Theres been a lot of talk about nuclearpower recently. Plant owners have been making plans to restart their retired nuclearpower plants, Google signed the first corporate deal to purchase energy from small modular nuclear reactors, and the US pledged to triple its nuclear generating capacity by 2050.
This demonstration of the connections between people and systems, and the need for collective solutions to complicated problems, came to mind when I read about an idea for a different real estate host technology: nuclearpower plant owners seeking to bring large data centers to co-locate on their land. Modernize, or bypass, the grid?
Codifying a floor for renewables in state law is helpful, but cleanenergy advocates must keep pushing utilities to move more quickly to incorporate higher levels of renewables not only to cut emissions faster, but also because renewables are the most cost-effective resources for ratepayers. What Still Needs to be Done?
Introduction One of the main messages coming out of the recent COP28 meetings in the UAE concerns the role that nuclearpower can play in the future of cleanenergy development around the world. The hope is that this encourages international financial institutions to include nuclearenergy in loans for energy projects.
Global spending on cleanenergy technologies and infrastructure is on track to hit $2 trillion in 2024. Much of this funding is slated to be put toward renewables, electric vehicles, low-emission fuels, storage solutions, nuclearpower and other green technology. Read the full story at ESG Dive.
Exus chose to repower the facility thanks to the cleanenergy plan’s 30% production tax credits for American wind power. Click Here to learn about more investments in cleanenergy in Pennsylvania. billion in new cleanenergy investments in Pennsylvania supporting 2,881 new jobs. Read more here.
Last week, on Monday November 14, as part of its Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review , the Ontario government officially announced it would be developing a voluntary cleanenergy credit (CEC) registry. Now, the Ontario government is crafting an official CleanEnergy Credit system that will presumably require transparency.
People across the country are trying to square the benefits that technology can bring with the real and growing impacts on the environment and consumers, said Ellie Kerns , Climate and CleanEnergy Advocate with the PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center. Click Here to read the report.
Although its track record has some complexities, this timeline of German actions shows just its early and sustained attention to cleanenergy policy: 1990. Renewable Energy Act sets fixed feed-in tariffs and gives renewables priority on the grid. Germany has dragged its feet on EVs because of its powerful car industry.
For any major federal action that affects the environment, such as building an interstate highway or licensing a nuclearpower plant, NEPA requires relevant agencies … Continue reading Will faster federal reviews speed up the cleanenergy shift?
These models are essentially designed to determine what resources need to be added to the grid to meet certain goals, such as cleanenergy or emissions reduction goals. Capacity expansion modeling helps determine how many clean resources, such as solar and wind, need to be added to the grid to meet cleanenergy goals.
Change #1: 100% cleanenergy goals have spread At the beginning of 2018, the only state in the country with a 100% clean or renewable energy goal was Hawaii. Now, 22 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have 100% cleanenergy goals on the books. The list goes on, but you get the point.
And what happens is, you've mentioned this, that 95% of the [proposed] energy [facilities], the new coming online in the [JPM] queue, is wind and solar and that means only 5% is natural gas, or coal, or nuclear or whatever. So it seems to me, and I love it when people say, oh, well by 2035 we're going to have totally cleanenergy.
It’s worth delving into because it has some important implications for our cleanenergy future. US Electricity Generation Wind and solar lead the way in decarbonizing the power sector to meet near-term climate targets. Decarbonizing the power sector also plays a critical long-term role by replacing fossil fuels in other sectors.
This reflects the proceeds expected to come from Pennsylvania electricity customers. -- 30 percent to support energy efficiency projects that reduce air pollution in Pennsylvania, invest in new job-creating cleanenergy projects, and support low-income energy consumers with their energy bills through a year-round LIHEAP program.
In consideration of this growing demand comes the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Nuclear for CleanEnergy (ADVANCE) Act of 2024 , an amendment included in the House approved version of S. advanced nuclearpower technologies and fuels, with consideration of U.S. 870, the Fire Grants and Safety Act.
The grid might not meet that demand Electricity for data centers comes from the grid, and by extension, the mix of power plants that supply the grid. New data center proposals can be of the scale of nuclearpower plants and some even seek to connect directly to existing nuclear plants.

In the rush to integrate artificial intelligence into the economy, fast-moving information technology companies are running into a problem: slow-moving electric utilities. In more ways than one, the electricity supply so vital to running a data center simply doesnt respond the way Silicon Valley and big investors want.

Relief can only come from our utilities diversifying their energy mix more with cheaper energy sources. In today's energy market, solar, wind, and nuclearpower — which are virtually immune from overseas influence — offer lower and more price stable electricity generation. It's produced here and it stays here.
“We don’t want to see high bills like this again,” he said of the country’s current energy costs. It’s time for a cleanenergy reset. That is why we are fully committing to nuclearpower in the UK, backing a new generation of small modular reactors.” The latest estimate is that it will cost £32 billion.
This summer, Newsom managed to get a sweeping energy budget bill passed that gives a state agency the authority to buy electricity from existing fossil fuel power plants and build new emergency or temporary power plants as well. All that being said, it’s still 2022 and September is upon us.
That means that any renewable energy generation will supply a larger portion of demand. That lower-than-expected electricity demand also makes spring (and the other “shoulder” season, fall) the go-to seasons for fossil fuel and nuclearpower plants to go offline for scheduled maintenance—or refueling, in the case of the nuclear plants.
The German example Germany, the economic and industrial powerhouse in Europe in 2023, decided, for ideological and emotional reasons, to wean itself off nuclearpower , even though the low-carbon baseload energy source was key to stability and economic output. But this did not happen.
Those findings might surprise physicists, who will be aware that the energy density of nuclear fission is so high that just a fingertip of uranium has an energy equivalent of 5000 barrels of oil. In it, we emphasize that nuclear is not only a low-carbon source of energy, but is also widely available, scalable and deployable.
In Illinois last week, a coalition of unions and environmentalists scored a major victory with a law providing for a miniature Green New Deal: billions invested in cleanenergy, a commitment to decarbonizing, solid labor standards, and embrace of nuclearpower. Read more →
This sparked a lot of concerns because it was just a few months after the March 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan. The public was thankfully not harmed by the Nebraska incident, but this was unfortunately not an isolated incident in terms of flood risks posed to the US nuclearpower fleet.

Among the main reasons to choose a career in renewables, Davies cites the growth that the sector is experiencing due to the increased focus on climate change and demand for cleanenergy. Energy touches everyone,” she says, “so being part of providing it in a responsible way really gets me going when I get up in the morning.”.
On December 21, the Conservative Energy Network released a new poll showing 73 percent of all voters would be more likely to support a Republican candidate who embraces new technologies and innovation in addressing climate change and cleanenergy issues. The Pennsylvania Conservative Energy Forum is part of the CEN network.

The country’s struggle to reduce its reliance on coal was significantly helped by the purely ideological and populist decision to phase out all its nuclearpower stations by 2022 (initially following the Fukushima accident in 2011 in Japan) . They also get renewable energy from other European neighbours, mainly Denmark.
