As we clean up our energy system, we simultaneously reduce the tons of pollutants we now produce from burning coal, oil, and naturalgas. Pollution from these sources kills thousands of Americans a year and millions of people globally. Then there are the benefits of protecting nature. What’s not to like?
Avoiding the worst impacts of climatechange will require the rapid reduction in these emissions from the vehicles we drive. And walking and biking means avoiding airpollution and climate-changing emissions altogether. However, avoiding driving is even better.
When thinking about global emissions, don’t picture an individual—point your finger at powerful corporations, specifically the 88 companies that are largely responsible for climatechange. They obviously include climatechange, but it also include health impacts from airpollution and water pollution.
This means that, with few exceptions, new buildings will need to exclusively use electric appliances, and will not be allowed to contain any fossil-fuel infrastructure, like natural-gas lines. All-electric as the new normal. Just as important is the process that led to the new-buildings ordinance.
