I got involved with making sure my school was recycling, coordinating EarthDay rallies, helping create community gardens, and other things. Riker’s Island, for example, was built on top of toxic waste. Looking back, I did not think about environmental justice—I didn’t even know that term until college.

The ClearWater Conservancy celebrated EarthDay weekend on April 23 alongside 451 community volunteers at its 26th Annual Watershed Cleanup Day. Since 1997, Watershed Cleanup Day volunteers have removed over 6.12 million pounds of waste from local streams, roadways, sinkholes, and illegal dumpsites.
So, we worked with experts to develop a plan to fix the plastic waste problem. We did this because bans were easier for people to understand and made it clearer to the plastics industry the consequences of their continued efforts to block progress to fix the entire waste system. That is the hope that promises a better future.
