In fact, pursuing more climate-forward energy policies can be an opportunity to do right by our neighbors working in Pennsylvanias oil and gas fields. There is a path in Pennsylvania where cleanenergy advocates and the traditional oil and gas industry can meet: geothermal energy.
Just how bad is fossil “natural” gas? And, as it turns out, the infrastructure used to produce, store, distribute, transmit, and burn gas leaks like a sieve , making gas as bad as coal for the climate. VY: Cleanenergy sources will be absolutely pivotal for an equitable and reliable grid.
5060 ), titled An Act Driving CleanEnergy and Offshore Wind, into law on Thursday August 11, 2022. DPU is instructed to study how to make it easier for communities to adopt geothermal heating and cooling systems. Governor Baker signed the climate bill ( H.5060 4524) and the Senate’s proposed omnibus climate bill (S.2819).
Despite the cleanenergy transition that is well underway in the United States, methane gas, or naturalgas, remains the largest source of U.S. Further, gas plants that require cooling , like gas steam and combined cycle plants, are cooled less efficiently in high temperatures.
The production and transportation of oil and gas also cause significant environmental impacts, as does the use of enormous amounts of water for cooling the generators. Many of these ideas center around forcing the plants to combine their coal with naturalgas or biomass in order to reduce emissions.
To improve the lives of all Chicagoans, the plan prioritizes environmental justice, household savings, public health, and cleanenergy. Energy burden , a household’s heating and electric expenses as a percentage of income, is a major issue for Illinois low-income families, who on average spend 13 percent of their income on energy.
This is mainly a result of coal generation being replaced by naturalgas generation (and to a smaller extent renewable energy sources like wind and solar) and energy efficiency improvements, due in part to Act 129 [utility energy efficiency program].
I’m not going into the pros and cons of these various measures, but suffice it to say that each one is problematic in its own way, and decisionmakers clearly need more options as the grid transitions from fossil fuels to renewable and cleanenergy sources. All that being said, it’s still 2022 and September is upon us.
In an attempt to expand its “natural” gas infrastructure across Ontario, Enbridge Gas is telling residents that gas is the cheapest way to heat their homes. Today, we filed a complaint with the Competition Bureau over Enbridge Gas’ deceptive marketing. But Enbridge Gas does not want you to know that.
Despite their concerns over nuclear waste, tribal leaders are celebrating a $46 million grant from Minnesota’s Renewable Development Fund, which will allow them to draft a new cleanenergy plan based on solar and geothermal energy. The EPA raises concerns over the climate impact of a proposed Wisconsin naturalgas plant.
Underground pipes and wells tap geothermal energy to heat and cool a neighborhood. By Phil McKenna BOSTONThree climate activists and three gas utility executives walk into a room. Next stop, the world.

NaturalGas Is An Intermittent Generator Rep. Craig Williams (R-Delaware) noted the PUC’s testimony said naturalgas provides 53% of elected generation in Pennsylvania in 2021, nuclear power 33%, coal just 12% and renewables and other sources the remainder. The issues were actually at the wellhead. “It
On December 12, the Ohio River Valley Institute released a new report showing an energy decarbonizing strategy based on zero emissions resources, energy efficiency and increased electrification is 13 percent less costly than a strategy based on hydrogen/naturalgas and carbon capture in 10-county Southwest Pennsylvania area.

Now, if you thought I was going to say that cleanenergy technologies aren’t capable of providing a reliable electricity supply, you’re way off track. A diverse portfolio of clean resources is quite literally the key to a reliable power grid. But what about fossil fuel resources, especially naturalgas power plants ?
We are talking about steel plants, cement plants, refineries, power plants (coal and naturalgas fired), and other large manufacturing operations that use a lot of energy. The issue is about what the transition to clean fuels and manufacturing looks like and how long it will take.
The complaint , filed by Environmental Defence, the Ontario Clean Air Alliance , the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment and a number of affected residents , calls out Enbridge for claiming that gas is the most cost effective way for Ontarians to heat their homes, when heat pumps are in fact the least expensive option.
The organizations assert the company is falsely claiming that gas is the most cost-effective way to heat homes. In reality, a typical customer in a gas expansion area could spend over $10,000 more if they choose to use gas instead of installing a high-efficiency electric heat pump (over the lifetime of the equipment).

For more than 30 years, EPA’s ENERGY STAR program has supported the transition to a cleanenergy economy by fostering innovation, jobs, and economic development, while protecting public health.
Wind and solar are now the cheapest forms of new power generation in most of the world, and are coming at very low costs here in Canada too , out-competing naturalgas. Improve Energy Storage. The Regulation’s proposed criteria for gaseous fossil fuels (which includes both conventional naturalgas, and synthetic gas derived from coal gasification) allow investment in their consumption without restriction in function, scale, or time period, as long as greenhouse gas emissions are no higher than 100 gCO2eq/kWh (see §4.29-31

Unfortunately, the very source of the TVA’s grid failure during Winter Storm Elliott in the winter of 2022 is the same source of energy that the TVA is now doubling down on : gas. Note: “Naturalgas” is an industry misnomer; UCS considers methane, fossil gas, and gas to be much more appropriate terms for this energy source.)
Fossil-fueled power is expensive Even if you put health and environmental costs aside—which you shouldn’t, and I’ll get to those in a second—fossil-fueled power just doesn’t make economic sense given more affordable energy sources.
Compared to funding for fossil fuels, cleanenergy stimulus creates nearly three times as many jobs for equivalent investments. Distort the energy market : Subsidies distort markets, favouring oil and gas over renewable energy. Lastly, fossil fuels come with a giant opportunity cost.
