Examples are benzene, hydrofluoric acid, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogenoxides, and many, many other toxic pollutants. One good example of the nexus between global warming and local pollution is ground-level ozone. To make matters worse, NOx contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone and secondary PM2.5,
The Department of Environmental Protection published notice in the April 27 PA Bulletin inviting public comments on a proposed declaration of an Exceptional Air Quality Event due to 2023 wildfires from Canada and New Jersey causing elevated levels of nitrogenoxides and volatile organic compounds impacting ozone pollution in Pennsylvania.
The WAIRE Program essentially requires warehouse operators to take actions to electrify warehouse activities and the trucks that visit warehouses in order to reduce nitrogenoxides (NOx) and diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. Areas that are in “nonattainment” are subject to additional requirements (e.g., Further Actions.
The Basin does not meet the state or federal ambient air quality standards for ozone and particulate matter, and existing regulations have to date proved insufficient to bring the Basin into compliance. According to the 2016 AQMP, mobile sources contributed about 88% of total NO x emissions in the Basin in 2012.
This proposed analysis includes the impacts of nitrogenoxides and volatile organic compounds from the wildfire in Quebec, Canada on June 6 to June 8, 2023 and June 28 to July 1, 2023. The impacts from the 2023 Canadian wildfires had significant impacts on air quality in 2023. Click Here for a copy of the analysis.
Air Pollution Air pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitrogenoxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from various stages of shale gas development. NOx and VOCs mix in the presence of sunlight to form ground level ozone (smog).
There have been no comprehensive changes in Oil and Gas Program regulations covering unconventional shale gas development in seven years-- since 2016-- and no comprehensive update in conventional oil and gas industry regulations in 36 years-- since 1987. Read more here.
The grant program ended in 2016 due to a lack of funding. The SAB Staff Office is especially interested in scientists with the expertise described above who have knowledge and experience relating to criteria pollutants (carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogenoxides, ozone, particulate matter and sulfur oxides).
