The fossilfuel industry has long been the main driver of climate change, but Big Oil’s CEOs and profiteers would like you to believe that it is a part of the solution. One of the people peddling this idea is the man behind Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) – Murray Edwards, the FossilFuel Fanatic.
In a new study released today, UCS attributes substantial temperature and sea level rise to emissions traced to the largest fossilfuel producers and cement manufacturers. Every delay in phasing out fossilfuels will burden future generations who need to adapt to rising seas and recover from loss and damage due to sea level impacts.
The Russian attack on Ukraine has led to a spike in energy prices, with oil briefly surpassing $100 a barrel , the highest level since 2014, and Dutch and British gas prices rising 40 to 60 percent Thursday. As the war intensifies and sanctions loom, analysts fear disruptions to the supply of fossilfuels. Read more on E360 ?.
Fossilfuel power plant owners are facing increased accountability for their air and water pollution, including from a new round of environmental and public health protections that are being rolled out by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We’ve heard these lazily disingenuous narratives before.
Utilities and grid operators prepared for the storm as it was coming down the pike, but they still underestimated the energy demand it would trigger, as well as the number of outages at fossilfuel power plants—mainly natural gas-fired, plus some coal-fired plants.
The same scenario has played out with the power plants that use fossilfuels, predominantly methane (“natural”) gas, delivered by pipelines. This system worked so well in the past that gas plants totally dominated new power plant investment from 1990 through 2014. It’s a vicious feedback loop.
Gas plants failed at a scale that jeopardized grid reliability for large regions of the United States during severe winter storms in 2011 , 2014 , 2018 , 2021 , and 2022. Even with the clean energy transition well underway, gas plants will be around for a while as we phase out fossilfuels.
That 2013 headline resulted from the first effort to quantify emissions from the ‘carbon majors’ —fossilfuel companies and cement manufacturers whose businesses have contributed an outsized amount of heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere. Nearly two-thirds of industrial heat-trapping emissions can be traced to just 90 entities.
Union of Concerned Scientists’ (UCS) research shows that top fossilfuel producers’ emissions are responsible for as much as half of global surface temperature increase. Data on the major carbon producers’ emissions have been published since 2014. The best solution: Replace fossilfuels with renewable energy.
Recent research shows that 97% of tailings spills between 2014-2023 went uninspected, despite AER claims of routine inspections. The regulator can only be effective if it is independent from the industries it oversees. The AER has consistently failed to fulfill its mandate to ensure safe, environmentally responsible energy development.
Questioning fossilfuel companies is part of our mission, but each year the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) gets a chance to aim some choice words directly at corporate leaders during their annual shareholders’ meetings. million last year to pump out disinformation about California’s energy policies.
The report also found that contrary to the AERs assertion that there has been no environmental impact from tailings spills between 2014 and 2023, 50 per cent of reported spills with images show visible environmental degradation. Dakota Norris, Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment dakota@cape.ca
However, as we replace fossilfuels with clean electricity for heating and transportation to meet our climate goals, these peak demands will increasingly shift to the winter in many parts of the country. Decarbonizing the power sector also plays a critical long-term role by replacing fossilfuels in other sectors.
During the 2014 Polar Vortex (shown below), gas plants accounted for 40% of the generating capacity within the storm-impacted area, but 55% of the generating capacity that failed during the storm. During the 2014 Polar Vortex, gas plants accounted for a disproportionately large percentage of power plant failures.
The fossilfuel industry has systematically contaminated our environment with a wide range of toxic chemicals for over a century. Nitrogen and sulfur oxides harm lungs and produce acid rain NOx forms when fossilfuels are burned at high temperatures, as a result of a reaction with the nitrogen in air.
As a result, in 2014, the Canadian company Enbridge moved that a new, larger Line 3 be built, a proposition that immediately disregarded indigenous land rights and Anishinaabe culture. One of the lines, Line 3, has “extensive corrosion” and would require 7,000 digs to repair, according to its replacement project director.
That’s a really good thing given the central role we expect and need solar to play in a just transition away from fossilfuels. This graph depicts actual growth in solar installations since 2014 and projections for further growth in the next five years. (GW With solar, there are no smokestacks, no fuel extraction.
CCS does nothing about methane leakage or the emissions that result from burning fossilfuels; therefore ignoring 90 per cent of the problem. Carbon capture prolongs our dependence on oil and gas at a time when preventing catastrophic climate change requires winding down fossilfuel production and use.
When all is said and done, lower resource adequacy requirements could theoretically reduce utilities’ reliance on fossilfuels and reduce the cost of resource adequacy requirements for ratepayers. Lower resource adequacy requirements could accelerate the retirement of fossilfuel plants.
The other was Kendall Dilling, CEO of the Pathways Alliance, a new group made up of oil sands producers like Cenovus, with the intention to push carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to perpetuate fossilfuel production. The fossilfuel sector directly accounts for less than 1 per cent of all jobs in Canada.
For decades the fossilfuel lobby has masterfully weakened, derailed, and outright blocked government climate policy. The fossilfuel lobby meddles with Canadian politics and inserts itself into international climate change politics and diplomacy. The biggest barrier to climate action in Canada is the oil and gas lobby.
There’s a direct line of culpability between fossilfuel corporations and climate change – it’s why so many oil and gas CEOs have topped our list of Climate Villains. But they aren’t the only powerful players who shoulder responsibility for keeping us hooked on fossilfuels, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
In August, the oil and gas industry had 64 lobby meetings with the federal government, with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) being the most active fossilfuel lobbyist once again. CAPP is the largest oil and gas industry association and lobby group in Canada. The influence doesn’t stop there. Will you join us?
This is a pretty clear illustration of how sea level starts to rise slowly; but in the long run, sea-level rise caused by fossil-fuel burning and deforestation in our generation could literally go off the chart and inundate many coastal cities and wipe entire island nations off the map. But first things first.
But despite this, it did not shift the dominance of fossilfuels. ” The surge in renewables does not mean a reduction in emissions While this shows that investments in renewables are increasing, it is still evident that reducing reliance on fossilfuels is a huge challenge. to its highest level since 2014.
The Carbon Capture Facility at the Boundary Dam Power Plant in Saskatchewan went into service in 2014. Real solutions, not dangerous distractions, are needed Fossilfuels are causing the climate crisis. Saskatchewan’s Boundary Dam project, operating for a decade now, has only achieved a maximum of 57 per cent efficiency.
For wind, that would be two and a half times as much electricity as it produced in the United States in 2014, and would increase its generation to 11 percent of the US supply. For solar, the decade will have brought it from well below one percent of US electricity supply in 2014 to 7.5 percent in 2024 (again, with rooftop solar).
Renters are more likely to be denied FEMA assistance than homeowners: according to FEMA’s own analysis of its almost five million aid applications from 2014-2018, poor renters were 23% less likely to receive assistance than wealthier homeowner applicants.
Suncor is also a founding member of the Pathways Alliance , a fossilfuel industry association made up of six major tar sands producers and the newest major lobby group. It wasn’t until 2007 that Exxon publicly acknowledged that climate change was occurring and largely driven by the burning of fossilfuels.
Ebel, the CEO of Enbridge, to our list of infamous Climate Villains – powerful people with fossilfuel interests holding Canada back from effective climate action. The executives behind the fossilfuel industry often avoid public scrutiny, which is why we’re shining the spotlight on their activities.
With more than 300,000 panels deployed over an area of 214 hectares, it is the largest of its kind in the country, with a production capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) – a sizeable output, but not enough on its own to turn Bolivia’s energy mix away from fossilfuels and towards renewables. Advantageous and encouraging.
These prohibitions are part of cities’ broader effort to participate in the transition away from fossilfuels. In 2014, SB 1456 became law in Oklahoma, allowing utilities to charge higher rates to consumers generating electricity through small-scale solar panels or wind turbines.
On October 18, the FracTracker Alliance announced the winners of the 2023 Community Sentinel Awards to honor the leadership of individuals working to protect communities from the harms of the fossilfuel industry. The other winners are Maury Johnson, Greenville, West Virginia and Debra Ramirez, Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Between 2000-2014 alone, there have been over 1,276 spills across the entire Enbridge pipeline system that have dumped over 35 million liters of oil into the environment. All of this is happening at a time when we should be prioritizing a just transition to renewable energy rather than burning more fossilfuels.
Elmore (2014) Coca-Cola: The Alternative Report by War on Want (2006) The Coke Machine by Michael Blanding (2010). USA: Coke, EPA to reach settlement in Clean Air Act ammonia violation charges Shane O'Halloran | Food Engineering Mag | March 19, 2014 EPA alleged 27 violations at a Minute Maid juice processing facility in Michigan.
Throughout his career, Minott and the Clean Air Council earned a reputation for holding government agencies and fossilfuel companies accountable. Church was an elementary school counselor in Philadelphia until 2014. He was concerned about the worldwide consumption of fossilfuels and its impact on climate change.
Imperial Oil Ltd: 2019-Present Exxon Mobil Corp: 1983-2009 & 2014-2019 Esso Petroleum Co Ltd: 2009-2014 Villain Career Profile Corson has spent his entire career extracting and marketing oil and gas, working mostly for Imperial Oil and its parent company ExxonMobil. Leaks and Spills 2022 / 2023 (ongoing) — Kearl Lake, AB 5.3
Natural gas had the same problems during a cold weather event in 2014 and the polar vortex in 2018. Read more here ] -- Renewable Energy Generation Isn’t Coming Online Fast Enough: A study PJM released February 24 showed renewable energy generation sources were not coming online fast enough to replace fossilfuel plants that are retiring.
This debate is not new and there was a similar public discussion about long-term memory in the climate system and trends in 2014 on a Dutch website, Climate Dialogue. On the other hand, we expect to see the effect of greenhouse gases when we look at the temperature averaged over the entire globe.
In the early days of the current price shocks, fossilfuel boosters blamed clean energy and climate policy. In fact, it is abundantly clear that this is a fossilfuel energy crisis and, primarily, a natural gas crisis that is mainly affecting Europe. The Capacity Story.
On the other hand, only 10% of the audiovisual materials showed “extreme environmental changes” linked to some form of pollution, while 12% linked it to the use of fossilfuels. CBS notably addressed climate change through “Madam Secretary” (2014-2019), linking global concerns with international diplomacy, per creator Barbara Hall.
That fund started its coal divestment in 2014, also due to Urgewald’s campaigns, and tightened its guidelines in 2019. and protecting the planet’s diversity, the expansion of the fossilfuel industry must cease. Further financing of fossil companies, and above all the coal industry, is the first step towards this.
