The legislation committed nearly $400 billion to support, among other things, wind and solarpower, battery storage, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technologies that will make a significant dent in US heat-trapping emissions. It also will save US consumers money because they will spend less on fossil fuels.
The end of every year is a great time for taking stock of what the year has broughtincluding in terms of clean energy in the power sector. Heres a taste, from US projects, technologies, electrons, and investment, to happenings in the world as a whole.
Carbon-reduction plans, if not well designed, can worsen water scarcity and pollution. Plans to reduce carbonemissions should take water into account. Some low-carbon energy options require significant amounts of water. But other low-carbontechnologies do not tread as lightly. Carl Ganter/Circle of Blue.
The majority 6–3 decision sharply curtails the EPA’s authority to set standards based on a broad range of flexible options to cut carbonemissions from the power sector—options such as replacing polluting fossil fuels with cheap and widely available wind and solarpower coupled with battery storage.
Climate educators from SEWA explaining solarpower for salt gathering (L) and skylights that cool the interior of a house (R). Terms such as global warming and carbonemissions must be converted into everyday language. This group of women learns about specific adaptation technologies.
These investments will help accommodate accelerating amounts of low-cost renewable energy like wind and solarpower, laying the groundwork for a cleaner, cheaper grid. Minnesota’s current goal is to reduce statewide carbonemissions 30 percent by 2025 compared to 2005 levels and 80 percent by 2050.
Earlier this year, the MPSC approved a settlement agreement on Consumers Energy’s integrated resource plan that commits the company to retire all its remaining coal-fired power plants by 2025, construct no new fossil gas infrastructure, and build large amounts of new solarpower between now and 2040.
As port throughput continues to grow, energy consumption is also on the rise, and some ports are struggling with the technology and policy involved, leading to slow progress in achieving zero-carbon goals. Some lack sufficient space or have outdated existing equipment that prevents the effective installation of solarpower.
The 45Y and 48E credits are foundational to that effort , enabling the widespread deployment of clean electricity resources to drive down carbonemissions in the power sector—and in so doing, unlocking the ability of the power sector to decarbonize vast swaths of the rest of the economy.
The IRA gave us effective tools for cleaning up the power sector through dedicated support for the rapid and widescale deployment of renewable resources and the technologies that support them. EPA ruling, EPA can still establish rigorous carbonemissions standards. So what follows from that obligation?
for Ontario to phase out polluting gas-powered electricity and produce all of its power using carbon-free sources. Take Action: Tell Ontario to phase out polluting gas power. Here are the measures that would lead Ontario to a fully clean electricity grid: Increase Wind and SolarPower.
Student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University There is a renewable energy revolution happening all over the world: costs for renewable energy have dropped significantly in the last 10 years and the world is starting to adopt the technology at a very fast pace. per watt [6], so the 25 watts would cost $85.50.
However, current desalination systems can be expensive and energy hungry, producing significant carbonemissions. Climate change is also driving demand for renewable energy, like solarpower. Indeed, there are now around 16,000 desalination plants around the world producing about 95?million Efficiency trade-off.
162 gigawatts (GW) or 62 per cent of total renewable power generation added last year had lower costs than the cheapest new fossil fuel option. Of the different renewable energy technologies concentrating solarpower (CSP) fell by 16 per cent, onshore wind by 13 per cent, offshore wind by 9 per cent and solar PV by 7 per cent.
By Leigh Hartman When Son Nguyen lived in the US, he saw rapidly advancing electric vehicle technology and heard stories from back in Vietnam about air pollution. The company sells electric motorbikes in Danang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is exploring the reuse of electric batteries and how to power its factory with green energy.
The Tokyo Olympics will be powered by a fuel with ambition – hydrogen. The Olympic village will be powered by hydrogen made at a solarpower plant in the exclusion zone created after the Fukushima nuclear accident a decade ago. The Olympic flame is already burning it. Others are much more sceptical. “It
Yang Fuqiang thinks it is unreasonable to make energy-producing provinces such as Inner Mongolia solely responsible for cutting carbonemissions. If it benefits, it has to help cut carbon. Yet the industry still causes pollution and carbonemissions. Money is not the issue, it’s the return.”.
The decision to ditch coal was the biggest single action of its time to cut carbonemissions in North America. That means carbonemissions from electricity in Ontario will be rising back up again after years of decline. Ontario Electricity Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions Historical and Forecast.

Two-way charging could give vehicles like these the potential to stabilise power supplies by discharging stored electricity back to the grid. Photo credit: Wang Xi / Alamy. In January, China’s biggest trial of two-way charging took place in Wuxi, Jiangsu.

Commercial operators work on many farms, meaning that adoption of technology and increased knowledge impact large amounts of acreage. NAME provided a vast two-day educational platform geared toward efficient nutrient utilization.
Acknowledging that the United States is a leading contributor to carbonemissions, the Biden administration has committed to cutting US emissions 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. EIA also projects US battery storage capacity to more than double in 2023.
percent of the grid’s power. In his recent testimony to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, the coauthor of Princeton University’s Net-Zero America study noted that just because an energy technology is not reliable does not mean that it has no role in a reliable system. [8] GW from its 4.9
Two sturdy and growing sources of renewable energy, wind turbines and solarpower, use negligible amounts of water. But other low-carbontechnologies do not tread as lightly. Then there are more difficult maneuvers like trapping carbonemissions from power plants or pulling carbon directly from the air.
19] France spends just over half as much per kilowatt-hour for electricity that produces one-tenth of the carbonemissions of German electricity. Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed new power plant carbon pollution standards that, if strengthened, would go a long way to help meet the Biden administration’s goal of slashing carbonemissions in half from 2005 levels by the end of this decade. Last year, wind generated 10.2 Not even close.
The new global record in the generation of renewable energy was powered primarily by solar and wind. Solarpower has been the fastest growing source of electricity in the world for 19 years in a row according to Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2024. percent of the globe’s electricity in 2015, solar now produces 5.5
The committee followed up that hearing —during which the executives disingenuously denied funding such a campaign—with another hearing on February 8 focusing on the oil companies’ inadequate plans to cut their carbonemissions.
