Ending the use of fossil fuels to heat homes and buildings is a key challenge for cities hoping to achieve net-zero emissions. Nowhere is that more evident than in Philadelphia, where technical and financial hurdles and a reluctant gas company stand in the way of decarbonization. Read more on E360 ?.
As I examined the map and zoomed in closer to the Philadelphia region, it was obvious. There was a big empty place on the map that mostly outlined Philly. The map I was looking at was one showing where Brood X of the 17-year cicadas (also called periodical cicadas) had been recorded in previous years and likely would appear this year. The map , generated by John Cooley, PhD, is based on more than 45 years of field work by Chris Simon and Cooley and also specimen records in museum collections inc

Quantum dots are responsible for the stunning, vibrant colours on modern TV screens, but they don’t always behave like they should. This creates headaches for device makers, who struggle to understand why some of these nanometre-scale semiconducting crystals shine much more dimly than others. A team led by scientists at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the US has now used fast electrons to determine the cause of this bad behaviour.

Some spinning binary black holes can tidally deform as they merge together – according to new calculations by Alexandre Le Tiec at the Observatory of Paris, and Marc Casals at the Brazilian Centre for Research in Physics. The duo has shown that supermassive black holes will tidally bulge as stellar-mass bodies spiral into them. The results offer new guidance for future measurements of the gravitational waves emitted by such black hole mergers.

Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion (DEJI) policies, programs, and initiatives are critically important as we move forward with public and private sector climate and sustainability goals and plans. Underserved and socially, economically, and racially disadvantaged communities bear the burden of pollution, higher energy costs, limited resources, and limited investments in the clean energy and transportation sectors.

There is a lot of “buzz” this spring about periodical cicadas, using scary terms like “billions” and “invasion.” But these are insects that have always occurred here, at least for hundreds of thousands of years, and are one of our special natural phenomenon. Each individual cicada is older than nearly all children alive in Philadelphia right now – yes, an insect that is 17 years old!
Proton therapy is an advanced cancer treatment technique that delivers highly targeted dose to the tumour while sparing surrounding normal tissue, enabled by the finite range of the proton beam. This precision targeting, however, is compromised by tumour motion or anatomical changes throughout a course of treatment. The absence of fast imaging tools to localize moving targets during dose delivery is a fundamental barrier to exploiting the full potential of proton therapy.

If we consider a home in an undeveloped region with no access to the electricity grid, solar panels are worth of million smiles with a sense of development and upbringing. For developed regions, solar panels are a sign of positive climate action and sustainability. But still! Are Solar Panels Worth It? The demand for energy everywhere on the planet is rising from the time humans started using wood fuel as an energy source for many purposes.
When will we start to see the 17-year cicadas emerging from underground in the Philadelphia region? In order to achieve the state’s goals of carbon neutrality by 2045 and avoid the worst impacts of climate change, decarbonizing this sector is essential.
Complex quantum operations obey a “speed limit” of around 17 millimetres per second, say researchers led by physicists at the University of Bonn in Germany. The team obtained this result by working out how quickly they could transport an atom between two points while still preserving the information contained in its quantum state. The experiment, which required the team to transport the atom in a series of accelerating and decelerating sequences, could help optimize speed and accuracy in applica

African elephants are known to recognize groups of humans, to test electric fences with their tusks to avoid injury, and (of course) can remember paths to resources passed down to them decades earlier. But, can elephants cooperate to solve a puzzle? How good are they at understanding themselves and their place in the savannah? What does an elephant really know?
