Even casual followers of energy and climate issues have probably heard about the alleged wonders of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). The failure of these projects to come in on time and under budget undermines arguments that modern nuclearpower plants can overcome the problems that have plagued the nuclear industry in the past.
The Federal Cabinet adopts its first climate target, a 25-30% cut in carbonemissions by 2005 under 1987 levels. Note: the estimates of 1990 emissions that I found are not entirely consistent, with one estimate closer to 1.2 Germany decides to phase out nuclearpower, complicating efforts to decarbonize the power sector.
With economic growth have come carbonemissions. As of 2016, half of its total emissions are from the power sector, with 20% from industry and 15% from transportation, and. According to the Energy Information Agency , South Korea’s power sector is heavily reliant on fossil fuels.
EPA regulation of greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act (CAA) A. Standards for carbon and methane emissions from new sources Permitting requirements for carbonemissions from new stationary sources of major sources of existing pollutants. Standards for emissions from new vehicles.
However, the bill’s definition of what constitutes clean energy includes nuclearpower (which doesn’t emit carbon but isn’t “clean”) and fossil gas power plants that capture and store at least 90 percent of their carbonemissions.
All told, they represent 56 percent of the US population, generate 62 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, and are responsible for 43 percent of the country’s annual carbonemissions. Our 100-percent RES scenario triggers a significant decline in fossil fuel use.
The grid might not meet that demand Electricity for data centers comes from the grid, and by extension, the mix of power plants that supply the grid. New data center proposals can be of the scale of nuclearpower plants and some even seek to connect directly to existing nuclear plants.

First up I look at some of the latest developments in energy research – wind, solar, nuclear and energy storage. I’m joined by Daniel Kammen from the University of California, Berkeley, in the US, whose research interests span renewable energy, nuclearpower and public policy.
The Grohnde plant is one of the German nuclearpower plants which is due to shut down at the end of 2021. A recent report has shed light on the scale of the climate cost of Germany decommissioning its nuclearpower plants. Photo credit: Preussen Elektra. By Anders Lorenzen.
Ontario Power Generation has been quietly selling off Clean Energy Credits from its hydro and nuclearpower to businesses in the United States since about 2013. Ontario businesses that are attempting to lower their carbon footprint can no longer count their electricity use as having low emissions.
In 1978, during a phase of the Cold War when relationships between East and West began to relax, the United States and 4 other nuclearpowers (China, France, the Soviet Union and the UK) made unilateral declarations granting security assurances to non-nuclear- weapon states. By Christoph Schwarte* .
In addition, PRESS ensures the continuity of our existing clean energy nuclear fleet by creating a mechanism for those facilities to receive support in the event they are threatened with closure.
clean hydrogen industry that creates good-paying jobs, while also reducing carbonemissions. The Treasury Department’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) provides definitions of key terms in the statute, including lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, qualified clean hydrogen, and qualified clean hydrogen production facility.
The amount that the Senate has proposed diverting from the RGGI fund for FY 2017 is more than 80% of the total value of RGGI auction proceeds earned by New York in FY 2016 (which totaled approximately $166 million ). Clearly, the diversion of RGGI proceeds to the general budget and for workforce development is at odds with these requirements.
Japan, a long-time supporter of nuclearpower, now has serious hydrogen ambitions. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be powered by hydrogen. The Tokyo Olympics will be powered by a fuel with ambition – hydrogen. There is talk that a global “hydrogen economy” can emerge to save the climate from carbonemissions.
The decision to ditch coal was the biggest single action of its time to cut carbonemissions in North America. That means carbonemissions from electricity in Ontario will be rising back up again after years of decline. The reason given is that gas is needed to fill an upcoming drop in nuclear capacity.
In June, the Committee was scheduled to consider House Bill 1215 (Vitali-D-Delaware) that would have required hydrogen producing companies to sequester a larger portion of carbonemissions to receive a state tax credit under state Act 108, but the Committee passed over the bill. Read more here.
Quartz reports that the Land of the Morning Calm has seen its coal-burning recently increase as its nuclearpower plants faced problems and as coal supplied the necessary power. According to new findings from Climate Action Tracker , India and China are actually years ahead of their climate commitments.

Clean hydrogen production relies either on electricity, which may be generated through renewable or fossil fuel resources; or directly on fossil fuels, via steam methane reformation (SMR) or coal gasification accompanied by carbon capture, or via methane pyrolysis. Lifecycle GHG Emissions (kg CO2e/kgH20) PTC Value ($/kg H2) 2.5-4
Coal energy has the highest carbon intensity of fossil fuels, but the electricity that coal provided during the cold snap saved Texas from more widespread blackouts, and possibly more fatalities. [22] should maintain and expand its fleet of highly-reliable, carbon-free, and 94 percent efficient nuclearpower plants.
Many civil disobedience activists in the 1960s and 70s attempted to use it to justify their illegal actions in protests over foreign wars or nuclearpower, for example, but achieved little to no success. So actions taken to curtail some carbonemissions, but not all, might still suffice. in some way. reasonable.
Opponents of EPA Carbon Standards for New Coal-Fired Power Plants Filed Initial Briefs. Petitioners challenging EPA’s new source performance standards for carbonemissions from power plants filed their opening briefs in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Appalachian Hydrogen Hub The Appalachian Hydrogen Hub will leverage the region’s ample access to low-cost natural gas to produce low-cost clean hydrogen and permanently and safely store the associated carbonemissions.
It is for that reason that I have, for more than 20 years, conducted energy analysis, worked as a journalist, and advocated for renewables, coal-to-natural gas switching, and nuclearpower to reduce carbonemissions. Climate change is real and we should seek to reduce carbonemissions.
to reduce statewide electric carbonemissions by 30 percent by 2030. [1]. DEQ’s carbon regulations. Total electric energy is defined by the Va Code to mean total electric energy minus electricity produced by nuclearpower. The CEA also includes a provision for joining the. Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
4] Meanwhile, many experts see in recent trends an inevitable transition away from coal and nuclearpower plants, designed to function as baseload capacity, toward variable renewable energy sources with just-in-time natural gas back-up. gigawatts of highly-reliable, low-cost, and low-carbonpower. [49] 5] The U.S.
I further argue that, if we continue to develop in these ways, deaths from natural disasters will continue to decline, food surpluses will continue to rise, and global carbonemissions will likely peak and decline soon, preventing temperatures from rising more than three degrees centigrade over pre-industrial levels. Why else use it?
Summary Of House Bill 2277 PRESS continues all of the successful elements of the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards (AEPS) while making it more inclusive—adding nuclearpower, next generation technologies like fusion, and clean forms of natural gas for the first time.
In addition to all those benefits, solar schools projects have immense local benefits such as reducing carbonemissions and creating family sustaining jobs.” “With the savings, local governments can reduce taxes and schools can invest in more teachers. Fiedler was joined by labor, educational and environmental leaders.
