Done right, a transformative shift to clean energy can also be a tremendous boon to community well-being, public health, and the economy.

All across the country, coal- and gas-fired power plants are still running, still polluting, and still showing signs of staying relentlessly online. Through the Clean Air Act , and as affirmed—and reaffirmed—through multiple legal sagas, EPA is statutorily obligated to address carbon pollution from fossil fuel-fired power plants.

Keeping the NO x from adding to the pollution burden of the surrounding community would require changes in operation or pollution controls. A plant cofiring with 30% hydrogen, for example, could generate around 17% more NO x than the plant being fueled with only gas. More water use Hydrogen production consumes water.

But these outcomes would be ruinous for everyone else, failing to deliver climate benefits, propping up extraordinarily harmful and unjust systems instead of addressing their root cause, and subsidizing hydrogen production infrastructure completely at odds with that demanded by our clean energy future.
