Last week, I joined my colleagues at COP28 in Dubai , as negotiators and civil society push for a fossilfuel phaseout to meet climate goals. The industry is pushing a narrative that misleadingly calls out emissions , not fossilfuels as the problem. Global net anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions 1990–2019.
Fossilfuel power plant owners are facing increased accountability for their air and water pollution, including from a new round of environmental and public health protections that are being rolled out by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Step 1: There is a natural greenhouse effect. Thus there must be a large amount of IR absorbed by the atmosphere (around 158 W/m 2 ) – a number that would be zero in the absence of any greenhouse substances. Step 2: Trace gases contribute to the natural greenhouse effect. The Earth’s Energy Budget (NASA).
Fuel transport – Spring floods can hinder the transportation of fuels like coal. While it is a heavily polluting fossilfuel that is set to continue declining as a fuel source for US electricity generation over the next decade, coal still accounted for roughly 20 percent of the country’s generation in 2022.
It turns out that most of them are 50-60% reliant on fossilfuels, with a lot of the remainder coming from nuclear and hydro. This table shows how much power is generated from fossilfuels by the top ten utilities (ranked by market value). There was more fuel oil in use in some places than I expected. Carbon Goal.
, its district, appellate , and supreme courts decided in favor of Urgenda, an upstart environmental organization, ordering the government to more aggressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Environmental Protection Agency (2007) forced the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Everyone produces greenhouse gases.
Our national overreliance on gas is evidently undermining energy access, not strengthening it, as some fossilfuel industry players would want you to believe. These claims just add to the deluge of greenwashing and disinformation from the fossilfuel industry. Don’t believe the industry spin.
The bench trial took place last month in the state capitol, Helena, where 16 youth plaintiffs ages 5 to 22 made the case that Montana’s unwavering promotion of fossilfuels violates the state constitution’s guarantee to a “clean and healthful environment.” Whether Montana’s GHG emissions can be measured incrementally.
Smoke screens for oil and gas UCS has documented how ExxonMobil and other major fossilfuel companies hide behind trade associations and front groups to do their lobbying and disinformation dirty work, and EID is a prime example.
The 49ers called it “ a meaningful part of our commitment to more sustainable practices” and praised United for its SAF program, which both companies said can reduce greenhouse gas emissions “by up to 85% on a lifecycle basis.” Indeed, NRG Energy operates several oil, coal, and fossil gas facilities from Delaware to California ( map here ).
Union of Concerned Scientists 2019 Killer Heat analysis. When I first read the UCS Killer Heat report in 2019, I put my head in my hands and closed my eyes. And, because my home has solar panels, a heat pump was a smart choice to reduce my energy costs and my reliance on fossilfuels. The not-so-distant future.
Under the LCFS each fuel pathway gets a unique carbon intensity (CI) based on a lifecycle analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and use of the fuel. This approach holds fuel producers accountable for reducing fossilfuel use and other global warming pollution in their supply chains.
The IPCC has introduced a new high-end risk scenario, stating that a global rise “approaching 2 m by 2100 and 5 m by 2150 under a very high greenhouse gas emissions scenario cannot be ruled out due to deep uncertainty in ice sheet processes.”. The IPCC gives more consideration to the large long-term sea-level rise beyond the year 2100.
A friend asked me if a discussion paper published on Statistics Norway’s website, ‘ To what extent are temperature levels changing due to greenhouse gas emissions? ’, was purposely timed for the next climate summit ( COP28 ). I don’t know the answer to his question. But this discussion paper is problematic for sure.
With most energy investments still in fossilfuels, significant reform is needed to modernise the sector and meet Kazakhstan’s pledge to become net-zero by 2060. Social unrest related to fossilfuels is not a new phenomenon in Kazakhstan. Chinese investments fuel Kazakhstan’s energy economy. By Kate Watters.
Japan ) and a second in Yokosuka in 2019 ( Yokosuka Climate Case ). In the 2019 case, the judgments focused on the procedural aspect of the replacement of the coal-fired power plant and discussion of the climate issues was limited. Background Japan has heavily relied on the use of fossilfuels for its power generation.
The other was Kendall Dilling, CEO of the Pathways Alliance, a new group made up of oil sands producers like Cenovus, with the intention to push carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to perpetuate fossilfuel production. The fossilfuel sector directly accounts for less than 1 per cent of all jobs in Canada.
United States case, plaintiffs sought an order directing the federal government to slash the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. The plaintiffs had asked the court to issue a “remedial plan” that would require Montana to take many steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossilfuel production in the state.
The case concerns the scope of the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from existing fossilfuel power plants under Section 111(d) of the Clean Air Act (CAA). In January 2021, the D.C. Read the brief here.
Since 2019, Bolivia has been the world’s top importer of mercury, a toxic metal that helps extract gold from ore. It’s rated for about 1,300 megawatts — roughly the size of a large fossilfuel plant — but now the dam can only produce 800 megawatts.
Canada’s oil and gas industry, responsible for the largest chunk of Canada’s polluting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, continues to drive climate change while trying to weaken or stop the actions we need to address the climate crisis. Canada needs to have a real conversation about a fair and equitable phaseout of fossilfuels.
The 2021 climate audit by the Auditor General is the follow-up to one produced in 2019, which provided 22 recommendations for the province to improve its climate outcomes. Ontario is failing to reduce the province’s greenhouse gas emissions. Especially Ontario, which is the second most polluting province in Canada.
Following a recent Auditor General report that Ontario is failing in its progress on tackling climate change, Minister Piccini made some dubious claims about Ontario’s work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He said: “I can look Ontarians in the eye and say Ontario is a leader in greenhouse gas reductions in this federation.
But despite this, it did not shift the dominance of fossilfuels. The President of the Energy Institute, a UK-based body, Juliet Davenport said : “Despite further strong growth in wind and solar in the power sector, overall global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions increased again. These corporations and politicians don’t want to see a transformational transportation system we need, one that prioritizes people before highways, health before harm, access before asphalt, climate before corporations, freedom over fossilfuels. How did we get here? Why aren’t there more ways to get around my community?
BLM can restrict the scope of the Willow Project in order to mitigate adverse effects on surface resources, including adverse effects attributable to the project’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our brief also emphasizes the importance of the federal government adopting a rational approach to its assessment of new fossilfuel infrastructure.
My caption was “NEPA Is Still Going to Pose an Obstacle to Leasing Public Lands for FossilFuel Extraction.” When Secretary Zinke terminated the moratorium in 2017, litigation ensued and, in 2019, the Court ruled that the Zinke Order was subject to NEPA. Once more, Judge Morris found DOI’s NEPA analysis inadequate.
Planning law has proven to be a useful tool for climate activists seeking to block or challenge new fossilfuel developments. However, it has also been used to frustrate efforts to accelerate the renewable energy transition by delaying the construction of new renewable energy infrastructure (see here ).
In December 2018, after having successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector by 53.3%, a majority of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) jurisdictions announced plans to design a program to address carbon emissions from the combustion of transportation fuels. (See Background.
Understanding Climate Change & Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The greenhouse effect is a popular name for the earth’s warming effect which occurs naturally when gasses in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping back into space. Greenhouse Gas Emissions are Increasing. F) of warming in the 21st century.
Suncor is also a founding member of the Pathways Alliance , a fossilfuel industry association made up of six major tar sands producers and the newest major lobby group. Suncor Energy Inc: 2023-Present Imperial Oil Ltd: 2013–2019 ExxonMobil Corp: 1981-2013 Villain Career Profile Rich Kruger has a long and storied career in oil.
Years of advocacy for better project review rules resulted in the passage of the IAA in 2019. Alarmingly, the government removed greenhouse gas emissions as effects under the federal government’s jurisdiction. This left communities with a flawed decision-making process that put the environment and the public at risk.
How much worse things get, how soon, will depend on human actions, and on luck: how fast world greenhouse-gas emissions are cut ; how fast other pollutants that are now masking greenhouse heating are cut; and how favorably or unfavorably remaining scientific uncertainties – about climate sensitivity, speed of change, and impacts – turn out.
However, it is a much-awaited step in the right direction as the federal government moves to cap greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the highest polluting industry in Canada. As proposed, the oil and gas industry must reduce its emissions by 35-38 per cent from 2019 levels by 2030. The framework is by no means perfect.
Although criticized for half measures and loopholes, blamed in part on the influence of petrostates, the agreement reached at the conference should be welcomed as a significant step in the move away from fossilfuels. C within reach. But it notes Parties are off track when it comes to meeting their Paris Agreement goals.
Fossilfuels currently account for around 60% of electricity generation , a share that it aims to reduce to 35% by 2030 through the expansion of renewables, including hydropower, and in particular wind and solar. The transition away from fossilfuels has, however, been an elusive goal for Argentina to date.
In 2022, the United Nations released a special report focusing on the role of nonstate actors, including law firms, in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The ABA House of Delegates, the ABA’s policy making body, adopted resolutions urging action on climate change in 2008 and 2019. In the U.S., In the U.S.,
Changing the way we produce and consume food could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 10.3 This has given a much-needed boost to the drive to wean the world off fossilfuels and transition to renewable energy. billion tonnes a year. government in reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the world is to make strategic investments in research and development (R&D), such as those included in the Energy Act of 2020 , which serves as a strong foundation to an all-of-the-above approach: renewables, nuclear, fuel and energy efficiency, hydrogen, electrification (i.e.,
This is a good opportunity for the government of Ontario to select a more appropriate person to lead the agency, ideally one that supports the much needed transition away from fossilfuels.
Agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the raising of livestock and growth of crops for human consumption represent 14% of global GHG emissions. While burning methane to generate energy releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the overall climate impact is reduced and the gas could potentially replace fossilfuel sources.)
On February 8, 2019, the Land & Environment Court of New South Wales upheld the government’s denial of an application by Gloucester Resources Limited to construct an open cut coal mine in New South Wales (NSW). Photo of scenic Gloucester Valley by Groundswell Gloucester. By Dena Adler. Section 4.15(1) Four Key Takeaways. In the U.S.,
Fully half of Montgomery County's population lives in communities committed to a fossil-fuel-free future. Lower Providence Township was recently the 19th municipality in the county to adopt those or similar goals.
By Anders Lorenzen The emissions from methane , a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG) with 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide (CO2) rose in 2023 despite several pledges and initiatives to reduce emissions. Graph credit: IEA.
