I had the pleasure of moderating a panel on ocean justice at Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW). This year’s CHOW convening was especially important as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of a powerful package of legislative changes that improved how we protect our ocean, coasts and lakes.

The focus was clear: climate action, transitioning to cleaner energy, advancing SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) and preparing for COP28 (the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference). Our team from OceanConservancy was right in the mix, meeting with governments and engaging in more than 30 events in just five days.
After a two-year delay due to the pandemic, the United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference returned to an in-person event this June. Thousands of people from around the world gathered in Lisbon, Portugal, to discuss the biggest challenges facing our ocean and how best to work together to achieve SustainableDevelopment Goal 14: Life Below Water.
For example, researchers at the Union of Concerned Scientists have directly linked fossil fuel producers’ Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions to increases in ocean acidification , global temperature, sea level rise and North American wildfires. That also means they play the largest role in climate-related environmental changes.

Clean ocean energy solutions are critical to reducing emissions and averting the climate crisis. Climate change is the single greatest threat our ocean faces. It puts the wildlife and communities that depend on the ocean at risk through impacts like ocean acidification, sea level rise and temperature changes.
By restoring degraded ecosystems and effectively and equitably conserving 30 to 50 per cent of Earth’s land, freshwater and ocean habitats, society can benefit from nature’s capacity to absorb and store carbon, and we can accelerate progress towards sustainabledevelopment, but adequate finance and political support are essential.”.
