Their contribution to local air pollution is also highly disproportionate, as heavy-duty vehicles are responsible for 45 percent of on-road nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 57 percent of on-road fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by 13 percent and other key pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide by 77 and 90 percent, respectively.
