In addition, ozone depletion higher up in the stratosphere has caused a cooling high up in the atmosphere. This means more coastal erosion, increases the risk of coastal inundation and makes storm surges a bigger threat for coastal settlements. This is likely an effect of man-made climate change.

Littoral rainforest is a type of forest that grows along the beachfront, providing habitat for native flora and fauna and acting as an important buffer to coastal erosion and wind damage. Local community group ‘Friends of Federation Walk’ have been involved in protecting The Spit’s coastal reserve for more than 20 years.
