The second-most expensive campaign in Maine history is a debate over energy infrastructure. New England Clean Energy Connect, a 145-mile-long transmission line will cut through the commercial timberlands of western Maine. Lobbying campaigns are being funded largely by rival energy groups.

In the Nile River basin last week, a political power shift in Sudan could turn up the heat on a long-simmering dispute over a major dam in the region. The electric company Central Maine Power got its state and federal permits and began construction on a high-voltage transmission line called New England Clean Energy Connect.

Publicly, Elsevier claims to be committed to a clean energy future. According to the 2021 report of Elsevier’s parent company, RELX, roughly 2.5 million articles were submitted for review to Elsevier last year, and the company published more than 600,000 articles in 2021 alone. At UCS, we think Elsevier can do better.

Cheaper renewable energy attracts private investment and makes limits on fossil fuels more feasible. In short, we’re seeing something like a slimmed-down Green New Deal.

Much of our electricity system is 50 to 70 years old, yet current plans for domestic manufacturing, electric vehicle fleets, community solar gardens and more clean energy all depend on a modern grid. In some states, when the legislature created new clean energy goals they also started transmission planning to help meet those goals.

The WMO’s GHG bulletin’s headline takeaways are stark: Atmospheric concentrations of three major heat-trapping gases, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) hit all-time highs in 2021 (see table below). Methane emissions showed their biggest annual increase in 2020 and again in 2021. A truly scary prospect.

Renewable energy will help with all of that—but we need a grid that is designed for wind and solar instead of having to rely on expensive coal and gas plants. Getting energy from where it’s produced to where it’s needed. Xcel Energy pledged to provide customers with 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2050.
