Policy drivers State leadership has been important in driving the development and adoption of clean energy for decades, and remains key to accelerating the move toward clean energy and away from fossilfuels.
Renewable generation is variable—wind and solarpower produce electricity when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining. Among many other provisions, CEJA includes carbonemission limits for coal and fossil gas plants that phase in over several years, starting in 2030.
Minnesotans are facing concurrent crises of climate change, high energy prices and inflation, and the inequitable public health impacts of fossilfuel air pollution. Renewable energy will help with all of that—but we need a grid that is designed for wind and solar instead of having to rely on expensive coal and gas plants.
This much-needed set of 18 projects will improve electricity reliability, address overloaded wires , and help unlock more lower-cost wind and solarpower to replace costly, polluting fossilfuel plants in Michigan and many other states in the Midwest (including Illinois and Minnesota ). Source: MISO.
My last post argued that EPA should immediately repeal the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan. It attempted to move away from fossilfuels and toward zero-carbon sources like solarpower to supply electricity. Here are the options going forward for regulating existing power plants.
The majority 6–3 decision sharply curtails the EPA’s authority to set standards based on a broad range of flexible options to cut carbonemissions from the power sector—options such as replacing polluting fossilfuels with cheap and widely available wind and solarpower coupled with battery storage.
Carbon-reduction plans, if not well designed, can worsen water scarcity and pollution. Plans to reduce carbonemissions should take water into account. Some low-carbon energy options require significant amounts of water. But other low-carbon technologies do not tread as lightly. Carl Ganter/Circle of Blue.
New research from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) confirms renewables are continuing to outpace fossilfuels on cost. They found that the share of renewable energy that achieved lower costs than the most competitive fossilfuel option doubled in 2020. C climate pathway.
A decade later In 2021, Steelton-Highspire School District worked with McClure Company to install a solar array large enough to offset 100 percent of its annual electricity usage. This is not only saving the school district money on its utility bills, but the array also eliminates tons of carbonemissions annually.
Multiple lines of analysis make clear that regardless of how cheap wind and solarpower get, without directly addressing pollution from coal and gas plants, the country’s clean energy transition will not happen fast enough. EPA ruling, EPA can still establish rigorous carbonemissions standards.

Weifang Port’s “zero-carbon” certification was primarily achieved by transitioning away from fossilfuel use, according to China Electric Power News (CEPN). It has built a wind power system to provide green energy for its operations and deployed hydrogen-powered vehicles to replace fossil-fuel-powered trucks.
It all comes down to the system’s ability to effectively move low-cost energy—which these days is generated by wind and solarpower—from where it originates to where it’s needed to meet customer demand. States and utilities are shifting rapidly to more renewable energy and reducing their reliance on fossilfuels.
That timing makes it a hugely important potential resource when winter hits hard and fossilfuels fail. It also makes offshore wind an important seasonal complement to the region’s abundant and growing solarpower capacity. Power everywhere. The US offshore wind map.

We all know that to successfully address climate change we need to phase out fossilfuels and switch to electric power. A s we transition our homes and vehicles to electric power, it’s imperative that the electricity sector be clean. Take Action: Tell Ontario to phase out polluting gas power.
Hydrogen may have lost the race to fuel electric cars but it looks a likely contender to replace fossilfuels in trucks, ships, planes and heavy industry. The Tokyo Olympics will be powered by a fuel with ambition – hydrogen. And it has a head start in organising imports of the fuel.
The GIANT Company will receive approximately 155 million kilowatt hours of energy per year from the long-term power purchase agreement, with that energy matched by Green-e® Energy Certified RECs sourced from renewable facilities located throughout the U.S. EPA estimates.
PWSA remains committed to its role as a responsible steward of the environment and will continue to collaborate with WPEC and other partners to make significant strides in reducing carbonemissions and fostering a greener future for generations to come. The decision to ditch coal was the biggest single action of its time to cut carbonemissions in North America. But what you probably haven’t heard is that our grid is getting dirtier again, with fossilfuels increasing in our electricity supply from burning natural gas. Ontario Energy Output by Fuel Type: 2020 .
The other is to improve the energy structure, replacing fossilfuel sources with alternatives. Yang Fuqiang thinks it is unreasonable to make energy-producing provinces such as Inner Mongolia solely responsible for cutting carbonemissions. If it benefits, it has to help cut carbon.
The Pennsylvania Climate Change Act of 2008 requires the state Department of Environmental Protection to provide the Legislature and governor every three years a report on current and projected climate change impacts, and a plan of actions to reduce carbonemissions. DEP published Pennsylvania Climate Action Plan 2021 in September.

The legislation committed nearly $400 billion to support, among other things, wind and solarpower, battery storage, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technologies that will make a significant dent in US heat-trapping emissions. It also will save US consumers money because they will spend less on fossilfuels.
A recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) study shows that it would take less than 1 percent of the land in the Lower 48—that’s an area comparable to or even smaller than the fossilfuel industry’s current footprint.
Here in New York, for example, we already have three forms of more or less direct carbon pricing. The most direct of these is imposed on certain fossilfuelpower plants by requiring them to purchase carbon dioxide emissions allowances as part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
Once completed, it is intended to supply power, on a priority basis, to the industries being set up at the Gwadar Free Zone (GFZ), a special economic zone at Gwadar port that forms part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the USD 62 billion bilateral infrastructure and connectivity project between China and Pakistan.
Few people realize that Germany has actually increased its fossilfuel combustion capacity over the 20 years of its landmark renewable energy program from 2001 to the present. 5] Jesse Jenkins, “A Plan to Future-Proof the Texas Power Grid,” New York Times , February 18, 2021. In any case, I’m skeptical that the GOP would be willing to hand the Biden administration another big climate accomplishment, despite the urgent need to cut carbonemissions. Under the settlement, the company will retire all of its coal-fired power plants by 2025 and install nearly 8,000 megawatts of solarpower by 2040.
The state-specific fact sheet, On the Road to 100 Percent Renewables for Minnesota , outlines how it could meet its electricity needs completely and equitably with renewable energy by 2035 and dramatically reduce fossilfuel use in vehicles and buildings.
On September 21, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged that his country would no longer finance coal-fired power plants abroad. This high-profile commitment to shift away from some forms of fossilfuel infrastructure came less than six weeks before a pivotal global climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland. It is already 1.1

Haven't we actually moved beyond relying on government to reduce carbonemissions? A few months ago, you could read all sorts of exhortations about the apparent, or at least impending, decoupling of carbonemissions and economic growth rates. Yes, wind and solarpower are rapidly becoming economic options.
The Ninth Circuit further concluded that even if the first prong was satisfied, the plaintiffs did not “surmount the remaining hurdle” of establishing that the relief they sought was within the power of Article III courts. Fossilfuel companies also filed their reply brief in their appeal of the remand order in Rhode Island’s case.
Announcing recently that the world broke a record by generating 30 percent of all electricity from renewable sources in 2023, the British think tank Ember said the data proves we are in a “new era” of energy in which a permanent decline in fossilfuels is “inevitable.” More on that shortly. But first, the undeniably good news.
Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed new power plant carbon pollution standards that, if strengthened, would go a long way to help meet the Biden administration’s goal of slashing carbonemissions in half from 2005 levels by the end of this decade. Last year, wind generated 10.2 Not even close.
