What Is Water Use, Anyway?

Legal Planet

What Is Agricultural Use? We all know the story, and the percentages: of water used by human beings in California (i.e. not going to environmental uses), agriculture uses a whopping 80%. So it makes little sense to call on urban users to conserve, so the story goes, until ag goes first. Certainly nonprofits like Food and Water Watch think so: As drought and climate change continue to wreak havoc on California’s water supply, an environmental advocacy group is calling on the state to limit the c

Does Environmental Review of Projects Needed for a Net-Zero Economy Lead to a Death By a Thousand Cuts?

Law and Environment

Earlier this week, the decision in Bartell Ranch v. McCullough generally supported the Bureau of Land Management’s review under NEPA and related statutes of a lithium mine near Thacker Pass, Nevada. If approved, Thacker Pass would be the largest lithium mine in the United States. The decision and the entire review of the mine are important, given how controversial large mining projects can be and how important lithium and other minerals are to building a zero-emission economy.

Can Solar, Storage and Efficiency Help Us Survive Winters Like This?

Union of Concerned Scientists

Winter storms, which are now raging across the country, are a stark reminder of how important it is for people to prepare for extreme weather, and how catastrophic things can get if they don’t. In 2021, Winter Storm Uri killed at least 246 Texans. Eight percent of those deaths were attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. Without electricity or heat, some people apparently turned to portable generators, which can fill a home with carbon monoxide exhaust.
