Minnesotans are facing concurrent crises of climate change, high energy prices and inflation, and the inequitable public health impacts of fossil fuel airpollution. Renewable energy will help with all of that—but we need a grid that is designed for wind and solar instead of having to rely on expensive coal and gas plants.
My last post argued that EPA should immediately repeal the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan. It attempted to move away from fossil fuels and toward zero-carbon sources like solarpower to supply electricity. Here are the options going forward for regulating existing power plants.
Community solar will grow Pennsylvanias capacity to get energy from the sun, which will improve air quality and reduce our reliance on more polluting energy sources, said Alice Lu, Policy Analyst at Clean Air Council. Yet they are still a reliable and affordable source of energy.
Earlier this year, the MPSC approved a settlement agreement on Consumers Energy’s integrated resource plan that commits the company to retire all its remaining coal-fired power plants by 2025, construct no new fossil gas infrastructure, and build large amounts of new solarpower between now and 2040.
First of all, electric trains are quieter and less polluting. There are immediate gains for airpollution, especially as they pass through urban areas. It is experimenting with direct solarpower, which would be a world first. Burning stuff to make things go wastes a lot of energy as heat and noise.
The polling also showed an appetite for increased solar deployment in the Commonwealth. 65 percent of respondents would like to see Pennsylvania produce more solar, citing reasons ranging from reduced airpollution to energy bill savings. For more information, visit the Vote Solar - Pennsylvania webpage.
These communities are often already exposed to lots of airpollution from things like other industries, airports, and nearby highways. Pollution control is expensive and airpollution regulations are not strict enough. Focus on increasing truly renewable, low-emission energy such as wind and solarpower.
Electrification is a key strategy to reduce climate warming and local airpollution emissions from the transportation sector. Of course, battery and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (EVs) need to obtain electricity from the grid and use that electricity directly as a fuel to power their electric motors.
“Bechtel’s decision to cancel this dangerous plant is a crucial win for the health, welfare and safety of the residents of Renovo, who have been peddled lies about this project's purported benefits and illegally cut out of the permitting process,” said Joseph Otis Minott, Executive Director and Chief Counsel of Clean Air Council.
Liu, Purdue University Small-scale solarpower, also known as rooftop or distributed solar, has grown considerably in the U.S. by Yihsu Chen, University of California, Santa Cruz and Andrew L. over the past decade.
Multiple lines of analysis make clear that regardless of how cheap wind and solarpower get, without directly addressing pollution from coal and gas plants, the country’s clean energy transition will not happen fast enough. Each rule is moving independently, but they all impact power plant operations.

Wind and solar energy facilities emit no airpollution and have minimal environmental effects as compared to fossil fuel plants, but like all types of development, renewable energy projects do have impacts. However, misinformation sometimes leads those impacts to be misunderstood or exaggerated.
The Footprint Project wants to create a solar-powered microgrid “lending library” to deploy during disaster recovery efforts to reduce reliance on generators, which increase airpollution and are costly to run. Read the full story at Energy News Network.
By Leigh Hartman When Son Nguyen lived in the US, he saw rapidly advancing electric vehicle technology and heard stories from back in Vietnam about airpollution. The company sells electric motorbikes in Danang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is exploring the reuse of electric batteries and how to power its factory with green energy.

The rest of our power comes from a mix of nuclear power, renewables like hydro, wind and solarpower, and biofuel. Gas plants are also big industrial facilities that create airpollution for surrounding communities. Climate change, airpollution, and environmental racism are just a few.

The Court held, “it has emerged in the course of the hearing that there is no basis to impose a general prohibition in regard to the installation of transmission lines for the distribution of solarpower” in the previously defined area. It is also accepted that many regions in India are afflicted by extreme droughts, or, often, floods.
It complements Phoenix Contact’s Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP) system, which generates about half of the facility’s electric requirements. Phoenix Contact estimates the solarpower installation will reduce the company’s electricity costs by approximately $150,000 per year.
And while the construction of wind turbines generates small amounts of greenhouse gas emissions , DOE has recognized that–like solar PV–wind energy significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and airpollution emissions in the long term.
Minnesota’s two largest electric utilities— Xcel Energy and Minnesota Power —already have state-approved plans to significantly increase wind and solarpower while phasing out their coal-fired power plants.
The legislation committed nearly $400 billion to support, among other things, wind and solarpower, battery storage, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technologies that will make a significant dent in US heat-trapping emissions.
Solarpower is expected to make up about half of all additions of US electric generating capacity in 2023, according to data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). gigawatts (GW) of planned solar projects expected to come online this year is almost double the previous 13.4 Solar” only includes large-scale solar.
It’s due to a combination of factors, including tremendous demand for clean energy from states, utilities and consumers; federal regulations to reduce toxic airpollutants; and—most important—the simple fact that renewables and natural gas are now the cheapest options to meet our electricity needs.

The International Energy Agency said the world last year saw record growth in solarpower, adoption of electric vehicles, and global clean energy investments that outstripped fossil investments last year by $1.74 million people die prematurely from the ambient airpollution from the burning of fossil fuels.
Here’s why the claims are wrong: UCS has pointed out that while gas burns cleaner than coal at a power plant, it is far from a “clean” fuel because it still results in significant toxic airpollution.
