The Low Carbon Fuel Standard is one of California’s most innovative policy successes. The program requires oil companies to continually reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of California’s transportation fuels. Over its short lifetime, the program has already transformed many segments of the fuels market.
But while greenhouse gas emissions may be reduced, a delivery fulfilled by a diesel-burning truck may lead to increases in emissions of smog-forming nitrogen oxides and lung-damaging particulate matter. While the latter part of this conclusion is obvious, the former part isn’t as much.
So this is an attempt to put all of that in context and provide a hopefully comprehensive guide to how, when, and why to properly compare the two greenhouse gases. There is also a very small impact of the CH 4 oxidation to CO 2 itself for any fossil-fuel derived methane. (a) Historical comparisons.
It attempted to move away from fossilfuels and toward zero-carbon sources like solar power to supply electricity. Section 115 was probably aimed at more localized pollution problems like acid rain, but greenhouse gases unquestionably cause serious harm in other countries. The Plan was Obama’s signature climate policy.
Switching from fossilfuels like gasoline to increasingly clean electricity sources is vital for hitting climate and airpollution goals. However the long term drop in per person gasoline use is likely due to fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards that have made gasoline vehicles more efficient over the prior decades.
The IRA also includes some less than ideal fossil-fuel supporting incentives that will need continued monitoring. EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grants : This $5 billion program administered by the EPA aims to reduce climate warming emissions and other airpollution. It is made up of $4.75
In the coming years, Californians will begin to see a massive switch away from highly pollutingfossil-fueled trucks to zero-emission electric trucks. Additionally, the rule phases out the sale of fossil-fueled trucks in 2036. Why did the state create this truck rule?
Statement by Emilia Belliveau, Energy Transition Program Manager Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – At today’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development (ENVI), Members of Parliament grilled the fossilfuel industry about their climate pollution.
Background Japan has heavily relied on the use of fossilfuels for its power generation. According to the Japanese Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, the countrys fossilfuel dependency was 83.2% According to the Japanese Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, the countrys fossilfuel dependency was 83.2%
If passed, this new law would finally put an end to the millions of tonnes of coal – the world’s dirtiest and deadliest fossilfuel – that are shipped overseas from Canada’ west coast every year. Not only does burning coal contribute massively to rising greenhouse gas emissions, it also endangers people’s health.
Tailpipes from our cars, trucks and buses are also a major source of toxic local airpollution that disproportionately harms overburdened and underserved communities. An average global temperature change greater than 1.5 Reducing emissions from our vehicles is a huge part of this.
On May 8, the PJM Interconnection issued a statement on the US Environmental Protection Agency's final rule setting New Source Performance Standards for Greenhouse Gas Emissions and its potential impact on electric grid reliability. Resource Links: -- EPA Finalizes Standards To Reduce Pollution From FossilFuel-Fired Power Plants -- Gov.
This support for EV charging, and by extension EV ownership among individuals and businesses, is key for accelerating the electrification of the transportation sector that we need to make progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and local airpollution from transportation.
EPA : when it comes to prodding progress from coal- and gas-fired power plants, the nation’s second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, the agency is constrained, but it’s not out. And so it is with the immediate implications of West Virginia v.
T he California Air Resources Board reports that in 2021, heavy-duty trucking was responsible for over 30 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, making up roughly 10% of the state’s total emissions.
These communities are often already exposed to lots of airpollution from things like other industries, airports, and nearby highways. Pollution control is expensive and airpollution regulations are not strict enough. But is burning waste cheaper than landfill? So, what is the solution?
CT , the Supreme Court said this: We hold that the Clean Air Act and the EPA actions it authorizes displace any federal common law right to seek abatement of carbon-dioxide emissions from fossil-fuel fired power plants. at 528–529. 7411(b)(1)(B); see also §7411(a)(2). Here’s why it’s disingenuous.
Fossil gas, or “natural gas,” as it’s been cunningly branded, is a fossilfuel that causes warming and is harmful to human health. Its mainstream name is nothing more than a clever marketing scheme by Big Oil to make the fuel sound natural, safe, and clean. This is a huge problem. Many reasons!
This week’s advancements offer two new models for local governments looking to require or promote building electrification: airpollution and land use regulation. 2317, which would amend the City’s building code to limit greenhouse gas emissions from new and renovated buildings to 50 kilograms of carbon dioxide per million BTUs.
Oil and gas companies are proposing the widespread use of carbon capture to deal with their increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon capture aggravates airpollution. Industrial sites with carbon capture will have increased emissions of air and water pollutants, such as fine particulate matter.
The burning of transportation fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, is a substantial source of airpollution. ChargEVC-PA noted the Commission has already taken some steps to promote EV adoption.
But total emissions of greenhouse gases are around 50Gt of CO 2 ‘equivalents’. Delivering large removals would likely drive up costs of food and energy, exacerbating food insecurity and fuel poverty. Removing 2-5Gt of CO 2 each year is still a big undertaking.
On November 22, the Clean Air Council , PennFuture , and the Center for Biological Diversity announced they appealed an extension of Renovo Energy Center’s airpollution permit for a large gas-fired power plant — a significant source of new pollution within an environmental justice area.
Cuba’s power system is currently heavily reliant on fossilfuels. In 2022, fossilfuels accounted for about 95% of electricity generation, and about 48% of the fossilfuels used were imported, putting the country at high risk of price shocks and supply shortages.
Community advocates, Clean Air Council , and Environmental Integrity Project reported the termination of the Beech Hollow permit for a proposed 1,000-megawatt power plant that would have been a large source of new airpollution and greenhouse gas emissions in a region. Click Here for a copy of DEP’s termination letter.
One is a subsidy to Enbridge—a fossilfuel giant—to build a fossilfuel power plant. Instead, it will lock in pollutingfossilfuel infrastructure for decades. Instead, this false solution will foist more waste and airpollution on a community that is already overburdened with both.
Understanding Climate Change & Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The greenhouse effect is a popular name for the earth’s warming effect which occurs naturally when gasses in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping back into space. Greenhouse Gas Emissions are Increasing. C according to projections.

Despite the generous funding opportunities and holistic flexibilities baked into ACF, confusion around and misinformation about the rule may undermine this much-needed shift away from fossil-fueled trucks and buses. Also funded through the IRA, the program provides $250 million for non-competitive planning grants and around $4.6
By the end of the week one thing seemed likely, a price on shipping fuel’s carbon emissions even if it doesn’t end up being the exact levy proposed by the Marshall Islands. Regardless of what the price ends up being, it must be ambitious enough to close the gap between fossilfuels and more renewable options.
On August 24, a coalition of fifteen organizations based in Western Pennsylvania has sent a letter to the Shapiro administration denouncing the formation of a secret committee, whose members and meeting minutes are not known to the public, in an apparent attempt to scuttle Pennsylvania’s entrance into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
This investment will enable us to begin transitioning our fleet from burning fossilfuels to using renewable resources to reduce our carbon footprint, which will benefit both our company and our community.” It also helps lower the level of carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases heating up the climate, in the air.

Tom Wolf vetoed and disapproved Senate Concurrent Regulatory Review Resolution 1, which would have disabled the Commonwealth’s opportunity to enter the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and effectively achieve climate goals and reduce carbon emissions. while reducing harmful greenhouse gases. On January 10, Gov.
PennFuture , Clean Air Council , and Sierra Club appealed a second extension of the airpollution permit the Department of Environmental Protectionissued for the Bradford County Real Estate Partners Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility proposed near the Susquehanna River in Wyalusing Township in Bradford County.
Read more here.] -- “Exempt Pennsylvania from plant-closing EPA regulations such as the Wastewater Rule and the Cross State AirPollution Rule.” [ Note: That’s not the way it works. Eliminating this regulation would not address the issue of “fluctuating energy and fuel costs” nor would it somehow increase available supplies of energy.]
Background CNX reported on air monitoring from two monitors at each site-- one upwind and one downwind-- for a limited number of parameters-- Particulate Matter 2.5 No information from CNX correlated well development, waste handling, spills or unanticipated airpollution releases or other activities at any of the well pads or other sites.
Encina claims, none of the material would be sold as diesel fuel, synthetic oil or other forms of fossilfuel. Alexis Goldsmith, of Vermont-based Beyond Plastics , said the pyrolysis process will produce greenhouse gases and emit toxic volatile organic compounds, which she claimed would end up either in the air or water.

He has spent his career championing environmental issues like clean air and water, advocating for a transition away from fossilfuels, and promoting clean energy solutions such as energy efficiency, wind, solar and geothermal. Being an environmental activist in a fossilfuel state is not for the faint of heart.
In the first months of 2024, legislators in four states— Maryland , Massachusetts , New York , and Vermont —have pushed for legislation that would collectively require large fossilfuel producers and refiners to pay for hundreds of billions of dollars of state-level climate adaptation infrastructure.
This means fewer trucks on the road, less airpollution, and a lower need for fossilfuel. Food waste puts pressure on limited resources, accounts for greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to climate change. In addition, typically, locally grown foods are grown on smaller farms using more sustainable practices.
Transport accounts for about 13% of Kenya’s greenhouse gas emissions. Leonard Kirago, a PhD researcher from the University of Nairobi, told me that fossilfuel combustion in the transport sector is a major source of particulate matter (PM2.5) airpollution in Nairobi.
