With the arrival of everyone’s favorite invasive plant hopper — the spotted lanternfly — the Academy reached out to Drexel’s Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science (BEES) alumna, Emma McKee, to learn more about how to catch these insects using more specialized, effective traps that minimize harm to wildlife. .

Beautiful to behold with elegantly patterened grey, red and black spotted wings, they are native to China, Vietnam and Bangladesh and were first discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014 in Berks County. Since then, the species has spread to 34 Pennsylvania counties and this summer rampaged through through New Jersey on their way to New York.

This coordinated approach to flood risk management followed the American Society of Civil Engineer’s call for a National Flood Risk Management Strategy (2014), which in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and other catastrophic storms, urged all levels of government in the United States to develop and align sustainable flood risk management strategies.

Recipient Amy Carpenter will attend Susquehanna University to study Earth and Environmental Science. The Vanessa Van Gorder Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015 in honor of Vanessa, who passed away on December 26, 2014. She is passionate about conservation and the environment and intends to study environmental science.
