(1) Is it due to a reduced heat transport of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)? (2) Or is it simply due to the influx of cold meltwater as the Greenland Ice Sheet is losing ice? The latter is often suggested.

Hurricane season just ended on November 30. When you think about it, the Hanukkah story is, in a funny way, about a miraculous increase in energy efficiency. An energy resource (olive oil) that was supposed to supply only enough energy for one night’s worth of light was able to supply light for eight nights. US ratepayers very likely will pay even more for electricity and heating this winter compared to the already-expensive winter of 2021-2022. These higher costs are being driven by a major overreliance on natural gas, which has sharply spiked in price and is currently the dominant fuel source in the US for both home heating and electricity generation.

Last year, the California Legislature enacted SB 9 , which required local governments to allow duplexes (and with ADUs, sometimes triplexes and quadraplexes) in single-family zones. Housing advocates rejoiced, and NIMBYs screamed that it was the end of the world. Now the Terner Center has a report on discussions with developers revealing that we still have quite a long way to go to make the law work as intended.

On December 5, 2022, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California focused the power of a stadium-sized laser at a target no larger than a thimble, vaporizing it within a few billionths of a second. Climate justice research can help inform these conversations. New research that I led as part of my PhD dissertation, which was just published in Earth’s Future , digs deep into the topic of sea level rise and climate justice.

The International Energy Agency has released its 2022 Coal analysis and forecast. It is sobering. By the time 2022 is over, world-wide coal consumption will have exceeded 8 billons tonnes for the first time. In other words, 2022 was a record year for coal. It is true that demand was largely flat compared to 2021 and there were some extraordinary reasons – such as a war in Ukraine – for even the moderate increase.

It was a cold November day in Boston, and I rushed from a conference on public health to tour Eastie Farm. Founded in 2015 on a single lot in East Boston, this urban farm has expanded to seven sites and is working to build climate adaptation and mitigation into urban farming, while offering education , green job training , green space , community gathering space , and affordable locally and regionally grown food.

The grid energy storage industry represents a much smaller fraction of the lithium-ion battery market than electric vehicles, but it too has a responsibility to ensure batteries are responsibly and sustainably produced and then productively recirculated at end-of-life.
