Today, California took another important step in planning for the transition to cleanenergy, a step that’s been a long time coming. Setting goals and planning for the cleanenergy transition is important, but what really matters is following through on those plans.
California recently extended , for the second time, the operations of three gas plants to 2026. And all this polluting infrastructure has serious health and environmental implications for the surrounding communities. Most notable of these polluting emissions are nitrogen oxides (NOx).
From a high level, the updated plan seems significantly improved: the percentage of ZEVs in the fleet has increased substantially, they’ve signaled that they plan to focus the deployment of ZEVs in communities experiencing environmental injustices, and they’ve committed to purchasing only ZEVs after 2026. This is all great news.
Aging plants and state cleanenergy goals are certainly helping that trend. Source: Energy Information Agency Despite the economics increasingly favoring renewables, an additional 21.8 gigawatts of capacity from gas plants are planned to go online from 2023 to 2026.
