Driving on Electricity Is Now Much Cleaner than Using a Gasoline Car

Union of Concerned Scientists

Replacing gasoline with electricity greatly reduces the carbon emissions from driving. Based on where electric vehicles (EVs) have been sold, driving the average EV in the US produces global warming emissions equal to a hypothetical 94 mile per gallon gasoline car, or less than a third of the emissions of the average new gasoline car.

We Need to Change Our Assumptions About Gas Plant Reliability

Union of Concerned Scientists

In extreme weather, when electricity demand is at its highest and the grid needs gas plants the most, gas plants have been failing at alarming rates. Gas plants failed at a scale that jeopardized grid reliability for large regions of the United States during severe winter storms in 2011 , 2014 , 2018 , 2021 , and 2022.

How Much Battery Storage Does Illinois Need?

Union of Concerned Scientists

Energy storage, or the storing of electricity for later use on the power grid, plays an important role in the clean energy transition. Renewable generation is variable—wind and solar power produce electricity when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining. Curtailment means we are wasting otherwise clean, perfectly usable electricity.

South Korea and Climate Change

Legal Planet

According to the Energy Information Agency , South Korea’s power sector is heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Two thirds of generation capacity is based on fossil fuels, split evenly between coal and natural gas, with 17% nuclear, and 14% hydro and other renewables. 50% coal, 26% gas, and 25% nuclear.

Grid Modeling Overview: Four Types of Models Guiding the Transition to Clean Electricity

Union of Concerned Scientists

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: Without power grid modeling tools, the transition to clean electricity would be an absolute mess. Luckily, we don’t have to resort to guesswork because we have sophisticated grid modeling tools that help guide the transition to clean electricity. Surely that would not end well.

New England’s Offshore Wind Resource Is a Winter Powerhouse

Union of Concerned Scientists

It was a bitter cold day on January 5, 2018, and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker had no choice. Demand for electricity was high, but there was not enough gas available to keep all the gas-fired power plants running. A grid problem on land, a grid solution at sea The situation in January 2018 was extreme, but it was not unique.

What Does Western Grid Regionalization Mean for California?

Union of Concerned Scientists

It gained traction in California in 2018, although that particular effort fell short. At the highest level, the contiguous United States is composed of three electrical grids: the Western Interconnection, the Eastern Interconnection, and the Texas Interconnection. It’s not a new concept. It would change Western energy markets.
