s housing/infrastructure backlogs and that political barriers, labor and materials costs, and exclusionary zoning are the real culprits. Likewise, even today’s “green” infrastructure projects still risk turning overburdened communities into sacrifice zones.
It followed Musk’s announcement earlier this month that his company would no longer accept Bitcoin in payment for its electric cars, due to the fossil fuels needed to create the digital currency. These computers use a lot of electricity , which is often generated by fossil fuels. The process uses a lot of energy.
