I followed with great interest the launch of the sixth assessment report Working Group 1 (The Physical Science Basis) from the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC) on August 9th. The cause of our changingclimate is the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations that we have released into the air.
As atmospheric concentrations of CFC-11 drop, the global ocean should become a source of the chemical by the middle of next century, a new MIT study predicts. The world’s oceans are a vast repository... The post Oceans may start emitting ozone-depleting CFCs appeared first on successful GREEN.
The first climatechange presentation I saw was back in the 1970s when I was working for the National Weather Service. Murray Mitchell, was the top climate scientist for NWS. While that got the bulk of the publicity, Dr. Mitchell assured us that the warming of the climate would be the biggest problem in the future.
In 27 years of previous climate conferences, there was no central discussion of health and the impacts of climatechange. To me, environmental law and climate policy are about people, protecting people, and advocating alongside those disproportionately affected by climatechange. More than ever before.
Today, climatechange is the central, though by no means the only, concern in environmental law. I found only one relevant reference using the term “climatechange” before 1985. In one sentence of a 1975 article, John Barton referred to “climatechange” as a potentially severe long-term problem.
Meanwhile, note that the factors listed above involve the whole Earth system: the oceans, the cryosphere, the atmosphere, the solid earth and lithosphere, and a full range of scales, from the city block and shoreline, to ice dynamics that change over kilometers, to GRD footprints, to the whole global ocean. 2020) or Sadai et al.
As deeply troubling reports continue to come in about ocean waters hitting historic hot temperatures, sectors like global shipping are trying to understand the consequences of a warmer ocean and what can be done to stop the heating. So, we’re seeing the ocean heat up, lose oxygen and get bigger. as a national policy leader.
The weighting varies a little between land and ocean, and as a function of topography or surface type (some model-observation comparisons take this into account, but a global uniform weighting is often good enough). The upward trends differ slightly for sure, but they are all recognizably describing the same climatechange.
In the last few months he has given two interviews in which he goes into to detail about what he describes as a ‘missing element’ in climate science and what he imagines the consequences are for climatechange. Clauser however takes that number, removes 80 and 20 W/m 2 for atmospheric absorption by ozone (!!)
Levels of Ground-level Ozone Pollution Can Increase in Summer. As ground-level ozone requires the presence of sunlight to form, high heat and sunny weather can function to increase concentrations of this particular pollutant. Elevated ground-level ozone may also severely reduce crop yields during their primary growing season.
volume mixing ratio), together with a number of trace gases, such as argon (0.93% volume mixing ratio), helium, radiatively active greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (0.035% volume mixing ratio), and ozone. Climate in a wider sense is the state, including a statistical description, of the climate system. See, Weather.
Whereas the science—synthesized in recent assessments and special reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (‘IPCC’)—emphasizes the deep interlinkages between issues of climatechange, marine and terrestrial biodiversity loss, and ocean degradation, the international legal response is fragmented and uncoordinated.
Motor vehicle exhaust is one big source of ground-level ozone or smog, fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. Because harmful emissions can make their way into the ground and water systems, these pollutants also contribute to ocean acidification, agricultural troubles and ecological destruction.
Climatology, or sometimes known as climate science, is the study of the Earth's weather patterns and the systems that cause them. Natural Variables That Influence Our Climate. They are usually predictable, but the increasing effects of climatechange can sometimes push them back to a little later. What Climatology Is.
Acidification : Reducing the pH rating of a substance making it more acidic in nature, for example, increased carbon emissions lead to the oceans absorbing more of it, increasing acidification and damaging ecology such as coral bleaching.
