To decarbonize the power grid, we’re going to need tons of renewable energy from sources such as solar and wind. We’re also going to need a significant amount of energy storage to save some of that renewable energy for later. So, I’m really excited about energy storage right now.
The end of every year is a great time for taking stock of what the year has broughtincluding in terms of cleanenergy in the power sector. As it turns out, 2024 has provided a whole lot of cleanenergy progress as fodder for that stock-taking. Cumulative US utility-scale battery power capacity.
Additionally, long-term energy plans consider how utilities will operate their existing power generating facilities and what type of new facilities they might build and when. In its previous energy plan , which the MPSC approved in 2020, DTE planned to operate Monroe until 2040. See this notice for more details on how to submit.)
In 2020, Hawaii’s Public Utility Commission implemented an expedited process for pilot approvals. In March of this year, Connecticut’s Public Utility Regulatory Authority established what it calls Innovative Energy Solutions, a new process to support pilots. In addition, the MPSC must have clear guidelines to approve and assess pilots.
planned capacity additions in 2025, with the bulk of these new plants planned for states without a current cleanenergy standard (the proposed Wisconsin plants wont show up in the EIA data unless they are approved by the state). Call me when we get to the nitty gritty!
The progress in the numbers The new numbers are from the federal Energy Information Administration (EIA), which collects data from power plant operators from across the country. They offer a lot of good news about cleanenergy progress. Renewables up, coal down More renewable energy is desirable for a lot of reasons.
The second-most expensive campaign in Maine history is a debate over energy infrastructure. New England CleanEnergy Connect, a 145-mile-long transmission line will cut through the commercial timberlands of western Maine. Lobbying campaigns are being funded largely by rival energy groups. All that spending adds up.
Throughout 2020 Latham lawyers reviewed each of the 34 California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) appellate cases, whether published or unpublished. Latham’s webcast discussing this publication and the key CEQA cases and trends of 2020 is available here. Other key cases from 2020 include: Save the Agoura Cornell Knoll v.
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) and Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced that proposed amendments to the state’s CleanEnergy Standard (CES) were finalized earlier this month without substantive changes from draft language initially proposed by the agencies in April 2022.
Climate policy has been boosted by dramatic changes in the economics of cleanenergy. Rooftop solar costs in 2020 were a third of what they had been in 2010. In 2020, the cost of single-axis utility scale solar was only a fifth of what it was in 2010. Wind power costs fell by half from 2008 to 2021.
Consumers, cleanenergy developers and state governments have all warned about a looming crisis of inadequate energy infrastructure. The benefits of updated transmission are obvious: greater reliability, lower energy costs, and a resilient modern power system with new cleanenergy sources.
According to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the ILO's Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual Review 2022, the number of renewable energy jobs increased by around 700,000 globally between 2020 and 2021. Increased investment in the cleanenergy sector can support the continued trajectory of this job market lifting up Pennsylvania’s communities.
But solar is the big winner here, with it’s share of total US capacity increasing from 7% in 2020 to 29% in 2050. Without additional climate or cleanenergy policies, gas (and to a lesser degree, coal) will both provide electricity and will be used to balance the grid with growing levels of variable wind and solar generation.
For anyone who isn’t an energy expert this can make substantive participation in the process difficult, if not impossible. That’s a problem – not just for energy cost and reliability but for the future of the cleanenergy transition. That’s a concern because important energy decisions are made at the CPUC.

Cleanenergy installations in the U.S. dipped 3% in 2021 compared to 2020 as policy issues held back the potential for new wind and solar installations, according to a market report released by the American Clean Power Association (ACP). Read the full story at Utility Dive.
It issued five Flex Alerts in 2020, eight in 2021, but there’s only been one so far this year. For example, the two rotating blackouts in August 2020 occurred during energy supply shortages that happened at 6:38 to 7:40 p.m. When grid conditions are tight, California’s grid operator issues Flex Alerts. and 6:28 to 6:48 p.m.
In response, Europe has scrambled to replace flows and decouple this dependence , in part by shifting away from gas to cleanenergy alternatives, in part by increasing local gas production, and in part by turning to imports of liquified natural gas, or LNG—including from the US. Credit: U.S. Let us at least stave off the worst.
China did not sign onto the global methane pledge to reduce methane emissions 30% by 2030 from 2020 levels, but in the joint declaration announced an intention to “develop a comprehensive and ambitious National Action Plan on methane, aiming to achieve a significant effect on methane emissions control and reductions in the 2020s.”
These owners understood both the need for a supply of energy, and the value and reliability of cleanenergy. A significant fraction of the cleanenergy built in the US was financed on the commitments by such high profile, public data companies. Data centers’ total energy demand is challenging to meet.
Updated analysis from 2020 shows that emissions traced to the 88 largest carbon producers contributed approximately 60 percent?of If they do, they will see the only truly robust forward course is the one that puts the accelerated transition to cleanenergy at its center.
Once the battery looks up to code, it is off to the grid to power our renewable energy future! Battery energy storage is powerful and growing. Battery energy storage can help store cleanenergy for the grid. From 2020 to 2021, large-scale US battery storage system installations tripled from 1.4
