Electricity is necessary for reading this blog, phoning your family, and buying milk at the store. Most every modern public health, safety and security system we rely on also depends on the electric grid. To expand and modernize the nation’s electric infrastructure, the federal government recently announced new funding.
This is due in no small part to the “ nuclear bros ”: an active and seemingly tireless group of nuclearpower advocates who dominate social media discussions on energy by promoting SMRs and other “advanced” nuclear technologies as the only real solution for the climate crisis. What are SMRs?
Nearly all of the alliance members have a renewable electricity standard (RES), which requires utilities in their jurisdiction to increase their use of renewable energy to a particular percentage by a specific year. EN: What were your top findings? Under current policies and plans, carbon dioxide emissions would decline by only 12 percent.
Mention “nuclearpower” and attention almost immediately turns to safety. Despite huge advances in nuclear technology in recent decades, everyone still thinks about the accidents that occurred at older reactors like Chernobyl , Three Mile Island or Fukushima. Dozens of countries don’t even have – or don’t want – nuclearpower.
Rising electricity demand from U.S. The report shows that between 2021-2024, the number of data centers in the U.S. Electricity demand to power these centers is projected to increase as well. The report also highlights proposals to resurrect expensive and dangerous nuclearpower plants solely to serve data centers.
The EIA reports that: “Fossil fuel sources accounted for about 69% of South Korea’s electricity generation in 2019, and the share of nuclearpower accounted for 25%. In 2021, South Korea set a target under the Paris Agreement of a 40% cut from 2018 levels by 2030. At the moment, South Korean climate policy is in flux.
6 , the notorious law the Legislature passed in 2019 that slapped Ohio ratepayers with a monthly surcharge to bail out two struggling nuclear plants. 6 is still driving up Ohioans’ electricity bills—and undermining the state’s prospects for a clean energy future. Even if you don’t live in Ohio, you may have heard about H.B. Since H.B.
Fossil gas power plants currently provide the largest source of electricity generation and capacity in the United States. However, as we replace fossil fuels with clean electricity for heating and transportation to meet our climate goals, these peak demands will increasingly shift to the winter in many parts of the country.
Fifteen percent of electricity is renewable. Germany decides to phase out nuclearpower, complicating efforts to decarbonize the power sector. Renewables are a third of electricity consumption. Renewables are 42% of electricity. Germany has dragged its feet on EVs because of its powerful car industry.
For California power grid experts, September is a nerve-wracking month, still very much part of danger season on the West Coast. At any point in the summer, extreme heat could trigger electricity supply shortages and rotating power outages. But September is the month when this type of power outage is most likely in California.
And I love hearing about new renewable electricity records as spring unfolds. That same month, New England recorded its lowest demand ever for electricity from the regional grid, which the grid operator attributed to record rooftop solar production. Spring tends to be a time when there is lower electricity demand.
United Nations experts will assess plans to release treated radioactive water into the ocean from a closed nuclearpower plant in Japan. What’s Up With Water – November 15, 2021 – This week’s episode cover’s a hunger crisis in Afghanistan and a project in New Jersey’s largest city to remove lead service lines. MILLION GALLONS.
On March 7, the Independent Fiscal Office issued its latest Pennsylvania Electricity update that reports the electricity grid is dependent on one fuel for 59% of the state’s electricity generation-- natural gas-- followed by nuclearpower-- 31.9%, coal-- 5.4% from other sources. Testimony before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce For a hearing on “Power Struggle: Examining the 2021 Texas Grid Failure” Written statement submitted by: Michael D. Some have argued that weather-dependent energies would, paradoxically, make electricity even more reliable. percent, 47.4
This would have enabled the CAISO to expand its operations into the rest of the west as a regional transmission organization (RTO), an independent entity that plans and operates the electricity grid. The overall idea, often referred to as grid regionalization , was to create one grid operator and power market for the entire west.
The Grohnde plant is one of the German nuclearpower plants which is due to shut down at the end of 2021. A recent report has shed light on the scale of the climate cost of Germany decommissioning its nuclearpower plants. Photo credit: Preussen Elektra. By Anders Lorenzen. Costly shutdown.
Those findings might surprise physicists, who will be aware that the energy density of nuclear fission is so high that just a fingertip of uranium has an energy equivalent of 5000 barrels of oil. Nuclear is also capable of supporting the decarbonization of other sectors, such as heating and transport.
DEP’s Citizens Advisory Council is scheduled to meet in-person and virtually on October 19 to hear a presentation from DEP on the decontamination and decommissioning of oil and gas wastewater treatment facilities, nuclearpower plants, waste dump sites and other sites in Pennsylvania. On June 13, Public Utility Commission Chairman Gladys Brown Dutrieuille told the House Consumer Protection, Technology and Utilities Committee Winter Storm Elliot has again demonstrated extreme weather can have a significant impact on electric grid operations in terms of reliability and resilience.
But what you probably haven’t heard is that our grid is getting dirtier again, with fossil fuels increasing in our electricity supply from burning natural gas. That means carbon emissions from electricity in Ontario will be rising back up again after years of decline. Source: IESO Annual Planning Outlook (updated Feb 2021).
To reach net-zero 2050 via this scenario, approvals and investments in new production facilities for coal, oil, and natural gas – and for coal-burning plants without carbon capture – must stop (wait for it) as of the end of 2021. That’s the end of THIS YEAR!
A 2021 North Carolina law requires the N.C. Utilities Commission (NCUC) to “take all reasonable steps” to achieve a 70% reduction in carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ) emissions from electric generating units (EGUs) by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality for the utility generation system by 2050. January 22, 2023.
But the country changed course as a result of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, which led to the forced shutdown of nuclearpower plants and greater reliance on fossil fuels. As of May 2022 , there are 163 operating coal-fired power plants in Japan. As a result, Japan’s CO 2 emissions increased, peaking in 2013.
On November 23, the Public Utility Commission released 2021 Winter Reliability Overview Reports from the state’s major natural gas distribution companies (NGDCs), along with a related Readiness Report from the Energy Association of Pennsylvania (EAP). Driven by emissions from power generation and industrial activity — activity that generates jobs and economic opportunity for southwestern Pennsylvania — our greenhouse gas emissions, on a per capita basis, are about 50% higher than elsewhere in the state or country. At the same time, we are making progress in reducing our carbon footprint.
At RePlanet Nederland, we are delighted that the European Commission has proposed, on December 31, 2021, to include nuclear energy in the sustainable finance taxonomy.
