Much evidence has surfaced about the tactics to which fossilfuel companies have resorted to distort the facts, intimidate their opponents, and block climate action that might hurt their bottom lines. The following blog is an excerpt from the UCS Report Decades of Deceit. Read the full report here.
The fossilfuel industry has long been the main driver of climate change, but Big Oil’s CEOs and profiteers would like you to believe that it is a part of the solution. One of the people peddling this idea is the man behind Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) – Murray Edwards, the FossilFuel Fanatic.
The year 2023 was by far the warmest in Earths recorded history, and perhaps in the past 100,000 years , shattering the previous record set in 2016 by 0.27C (0.49F). Humans have a direct effect on albedo through emitting industrial aerosols such as sulfates, which accumulate in the atmosphere due to the burning of fossilfuels.
The future trajectories are based on different scenarios, such as versions of the future where the world comes together to take action and phase out fossilfuels, or versions where fossilfuel production continues throughout this century. One team found that emissions just up until 2016 could lead to approximately 2.33.6
The bill ( LD 1868 ), passed by the Maine Legislature on June 13, will reduce the state’s reliance on imported fossilfuels by requiring all of Maine’s power to come from renewable energy and other carbon-free electricity sources by 2040. She signed the bill into law on June 20, 2025.
2016 The Paris Climate Agreement was signed on Earth Day. Reduce the dependency on fossilfuels It urges governments, companies, and individuals to reduce fossilfuel dependency and scale up sustainable alternatives. 1990 Earth Day expanded globally to 141 countries.
In response, Multnomah County, which includes Portland, filed a lawsuit for over $51 billion against major fossilfuel entities–one of the largest claims for a climate case to date. and nearly 100 globally that seek compensation from fossilfuel companies for disinformation and/or climate impacts.
cases challenging fossilfuel companies for decades of climate disinformation remain stalled, tied up by the defendants in procedural wrangling that prevents them from being heard on their merits, delaying justice for affected communities. Over 140 such cases have been filed globally since 2016, with 47 new filings in 2023 alone.
Finance is the top priority for this COP and is the linchpin to help lower income nations transition from fossilfuels to clean energy, close the energy poverty gap, adapt to climate impacts, and address mounting loss and damage. Those investments will deliver huge climate and public health benefits from reduced fossilfuel pollution. Meanwhile,
Even now, with fall in the air, we are reminded of the harsh reality that fossil-fueled climate change is causing fall to be warmer across the contiguous US, particularly in the southwest. Shorter-than-needed acclimatization periods.
While these nominations are dangerous, whats even more disturbing is the opening they create for fossilfuel corporations that have masterminded climate deception campaigns to regain social license. Major fossilfuel corporations lit the fuse decades ago Climate change denial is no accident.
corporations and institutional investors owe a fiduciary duty to maximize profits through economic activities that continue to produce, sell, and use fossilfuels (i.e. 33] However, this view directly contributes to the climate crisis because the use of fossilfuels is ubiquitous in the economy. 23, 2025, [link].
42-43) Later in the hearing, Senator Ed Markey asked Mr. Zeldin to confirm comments made in 2016 by then-Congressman Zeldin that the U.S. must reduce its reliance on fossilfuels and pursue clean, green energy. Zeldin affirmed that we must, with urgency, be addressing these [climate] issues. (Tr.
For years, IRIS assessments have helped shield EPA regulations from the chemical and fossilfuel industries efforts to strip our nation of environmental protections. In 2016, IRIS published a risk assessment linking ethylene oxide exposure to cancer, concluding that this toxic chemical is much more dangerous than previously thought.
Trump didnt expect to win in 2016. The pick to head DOE made his fortune in fracking, not a good sign, and the pick to head Interior is a fossilfuel enthusiast but not a climate denier. But there are a few additions to the cast and some new construction on the set. I talked about areas of continuity in my last post.

Well, the short version is that we are in a warmer world primarily from the burning of fossilfuels. With fossilfuel-driven climate change , the atmosphere is warmer, so our atmospheric “sponge” is much bigger. From 1958-2016, every region in the contiguous US observed an increase in the heaviest precipitation events.
On July 1, PA Interfaith Power & Light is launching a new Faith and FossilFuels Initiative to prepare a report and story map documenting how to build a faithful ethic of stewardship for the earth in response to the impacts of polluting industry in Pennsylvania. Fossilfuels are the largest driver of the climate crisis.
This was even less than the struggling sink removed during the 2015-2016 El Niño, making it the weakest land carbon sink in over a decade. But this weakening would explain most of the record jump in the concentration of CO₂ in 2024, which was too large to be explained by fossilfuel emissions alone.
For example, in November 2016, the Obama administrations Bureau of Land Management (BLM) promulgated a regulation to reduce waste of natural gas from venting, flaring, and leaks during oil and natural gas production activities on public and Tribal lands. This assertion of presidential power is all but certain to be contested.
A timeline of events 2008 Presidential Election: Musk supports Barack Obama 2012 Presidential Election: Musk supports Barack Obama 2014 – Musk described himself politically as half Democrat and half Republican 2016 Musk voiced support for Universal Basic Income (UBI) and Direct Democracy as a response to the threat of Artificial Intelligence (..)
Climate change nearly doubled burned area in forests of the western US between 1984-2016, and more than a third of burned area has been traced to emissions from the largest fossilfuel producers and cement manufacturers. Climate change is primarily caused by burning fossilfuels.
A new dataset released by InfluenceMap provides information on heat-trapping emissions traced to the 122 largest investor and state-owned fossilfuel companies in the world. Fossilfuels are the main driver of climate change and the terrifying effects of it that we see happening across the world.
Last week, I participated in the Scientists Speakout Day during the Summer of Heat on Wall Street , to protest and disrupt the financial institutions that are enabling the fossilfuel industry (and, as a result, our current climate crisis).
As of 2016, half of its total emissions are from the power sector, with 20% from industry and 15% from transportation, and. According to the Energy Information Agency , South Korea’s power sector is heavily reliant on fossilfuels. Actual generation is tilted a bit more toward fossilfuels and nuclear.
Two-thirds of the G20’s public finance for energy went to fossilfuels in 2019–2020. The G20 group of nations provided nearly US$200 billion in support of fossilfuels in 2021, despite the worsening impacts of the climate crisis and their pledge in 2009 to phase out “inefficient” subsidies. By Catherine Early.
If honored, this commitment will likely unseat Canada as the worst-ranking in the G20 for international public financing to the fossilfuel sector. . This means while EDC’s overall fossilfuel support was CAD 13.6 Shifting public finance for energy out of all fossilfuels and into clean energy is an urgent task.
In 2016 Monterey County voters passed Measure Z, a citizen initiative intended to bar the drilling of new oil and gas wells in the county and ban the use of fracking technology for existing wells in Monterey County. Later this month the justices will hear arguments in Chevron U.S.A.
While the epicenter of the war and its horrors has remained trained on and in Ukraine, Russia has also leveraged its position as a major fossilfuel exporter to fund its war efforts and to manipulate and threaten others, including countries across Europe that have long relied on Russian supplies of gas. It’s worth noting that the shareholder proposal requesting the nomination of a climate expert to ExxonMobil’s board received just over 20 percent support in 2016. Avery was a respected climate scientist—although she had also sparked controversy with her decisions at WHOI to accept major funding from oil and gas corporations.
In addition, environmental justice advocates and frontline communities routinely point to the danger of concentrated carbon dioxide , embedded siting inequities , and the use of CCS to distract from the real work of phasing out fossilfuels.) Who needs units anyway? Why do Exxon’s greenwashed graphs matter?
Under the LCFS each fuel pathway gets a unique carbon intensity (CI) based on a lifecycle analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and use of the fuel. This approach holds fuel producers accountable for reducing fossilfuel use and other global warming pollution in their supply chains.
The radiative forcing from these changes in concentrations can be easily calculated using standard formulas (from Etminan et al, 2016 which supersede the slightly simpler ones from IPCC TAR), as about 2 W/m 2 for the CO 2 change and 0.65 W/m 2 for CH 4. W/m2 (to about 60% of the CO 2 effect since 1750).
Caption: The Salar de Atacama salt works in Chile in 2016. Amid a growing global appetite for electrical power as an alternative to planet-warming fossilfuels, the value of this natural endowment is soaring. . A battle is brewing over the future of lithium, an essential component of the world’s transition to renewable energy.
A 2022 Rainforest Action Network repor t found that “fossilfuel financing from the world’s 60 largest banks has reached USD $4.6 trillion in the six years since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, with $742 billion in fossilfuel financing in 2021 alone.” The biggest US bank investors in fossilfuels? “At
This was shown by Halldór Björnsson of the Icelandic weather service and presented at the Arctic Circle conference 2016. I discussed this here in 2016 and also in my 2018 RealClimate article “ If you doubt that the AMOC has weakened, read this ”, together with possible other alternative explanations of the ‘cold blob’.
For decades the fossilfuel lobby has masterfully weakened, derailed, and outright blocked government climate policy. The fossilfuel lobby meddles with Canadian politics and inserts itself into international climate change politics and diplomacy. The biggest barrier to climate action in Canada is the oil and gas lobby.
There are many possible emergency actions. These are legitimate concerns that cannot simply be pushed aside. But, in an emergency, we need to change our approach, find compromise, consider risk differently, and move much more rapidly.
Central to these questions is the role of fossilfuels, which have long been seen as the backbone of economic growth, but now threaten to interfere with international climate goals. In a July 2016 report , the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs described climate change as the “single biggest threat to development.”
The sources of these increases are dominated by the burning of fossilfuels, landfills, mining, oil and gas operations, agriculture (especially livestock for methane), and industry. New greenhouse gas compounds such as halocarbons (CFCs, HFCs) did not exist in the pre-industrial atmosphere. ln(CO 2 /CO 2 _orig) (seen in Table 6.2
There’s a direct line of culpability between fossilfuel corporations and climate change – it’s why so many oil and gas CEOs have topped our list of Climate Villains. But they aren’t the only powerful players who shoulder responsibility for keeping us hooked on fossilfuels, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Canada promised to cut its greenhouse gas emissions after the 2016 Paris Agreement. The issue is that our banks, pension funds and insurance companies take our hard-earned money and heavily invest in fossilfuels. However, we have heard that the government wants to label fossilfuels as green under this new system.
million from fossilfuel interests, climate science deniers, and highly polluting industries. Until April 2024, Farmer held shares in the fossilfuel giants Shell and BP, each worth more than £100,000. From the 2019 general election to the start of the 2024 election campaign, the Tories had accepted at least £8.4
However, it’s a disappointment to the initiative’s proponents and to a larger group of environmental advocates who seek to promote California’s quick transition from reliance on heavily-polluting and climate-damaging fossilfuels to renewable energy resources.
