The destruction caused by climate change is directly linked to human activity, primarily burning fossilfuels. There are multiple realistic, tangible solutions that would rapidly reduce greenhouse gasemissions worldwide, yet policy addressing anthropogenic climate change remains slow and insufficient.
But as the market grows, some urge caution before using wastewater to create renewable naturalgas. Like all other industries, the clock is ticking for the sector to cut its carbon pollution, given President Joe Biden’s goal to halve the country’s greenhouse gasemissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
To underscore the negative impacts of fossilfuels on our grid, I also pointed to key research around resilience. gas plants were more likely to fail while resources like wind and solar helped keep the lights on. Any plan enacted under this subsection shall maximize the impact of the plan on improving economic and racial equity.
It turns out that most of them are 50-60% reliant on fossilfuels, with a lot of the remainder coming from nuclear and hydro. However, there are important differences in the mix of gas and coal in generation, which matters a lot since coal-fired generators emit much more carbon per kilowatt. FossilFuel Use.
With economic growth have come carbonemissions. As of 2016, half of its total emissions are from the power sector, with 20% from industry and 15% from transportation, and. According to the Energy Information Agency , South Korea’s power sector is heavily reliant on fossilfuels. 50% coal, 26% gas, and 25% nuclear.
It attempted to move away from fossilfuels and toward zero-carbon sources like solar power to supply electricity. Fossilfuel plants — coal-fired power plants in particular — cause serious air pollution problems. EPA might well get substantial reductions in carbonemissions this way.
. – Ontario has launched the second phase of a program to expand fossilfuelgas pipelines to new communities. This per-customer subsidy would likely cover the entire cost of switching these customers to existing low carbon technologies, like geothermal and air-source heat pumps.
CO 2 emissions remain mostly level through 2050—nowhere close to meeting US climate goals. Carbonemissions remain high. This is in total opposition to the US commitment under the Paris Agreement to achieve a 50-52 percent emissions reduction below 2005 levels by 2030, and net-zero by 2050.
Mexico’s carbonemissions are about the same as those of Texas, the highest-emitting US state. Per capita emissions, however, are far lower, given Mexico’s much larger population. AMLO has come under criticism for his commitment to fossilfuel production and refining in Mexico.
Because one of Pennsylvania’s two hubs, ARCH2, is also proposing to be heavily reliant on fossilfuel-based hydrogen production projects, I also detailed the serious risks of policymakers propping up such an approach. Here are three critical flags with pursuing a fossil-based “clean” hydrogen future.
EPA regulation of greenhouse gasemissions under the Clean Air Act (CAA) A. Standards for carbon and methane emissions from new sources Permitting requirements for carbonemissions from new stationary sources of major sources of existing pollutants. Standards for emissions from new vehicles.
As a result, when today’s fossilfuel end uses can be directly electrified via renewables instead, such as for heating in buildings , it is overwhelmingly a better decarbonization path. Geographic diversity, with hubs to be located in different regions of the US and using energy resources that are “abundant” in that region.
That’s understandable in terms of India’s current carbonemissions, which are now only a quarter of China’s. Naturalgas, oil, and nuclear are minor players. Naturalgas, oil, and nuclear are minor players. But we need to be more forward-looking.
The uprates apply to existing naturalgas (1.978 GW), nuclear (496 MWe), coal and onshore wind resources. Of the new projects, half are gas (6.143 GW), five are batteries (2.275 GW) and one is nuclear (887MWe). The projects consist of 39 uprates and 12 new construction proposals. MW-Day For 2025/26 Delivery Compared To $28.92/MW-Day
“ Natural” gas is not clean or green, as its misleading name implies Every reputable environmental organization and energy agency around the world is saying we can’t build new gas projects if we want to avoid complete climate chaos. Gas is a polluting fossilfuel which emits greenhouse gasses when it is produced and used.
Companies are spending millions fighting lawsuits that would hold them accountable for the costs that fossilfuel extraction has imposed on people and the planet. Further, these efforts are focused on carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and biofuels—technologies that aim to stash carbonemissions away, not reduce their production.
Through the Clean Air Act , and as affirmed—and reaffirmed—through multiple legal sagas, EPA is statutorily obligated to address carbon pollution from fossilfuel-fired power plants. Indeed, EPA still retains the ability to set strong standards that curtail carbon pollution at the scale, speed, and rigor required.
It’s not surprising to see companies lobbying to try to optimize this lucrative credit for their profits rather than ensuring the produced hydrogen is genuinely low-carbon, but it is astounding to see regulators at risk of following suit. And this isn’t just hypothetical.
On October 17, the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee held an informational briefing on Project Canary , a company that measures, analyzes and reports on methane emissions from naturalgas production and distribution infrastructure.
The Inflation Reduction Act’s new hydrogen production tax credit , known as code 45V, is intended to incentivize a shift to low-carbon hydrogen production by offering producers a credit that increases in value as the carbonemissions associated with produced hydrogen declines.
The Pittsburgh 2030 District , a project of the Green Building Alliance , has released its 2022 Progress Report , revealing District property partners have reduced carbonemissions by 44.8% This achievement moves the District within range of reaching its target goal of 50-65% reduction in carbonemissions before the 2030 deadline.
This is not only saving the school district money on its utility bills, but the array also eliminates tons of carbonemissions annually. By harnessing the power of the sun, we can significantly reduce our reliance on fossilfuels, which have long been a staple of our energy production.
In an attempt to expand its “natural” gas infrastructure across Ontario, Enbridge Gas is telling residents that gas is the cheapest way to heat their homes. Today, we filed a complaint with the Competition Bureau over Enbridge Gas’ deceptive marketing. But Enbridge Gas does not want you to know that.
There are an increasing number of companies and countries that are pledging to reach Net Zero carbonemissions–or carbon neutrality–by 2050. What the IEA found was that the world should not invest in or approve new fossilfuel projects. degrees , the “safe” threshold for global warming.
The forecast also predicts that Chinas overall fossilfuel demand will peak in 2028, coinciding with the peak in energy-related carbonemissions. Notably, naturalgas demand is expected to rise steadily, plateauing at 620-650 billion cubic meters in 2035.
Energy Information Administration (EIA)-- -- NaturalGas: Pennsylvania’s marketed naturalgas production, primarily from the Marcellus Shale, reached a record 7.6 Why aren't naturalgas or nuclear or coal, why aren't they applying for new generation capacity? Read more here. ]
With most energy investments still in fossilfuels, significant reform is needed to modernise the sector and meet Kazakhstan’s pledge to become net-zero by 2060. On 2 January 2022, massive protests erupted throughout Kazakhstan , initially over the price of liquefied petroleum gas. Photo credit: Matjaz Corel / Alamy.

By Anders Lorenzen The consumption of coal, the most climate polluting fossilfuel, is predicted to peak by 2025 in China, the world’s highest emitting country. Emissions peak China’s total carbonemissions from energy activities are expected to peak during 2025 at 10.1 million bpd of oil this year.
The OEB decision would also encourage more heat pumps in new buildings, which would lower energy bills for new homebuyers while lowering carbon pollution. Enbridge has sent deceptive communications to municipalities across Ontario, which have been refuted and debunked by Environmental Defence Naturalgas is actually methane gas.
TODAY’s Calendar Of Events TODAY 9:30: House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee meets to consider House Bill 1215 (Vitali-D- Delaware) the state Act 108 tax credit for hydrogen production would be limited to hydrogen produced for hard-to-electrify sectors, expanded to include a larger incentive to companies using hydrogen produced from renewable (..)
Hydrogen may have lost the race to fuel electric cars but it looks a likely contender to replace fossilfuels in trucks, ships, planes and heavy industry. The Tokyo Olympics will be powered by a fuel with ambition – hydrogen. It is planning to replace fossilfuels with hydrogen in heavy industries such as steel-making.
Lawmakers instead have decided to double down on committing more state resources to the fossil-fuel industry. Without so much as a public speech, hearing or floor debate, the General Assembly this week passed a $2 billion package of tax credits, 90% of which will go to the naturalgas industry.

Over the last few years I helped save enough nuclear plants from being replaced by fossilfuels to prevent a sharp increase in emissions But until last year, I mostly avoided speaking out against the climate scare. Environmental groups have accepted hundreds of millions of dollars from fossilfuel interests.
Strategies identified in a new industrial decarbonization roadmap would slash carbonemissions by 84% by 2050 in Pennsylvania, achieving crucial climate goals, yielding billions in annual savings, growing jobs, and improving public health, according to a new analysis prepared for the Ohio River Valley Institute.

Critically, Canada must quickly reduce its dependence on fossilfuels, given that producing and burning oil and gas accounts for over 80 per cent of Canada’s total emissions. The electricity sector is the main driver of emissions reduction, thanks to the coal phase out.
RGGI is a cap-and-invest program that would regulate carbonemissions from power plants. The Shapiro working group is comprised largely of fossilfuel industry executives and lobbyists who are likely to push to kill the program, at the expense of the public. billion in health savings and other benefits.”
There’s much about the IRA that deserves our support, but due to the influence of powerful fossilfuel lobbyists, the plan also includes projects whose benefits are questionable, even counter-productive. That footprint, Howarth goes on to say, “is worse than if you simply burned naturalgas directly for fuel instead.
