Minnesotans are facing concurrent crises of climate change, high energy prices and inflation, and the inequitable public health impacts of fossilfuelairpollution. When temperatures are high in the summer, increased electricity demand from spikes in air conditioning stresses the grid and raises costs.
My last post argued that EPA should immediately repeal the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan. It attempted to move away from fossilfuels and toward zero-carbon sources like solarpower to supply electricity. Here are the options going forward for regulating existing power plants.
Community solar will grow Pennsylvanias capacity to get energy from the sun, which will improve air quality and reduce our reliance on more polluting energy sources, said Alice Lu, Policy Analyst at Clean Air Council. Yet they are still a reliable and affordable source of energy.
Multiple lines of analysis make clear that regardless of how cheap wind and solarpower get, without directly addressing pollution from coal and gas plants, the country’s clean energy transition will not happen fast enough. Each rule is moving independently, but they all impact power plant operations.

These communities are often already exposed to lots of airpollution from things like other industries, airports, and nearby highways. Pollution control is expensive and airpollution regulations are not strict enough. Focus on increasing truly renewable, low-emission energy such as wind and solarpower.
Wind and solar energy facilities emit no airpollution and have minimal environmental effects as compared to fossilfuel plants, but like all types of development, renewable energy projects do have impacts. However, misinformation sometimes leads those impacts to be misunderstood or exaggerated.
“Bechtel’s decision to cancel this dangerous plant is a crucial win for the health, welfare and safety of the residents of Renovo, who have been peddled lies about this project's purported benefits and illegally cut out of the permitting process,” said Joseph Otis Minott, Executive Director and Chief Counsel of Clean Air Council.
It also improved air quality and made smog days a thing of the past. But what you probably haven’t heard is that our grid is getting dirtier again, with fossilfuels increasing in our electricity supply from burning natural gas. The Government (including the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change) unsurprisingly sought modification of this Order, given the transmission lines were admittingly only partially responsible for the attrition.
Solarpower is expected to make up about half of all additions of US electric generating capacity in 2023, according to data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). gigawatts (GW) of planned solar projects expected to come online this year is almost double the previous 13.4 Solar” only includes large-scale solar.
The legislation committed nearly $400 billion to support, among other things, wind and solarpower, battery storage, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technologies that will make a significant dent in US heat-trapping emissions. It also will save US consumers money because they will spend less on fossilfuels.
The state-specific fact sheet, On the Road to 100 Percent Renewables for Minnesota , outlines how it could meet its electricity needs completely and equitably with renewable energy by 2035 and dramatically reduce fossilfuel use in vehicles and buildings.
It’s due to a combination of factors, including tremendous demand for clean energy from states, utilities and consumers; federal regulations to reduce toxic airpollutants; and—most important—the simple fact that renewables and natural gas are now the cheapest options to meet our electricity needs. How cool is that?

Last month, the British-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) reported that London-based HSBC, one of the world’s top-10 biggest banks, has helped raise $47 billion for the fossilfuel industry since its 2022 announcement that it would not finance new gas and oil infrastructure. degrees Celsius, or 2.7
Our national overreliance on gas is evidently undermining energy access, not strengthening it, as some fossilfuel industry players would want you to believe. These claims just add to the deluge of greenwashing and disinformation from the fossilfuel industry. Don’t believe the industry spin.

In August of 2024, Fords Minister of Energy Stephen Lece announced that the province needed to procure 5000 megawatts of power (enough electricity for 4.5M Agnosticism isnt what were hoping to see from our leaders when it comes to green energy, but at least the door is open to renewables.
The Ninth Circuit further concluded that even if the first prong was satisfied, the plaintiffs did not “surmount the remaining hurdle” of establishing that the relief they sought was within the power of Article III courts. Fossilfuel companies also filed their reply brief in their appeal of the remand order in Rhode Island’s case.
