There has been comparatively less attention to the decision by climatescientist Dr. Susan Avery not to seek re-election to the ExxonMobil board of directors. Yet this shift in corporate leadership is significant, marking the end of a chapter in ExxonMobil’s long and ongoing history of climate deception and disinformation.
Corporate leadership was informed about advances in climate science and incorporated those advances when its scientists built their own models. Regardless, the company publicly cast doubt on the reality of global warming, attempted to discredit climatescientists and climate models, and tried to block climate action.
While there is enormous potential for UN climate negotiations to transform climate action, meaningful progress has been delayed in part by the fossilfuel industry’s deceptive tactics. Last year’s COP was notable as the first to explicitly mention “fossilfuels” in the final decision document.
The UN agency concluded global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are at the highest levels in human history and without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors limiting climate change to 1.5°C The report Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of climate change looked at a variety of pathways for increased climate actions.
That was the timeline laid down by the most prestigious body of climatescientists for limiting warming to 1.5 What the IEA found was that the world should not invest in or approve new fossilfuel projects. And that fossilfuel production should shrink by 75 per cent by 2050 in order to limit warming to 1.5
But the United Nations has just said that the latest commitments of the 192 parties of the 2015 Paris agreement will equate to a 16% rise in global greenhouse-gas emissions in 2030 compared to 2010. While most climatescientists are not directly involved in high-level negotiations, their work is essential to the process.
This week’s report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s leading climatescientists, paints a terrifying picture of the future if Canada and the world don’t tackle fossilfuels with urgency. This cap must therefore be strict enough that the industry can no longer expand.
Delaying tactics Amin Nasser laid out the case, that he believes carbon capture and storage (CCS), and improving the efficiency of fossilfuel production, should be the priority in reducing emissions. Climatescientists say the world needs to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 43% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels.
Climate Week events highlighted commitments and actions needed from the financial sector and other corporations to support and spur government ambition. I had the honor of moderating one of the latter events, Scientists & Activists vs. FossilFuel Finance.
It turns out, for example, that climate-change researchers fly more frequently than scientists in other fields. Change 65 102184 ), climatescientists jet off two to three times a year on average, whereas other researchers get on planes just twice during that time. But other scientists also fly a lot.
With our children already paying a terrible price for climate change, we must act to protect their future, urges an IPCC scientist. When heatwaves disrupt our children’s education, it is time to demand climate action. I am writing this as a climatescientist and a mother of two young children.

To get an assessment of the progress thus far, as well as an idea if what has to happen next, I turned to two of my colleagues in the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) Climate & Energy Program: Principal ClimateScientist Rachel Licker and Transmission Policy Manager Sam Gomberg. Another 18.5
Fossilfuels are the root cause of climate change, of long-standing environmental injustices, and are also frequently connected to geopolitical strife and violent conflicts. Other countries are dependent upon these fossilfuels, they don’t make themselves free of them. This is a fossilfuel war.
The European Commission proposes replacing natural gas from any source in key sectors of its energy economy, dramatically expanding energy efficiency, renewables “instead of funding the fossilfuel industry elsewhere.” They want energy jobs in the EU. Let's dash into renewable energy at lightning speed.
“As the premier medical journal The Lancet states, “Climate change is the greatest global health threat facing the world in the 21st century, but it is also the greatest opportunity to redefine the social and environmental determinants of health.” At the Evangelical Environmental Network, we couldn’t agree more.

Several scientists, including authors of the IPCC report, told the Associated Press that the world is locked into exceeding the 1.5° We are pretty much locked into 1.5,” said report co-author Malte Meinshausen, a climatescientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia. mark soon. “We You know what doesn’t make news?
It needs to be an informed decision with equal input from climatescientists and economists. And his opinion was in the next 50 years, fine dust put in the atmosphere by fossilfuel burning could screen out so much of sunlight that the average temperature could drop six degrees and trigger an ice age. So that was in 1971.
In 2030 alone, the expected reductions are equivalent to 130 million metric tons of carbon dioxide – more than the annual emissions from 28 million gasoline cars. Future generations will look back on this as a game-changing moment in the fight for a safe climate,’ stated climatescientist and President/CEO of EEN, Rev.
While these nominations are dangerous, whats even more disturbing is the opening they create for fossilfuel corporations that have masterminded climate deception campaigns to regain social license. And weve already seen a resurgence of outright climate science denial.
It was a familiarly stark report card on the world’s progress on cutting emissions from the IPCC, which has been monitoring climate change since 1988. Despite the panel’s regular reports about the consequences of burning fossilfuels, between 1990 and 2019 global emissions rose 54 percent and they are still rising. and the U.K.
The news that started leaking last Friday is that the Trump administration wants to break up the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and essentially end NOAAs climate work by abolishing its primary research office and forcing the agency to instead help boost U.S. power generation, Canary Medias Dan McCarthy reported.
The Oregon Supreme Court agreed with a petitioner that the Attorney General should modify the text of a ballot title that, if adopted by voters, would amend an Oregon statute to require that greenhouse gas emissions from industry and fossilfuel sources be reduced by 100% below 1990 levels by 2050.
