A CERES of fortunate events…

Real Climate

The CERES estimates of the top-of-atmosphere radiative fluxes are available from 2001 to the present. We can explore the issues and pitfalls of this using the ‘simple model’ of the greenhouse effect we explored back in 2007. The simplest model for the greenhouse effect. A simple model with feedbacks.

A distraction due to errors, misunderstanding and misguided Norwegian statistics

Real Climate

A friend asked me if a discussion paper published on Statistics Norway’s website, ‘ To what extent are temperature levels changing due to greenhouse gas emissions? ’, was purposely timed for the next climate summit ( COP28 ). I don’t know the answer to his question. But this discussion paper is problematic for sure.

Sprinkling basalt over soil could remove huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

Physics World

Sprinkling powered basalt over natural ecosystems would remove vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the Earth’s atmosphere while also improving soils. Worldwide, nations are pledging to reach net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, if not earlier. An obvious option is to plant more trees, which brings other ecological benefits.

Should the official Atlantic hurricane season be lengthened?

Real Climate

But this also raises other questions: 1) Can we expect the season to continue to lengthen as global warming from increasing concentration of globally well mixed greenhouse gas (GWM-GHG) continues to warm the Atlantic SSTs? In particular, they don’t just respond to SST changes, but also how the atmosphere changes as the SSTs change.

Something Stinks: California Must End Manure Biomethane Accounting Gimmicks in its Low Carbon Fuel Standard

Union of Concerned Scientists

Under the LCFS each fuel pathway gets a unique carbon intensity (CI) based on a lifecycle analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and use of the fuel. The share of dairy cows in California on farms of 2500 cows or more grew from 46 percent in 2017 to 61 percent in 2022.
