Here are the measures that would lead Ontario to a fully clean electricity grid: Increase Wind and Solar Power. This is completely doable.

Ontario has a successful track record when it comes to building renewable power. Between 2005 and 2017 Ontario phased-out coal plants, reducing greenhouse gas pollution from our electricity system by 93 per cent. And between 2009 and 2016, Ontario built over 2000 MW of solar power and about 3000 MW of wind power.

Pollution data released from Canada’s newest waste incinerator, located east of Toronto, showed releases of dioxins and furans 12 times greater than permitted in 2016. The world is trying to get away from burning fossil fuels for energy because it’s a major source of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions is from transportation. This accounts for 28% of emissions, coming in above agriculture, commercial & residential, industry and power generation. As of 2016, wind provided 8 percent of US electric generation.

Under the LCFS each fuel pathway gets a unique carbon intensity (CI) based on a lifecycle analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and use of the fuel. The CI of an electric vehicle charged with solar power is zero, and most of the biofuels fall somewhere in the middle [i].
