After spending a week in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, I’m now gearing up to attend the 29 th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the Framework Convention on ClimateChange in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11-22.
This important gathering, known as COP29 (which stands for the ‘Conference of the Parties’), is the 29th annual United Nations climate negotiations since the establishment of the United Nations Framework Convention on ClimateChange in 1995. to support countries needing help with climate adaptation and emission reduction.
Deadly heatwaves, extreme drought, food and water shortages, catastrophic flooding, rapidly intensifying tropical storms, raging wildfires—around the world, climatechange is exacerbating extreme conditions and their harsh toll on people and ecosystems. The fearsome toll of climate impacts is already clear, leading U.N.
Reforming the international multilateral lending architecture to be fairer and more aligned with climate and sustainabledevelopment objectives is also critical. Now, what’s desperately needed are new funding commitments from countries to help meet the significant and growing needs as the climate crisis worsens.
