Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) were developed to replace a type of chemical that impacted the ozone layer in our upper atmosphere, but these replacements are potent greenhouse gases. There are a variety of rules under review that would require tighter controls and also help companies to find safer alternatives.

As I progressed in my education, I became fascinated with how some chemicals behave similarly when they interact in the environment, such as organic chemicals in salt marshes or mercury in the atmosphere. Some chemical compounds have the same atoms, but because they are arranged somewhat differently, they can have different properties.

In medicinal use, it's the substance that attacks the bacteria/virus/tumor. In pesticide use, it's the substance that kills or repels pests. Air emissions : Any gas emitted into the atmosphere from industrial or commercial activity. Typically used in conjunction with “greenhouse gas” but some emissions are not GHGs.
