The worlds largest fossil fuel and cement producers have known for decades that their products cause climatechange, yet they spread disinformation to misinform the public and have profited as people around the world have suffered from ever-worsening climate impacts.
I followed with great interest the launch of the sixth assessment report Working Group 1 (The Physical Science Basis) from the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC) on August 9th. The cause of our changingclimate is the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations that we have released into the air.

written two decades later: … in 1994 we published an article in the journal Nature showing that the actual global temperature trend was “one-quarter of the magnitude of climate model results.”McNider The version of the MSU2R product at the beginning of 2014 was version 5.5, McNider, "Satellite greenhouse signal", Nature , vol.
A new paper by Ben Santer and colleagues has appeared in PNAS where they extend their previous work on the detection and attribution of anthropogenic climatechange to include the upper stratosphere, using observations from the Stratospheric Sounding Units (SSUs) (and their successors, the AMSU instruments) that have flown since 1979.
Photo by Mathias Reding on Unsplash Climatechange litigation has finally reached the world’s highest court. On March 29, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution requesting an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of States with respect to climatechange.
A friend asked me if a discussion paper published on Statistics Norway’s website, ‘ To what extent are temperature levels changing due to greenhouse gas emissions? ’, was purposely timed for the next climate summit ( COP28 ). I don’t know the answer to his question. But this discussion paper is problematic for sure.
Cox has said of climatechange: “I don’t know how much of it is caused by humans. He isn’t an outright climate skeptic, though he is unconvinced that climatechange has anything to do with California’s current wildfires. ” Not good news for California’s climate programs.
term, even for the very low greenhouse gas emissions scenario.” As of today, the “extent and magnitude of climatechange impacts are larger than estimated in previous assessments.” C in the near?term, Using carbon capture, we may be able come back to that level even if we temporarily exceed it.
The consequences of climatechange aren’t reserved for the oceans and atmosphere: Diseases have secured a larger presence in recent years thanks to global warming. We never imagined the magnitude of diseases impacted by climatechange. Climate’s Contagion. A Conservative Crystal Ball.
A decade ago, Australia had a climate tax. That was repealed in 2014, and the ensuing period saw little progress. Climate had played a significant role in the election, and Labor was committed to to climate action. On a per capita basis, Australia’s carbon emissions are even higher than the United States.
There has been a lot of commentary about perceived disagreements among climate scientists about whether climatechange is, or will soon, accelerate. These simulations used historical GHG concentrations and aerosol emissions to 2014, and a mid-range scenario (SSP2-4.5) The screening uses the likely range of 1.8 Russell, J.
After the EPA proposed the Clean Power Plan in 2014, for example, fossil fuel interests and their backers tried to argue that the proposal’s 2030 emission-reduction targets were completely unrealistic, and that the country would see astronomically high costs and blackouts due to the rule.
John Cochrane has posted an important blog post about adapting to climatechange. I have working on the costs of climatechange for 15 years now going back to my 2005 Death Toll paper. I am a microeconomist and I said to Marty; "Many of us know that we do not know what risks climatechange will pose.
Since 2014, Greece has doubled its renewable energy output with a series of new solar and wind projects, and they have shut down most of their coal-fired plants. ” He pointed out, however, that the revised plan did not deal with the problem of how to adapt to the climatechange that is already happening.
Note: On September 26, 2019, the Vanuatu Permanent Mission to the United Nations hosted a workshop on seeking an advisory opinion on climatechange from the International Court of Justice. By Michael B. Professor Michael Gerrard gave a presentation about the legal and procedural issues that would be involved.
Extremes : Back in 2012, the literature assessed by AR5 connecting changes in extremes to climatechange was scant. There may also be a contribution from forcing inadequacies and, in some models, an overestimate of the response to increasing greenhouse gas and other anthropogenic forcing (dominated by the effects of aerosols).
Colombia accounts for 0.4 % of the global greenhouse gas emissions (“GHG”). In this blog post, we will briefly explain (i) the background of climatechange laws in Colombia, (ii) the nature and reach of the ‘ Acción de Cumplimiento ,’ and (iii) the two judgments and their implications for climate action in Colombia.
SG would cool the Earth, temporarily and imperfectly offsetting some of the climate effects of elevated greenhouse gases, by reflecting a bit (around 0.5% Climate-change risks are severe and growing, even if uncertain in their precise character, timing, and incidence. to 1%) of incoming sunlight.
On March 9, 2023, the Japanese Supreme Court refused to hear the first climatechange litigation brought before it without specifying substantive reasons. The Plaintiffs in the Kobe Civil Case claimed a violation of personal rights to life, bodily integrity and health on account of climatechange. Kobelco Power Kobe No.
Climatechange touches many aspects of our lives, including the food on our plates. Many of our foods are vulnerable as climate impacts worsen, from staple crops like maize to much-loved treats like coffee and chocolate. Climatechange is making the ocean warmer, more acidic and lower in oxygen.
Of all the troubling headlines emerging from the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC) WG1 report, one warning will surely dominate headlines in the next days and weeks: Earth is likely to reach the crucial 1.5? Guest commentary by Malte Meinshausen, Zebedee Nicholls, and Piers Forster.

Introduction As climatechange accelerates, environmental disasters will leave millions homeless. Historical Background of ClimateChange The scientific consensus on climatechange is undeniable.
The United States and China, the world’s two leading greenhouse gas emitters, are each responsible for more than $1.8 trillion of global income losses from 1990 to 2014, according to a new study that links the emissions in individual countries to the economic impacts of climatechange … Continue reading U.S.
For Canada’s major oil and gas producers, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a get-out-of-jail-free card, which allows them to keep on polluting while appearing as though they are taking the threat of climatechange seriously. The Carbon Capture Facility at the Boundary Dam Power Plant in Saskatchewan went into service in 2014.
The AMOC has repeatedly shown major instabilities in recent Earth history , for example during the Last Ice Age, prompting concerns about its stability under future global warming, see e.g. Broecker 1987 who warned about “unpleasant surprises in the greenhouse”. For more on this see my Review Paper in Nature. Here a quote from Liu et al.
During the past 30 years of extensive political debate around global climatechange, participants have largely ignored the role that curbing population growth could play in dealing with it. 3 from IPCC, Fifth Assessment Report, Mitigation Report, Summary for Policymakers (2014). Figure SPM.3
The expansions to the cooling requirements will help keep our most vulnerable residents safe as we continue to see the impacts of climatechange.”. We work together to produce news and information about the impact of climatechange, pollution, and aging infrastructure on the Great Lakes and drinking water. Other News.
T oday, the Sabin Center for ClimateChange Law is releasing a set of model protocols for assessing the impacts of climatechange on the built environment under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and state equivalents. 24, 2014). Last year, the U.S. 77,802, 77,828 (Dec.
There’s a direct line of culpability between fossil fuel corporations and climatechange – it’s why so many oil and gas CEOs have topped our list of Climate Villains. But they aren’t the only powerful players who shoulder responsibility for keeping us hooked on fossil fuels, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
ClimateChange Is Intensifying the Water Cycle, New IPCC Report Finds – The climate crisis will jeopardize key sources of fresh water and make extreme weather events more severe. The Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange, a group of the world’s leading climate scientists, released its sixth climate assessment on Monday.
But this simplified pathway misses a key step in cloud formation–and one that could help us combat climatechange. Without these changes to clouds, the Earth would already be warmer. C above pre-industrial levels by 2100 to avoid the most severe impacts of climatechange. C temperature target. C temperature target.
Many argue that this is one of the most intrusive things we can do to combat climatechange. Getting ready to plant a ponderosa pine seedling in a post-burn landscape As human-caused climatechange continues to warm the planet, plants and animals may no longer be suited to the climate conditions where they currently grow.
The fossil fuel lobby meddles with Canadian politics and inserts itself into international climatechange politics and diplomacy. 636 fossil fuel lobbyists were part of official country delegations to the last United Nations climate negotiations ( UN Framework Convention on ClimateChange, and Conference of Parties 27, or COP27 ).
One is Alex Pourbaix is the CEO of Cenovus, one of the biggest oil sands producers, who is regularly in the media talking about energy and climatechange politics. Fossil fuels are the main cause of the climate crisis, and the biggest threats to a stable climate is the continued production and consumption of them.
In a previous blog post , I briefly reviewed some of the innovative strategies to reduce methane emissions from agricultural livestock and rice operations, which have the potential to combat a significant source of global greenhouse gas emissions. This appears to be the only national level agricultural methane target currently in law.
Under the Paris Agreement, countries will need to track greenhouse gas emissions at the level of individual ‘super emitters’, such as power plants, in close-to-real time. The impacts of climatechange are downright frightening. Rich Kruger is the CEO of Suncor, a company responsible for nearly 35 million metric tons of climate pollution annually – the equivalent of 8.3 Their climate report does not include a 1.5-degree Their climate report does not include a 1.5-degree
State program leaders point out that the DDRDP and AMMP programs have provided some of the most cost-effective GHG emissions reductions of the entire Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund portfolio.
Yet climatechange and human environmental impacts threaten our long-term food security. This variation on the iconic US advertising slogan from the beef industry may sound funny, but it’s no joke that the current agriculture system is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution.
Since 2007, only 2009, 2013 and 2014 had more ice at the end of the melt season. Unless and until we get a handle on climatechange, these trends are likely to continue. As a result, this year’s sea ice minimum left the Arctic Ocean with a higher-than-usual amount of ice coverage when compared to the last fifteen years.
When I was growing up, climatechange wouldn’t have qualified as a typical topic of conversation around the dinner table, let alone soil health or the ability of soils to store carbon. billion USD to support the USDA’s efforts to mitigate climatechange via agricultural soils. Not so in the modern day, however.
used the words “ climatechange ” expressly. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC), the global average temperature has already risen by 1.1°C To avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis, the IPCC recommends limiting the temperature rise to 1.5°C,
