The process introduces salts into the waste stream, which are detrimental for downstream waters. Their work has revealed to them one of the darker sides of rural life in Nebraska.

On February 13, Marcellus Drilling News reported the Canadian firm Rain City Resources from Vancouver, BC and Kendra II , a waste disposal company in Springville, Susquehanna County, signed an agreement to establish a pilot plant to extract lithium from Marcellus Shale wastewater in Susquehanna County.
