They are also disproportionate sources of airpollution. At least with present technology, electric batteries do not seem to be a viable solution for long-haul trucking. Biofuels are a possibility, although in the long run they are more needed for planes and ships. Another option would not require new technology.
Tailpipes from our cars, trucks and buses are also a major source of toxic local airpollution that disproportionately harms overburdened and underserved communities. In other words, technological solutions are necessary but not sufficient. On the technology side, decarbonization is the key.
One prominent solution to this issue is using green technology to develop transportation and make them sustainable. For context, the perennial problem in designing novel chemical materials, like new biofuels or energy storage materials for batteries, is one of scale. To illustrate this, let’s consider designing a novel biofuel blend to replace diesel. At the same time, we’d like for it to produce less soot, and thus, less airpollution.

But, eventually, all tanks deteriorate: contact with soil can corrode steel tanks, and modern fuels like ethanol and biofuels can eat away at fiberglass tanks, causing them to chip, peel, and crack. The life span of a fiberglass UST is approximately 30-40 years, and properly maintained steel tanks can last even longer.
Contrary to claims made by some pundits, this transition away from fossil fuels can be done at moderate cost, primarily with technologies that are commercially available today. Electricity is undoubtedly the best choice of fuel in the transition, as it is a proven technology and a efficient way to propel vehicles of all types and sizes.
